I reflect back on my last four years as Chair of Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC) with tremendous pride.
I was fortunate to accept the position at a very exciting time in JABC’s history. In 2006 we received a two million dollar grant from the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue and Ministry of Education to expand and introduce business and entrepreneurship programs into school districts across British Columbia. Until this point, JABC had been limited to delivering programs primarily in larger centres such as the Lower Mainland, Kelowna, Victoria and Prince George.
In 2007 we implemented the Plan for Governement Supported Program Expansion and by 2009 most end-targets had been met two years ahead of schedule. Many of those targets were exceeded. Highlights included marketing our programs to every school district in BC, increasing the number of school districts by 60%, from 30 to 49, increasing our reach to at-risk and Aboriginal youth, building relationships with educators and new delivery partners, and exploring alternative delivery models to make our programs more accessible.
While all of these accomplishments are exceptional, as a volunteer the real success is witnessing the reaction of the students. Each year I am overwhelmed by the enthusiasm, energy and outright professional capability of JA participants at our year-end Celebrate JA awards ceremony. As “Achievers” leave with new skills and confidence I am optimistic for our future. I am also impressed with the commitment of countless donors, volunteers and educators who have made this possible and to whom I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks for their support.

AWork readiness entrepreneurship Financial literacy
Thank you for the vital role each of you played in our success during the 2009-10 program year. The contributions of hundreds of teachers, volunteers and donors came together to provide engaging experiences to young people who will ultimately influence the workforce and economic development of the province and country.
Like all businesses in the past year, Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC) has been challenged by a rapidly changing environment. Despite a number of obstacles, we were able to achieve our goals and maintain our standing among the leading JA charters across the country. On the budget side, thanks to an increase in revenue from our Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame Gala and a decrease in a number of expenses, we were able to produce a significant operating surplus which will be re-invested back into the organization.
This year will be most remembered for our program planning process led by our Board of Directors. Recognizing changing trends in the marketplace and in the educational environment, JABC undertook a review and renewal of our program delivery plan. The plan is built around a number of possibility statements that articulate a vision of where we want to be in five years. Three key issues have emerged from the possibility statements – sustainability, innovation and impact. This coming year will see an investment with focus on providing resources and tools for volunteers, increased technology integrated into our programs and outreach to diverse student audiences such as Aboriginal, at-risk and students in rural communities.
I close the year with pride in all of our accomplishments and confidence that we have a strong plan to take us into the future. Thank you to those who made it possible for us to perform at such high levels again this year.

The BC Business Challenge is a fast-paced competition where grade 11 and 12 students take on the role of high-tech executives in a global business simulation. Teams work against the clock to develop management strategies for their imaginary companies, analyzing financial reports and scrutinizing the actions of other companies in a futuristic marketplace.
This year, Junior Achievement of British Columbia presented the new Dr. Donald Rix “Inspiring Business Excellence” Scholarship to Brooklyn Bauer, a JA Company Program student from Kamloops. Thanks to an endowment established by the Rix Family Foundation, the $2000 scholarship will be presented annually to an Aboriginal, immigrant or rural student who has demonstrated significant growth in business excellence skills.
J2009-2010 Program Highlights
Four high school students from BC attended JA’s International Youth Conference in Kingston Ontario, which attracts hundreds of students from around the globe. During their intense week of learning, participants were put through a grueling agenda that included numerous high level workshops and activities in order to complete an assigned business project.
Junior Achievement of British Columbia celebrated the Olympics along with the rest of the world this past winter. Throughout the games staff, volunteers and student ambassadors took every opportunity to promote JA to our international and local guests.

AJ2009-2010 Program Highlights
Junior Achievement of British Columbia partnered with BC Hydro this year to encourage Company
Program students to think “Green” when developing their business ideas. The initiative resulted in more
awareness about the environment and got participants thinking outside the box.
In June, Colliers International hosted their annual Charity Golf Tournament with proceeds directed to Junior
Achievement on Vancouver Island. The event raised $40,000 and will fund JA Titan programs for three years in
Greater Victoria beginning 2010/11 as well as sending Achievers from Victoria to the annual BC Business
Challenge in Vancouver and JA’s International Youth Conference in Toronto.
The after-school Company Program – A Student Venture continued to grow in popularity this past
year among grade 11 and 12 students. A number of student teams sold their products at public markets
and malls including Granville Island.
