Issue No. 15 22 October 2015
Principal’s Report
Student Leadership
It has been a settled and busy start to the Term; students have come back to school refreshed and ready for
learning. I have had the pleasure of reading 51 student nominations for Student Leadership in 2016. It is pleasing
that 51 students from a possible 115 Grade 9 students are aspiring to become a Student Leader. Each student will
have the opportunity to present a five minute speech to interested staff and students. This has started to occur in
the library during lunch hours, and will continue over the next couple of weeks. Staff and students will be voting
on Tuesday 10 November, with the announcement of the 2016 Student Leadership Team during a Whole School
Assembly on Tuesday 1 December.
Latrobe High School Master Plan
During the school holidays, the School Association and the DoE ratified our Master Plan for the ten million dollar
redevelopment. We are extremely pleased that nearly all of our wishes and priorities have been met. I have
attached the Master Plan for your perusal. With a tight timeframe to complete the schematic design and putting
the project out to tender, we have delayed the information evening where parents and the wider community will
have the opportunity to view more detailed plans and be briefed further by ARTAS Architects. I am hoping that
we will be able to give you a definitive date in the next newsletter.
Student Free Day – Moderation
Friday 23 October (tomorrow) is a Student Free day and required Professional Learning Day for teachers and
school staff across the state. We are working with all the other local high school in our area to moderate samples
of work and plan teaching strategies to move individual students forward in their learning. Students will no doubt
enjoy a long weekend!

High Expectations for Learning
As the year has progressed, a number of students have misplaced, lost or used the equipment they require for class.
Students cannot learn to their fullest and fulfil their assessment requirements without the correct equipment needed for
class. During homeroom this week, students have been reminded to restock their equipment and I reinforced this
message at a short assembly this morning. If students do not have the required gear for class, starting on Monday, they
will be asked to spend their lunch hour supervised in the library. If you require any assistance in making sure your son/
daughter has the following equipment, please contact your Grade Coordinator:
pencil case blue and red pens
ruler colouring-in pencils
calculator grey –lead pencil and eraser.
Thank you for supporting your son’s/daughter’s learning.
Grade 6 Transition Morning and Grade 10 Don Information Evening
Yesterday morning we welcomed our 2016 Grade 7 students to a transition morning. It was the first time we have had
the majority of Grade 6’s together. Parents would have been very proud of their willingness to participate in all the
learning activities and socialise with students from other primary schools. Miss Angela Sheahen (Transition Coordinator)
and our Personal Interest teachers have done a marvellous job in coordinating the morning. I would also like to thank
our feeder school Principals and Grade 6 teachers for assisting us with a smooth transition to high school.
I trust Grade 10 students and parents enjoyed the Don College Information Evening last night. I have been very
impressed with the support and guidance Don College staff have given our students throughout the transition process.
On Monday 16 November and Thursday 19 November, Don College staff will be visiting LHS to conduct enrolments with
students, by asking students to choose their subjects. If you would like any more information about the enrolment
procedure or you would like to be there during the enrolment interview, please contact Mr Karafilis (Grade 10
Coordinator) to book in a time.

GRADE 7 REPORT
Grade 7 students have had a good start to this term. We cannot believe Term Four is here already. This
term will be very busy with carnivals and extracurricular opportunities for students. During the term, stu-
dents have the opportunity to improve on their current assessment. We strongly encourage students to
set learning goals for the remainder of the year as this will give them focus in the last term of Grade 7.
Congratulations to the Stars of Grade 7 listed below:
7A Sarsha Flack
Sarsha has made a wonderful start to the term. She is organised, working hard and achieving pleasing
results in Basics.
7B Molly Carter
Molly is a positive student who always works to the best of her ability. She is a great team member and
readily assists others whenever possible.
7C Shanaye Barnes
Shanaye has been trying her best this term with all English activities and has voluntarily read our class
novel ‘Misery Guts’ aloud to her classmates.
7D Luke Shegog

BUSES We are currently concerned that some students catching a bus to school are disembarking the bus at bus stops in Gilbert St. This is in breach of our policy and we ask that all students remain on the bus until they are at the school bus stop. Students catching buses after school must also catch the bus at the school bus stops either in Last St or Percival St.
The manager of the Mersey Link buses has contacted the school and indicated they will not pick students up from alternative bus stops.

GRADE 8 POETRY
Last term, Grade 8 A completed a unit focusing on various types of poems: acrostic, haikus, limericks,
cinquains, sonnets etc. Below are some examples of the students’ poems.
Autumn Leaves
An art of nature
Under the trees they fall,
Telling of summer’s end.
Up I stand on my tiptoes, admiring the scenes above me.
Mountains of leaves lay on the ground.
Nagging at the trees comes the wind, north bound
Leaves fly all around
Evening begins as the sun starts to set
Alternating colours,
Vibrant colours,
Evening sun,
Shines down upon the autumn leaves of the trees.

Blue Hot Sky
Blue clouds, watery sky,
Yellow sunshine glowing through the day,
Turning hotter each minute of the summery day, going by.

A SONNET
How is it fair that you caused me so much pain,
You ruin my life and destroy my home.
Can you not see us outside in the rain?
They walk past and ignore my helpless moans
I scar and I bleed like everyone else
You can walk by us, like nothing is wrong
You think I’m disgusting, look at yourself
I tries very hard, I tried to be strong.
You sit with it all and I with nothing,
You sit in your fortress and watch us weep,
Please have a heart and promise me something
And this promise is one that you must keep.
Use your power to give us our homes back.
You have wealth, but it’s a heart that you lack.

GRADE 9 REPORT
Welcome back to the final term of 2015. The Grade
9 students have returned from their holidays
refreshed and ready to take on the final weeks of
the year.
Congratulations to the following students who have
received strength awards: Connor Reed-Delaney,
Kaleb Richards and Zac Enright.
Congratulations also go to the fifty students who
nominated themselves for the role of Student Lead-
er for 2016. Currently students are working on, and
presenting, their speeches leading up to voting
which will take place on Tuesday 10 November.
Good luck to all students involved in this process.
Student wearing of school uniform has been a lot
better over the past few months. Well done! Please
look out for a letter being sent home regarding the
Grade Ten hoodies for 2016. We would like to have
these ordered and ready to go at the beginning of
2016. There is a slip that needs to be returned to
the office, with payment, next month. The pur-
chase of the hoodies is optional.
If you have any questions regarding your child,
please email me or contact the school.

National Bandanna Day is CanTeen’s largest fundraiser and will be held on Friday 30 October. This year,
Latrobe High School’s Junior Leadership team is rallying support to assist young people living with
cancer. Every year, another 23,000 young people (63 a day) have to deal with the challenge of cancer.
That’s why we need everybody to get involved this National Bandanna Day. Bandannas play a significant
role as a symbol of hope and empowerment for people who are affected by cancer and are worn during
their cancer journey. Bandannas will be on sale at the front office for $4 each and every day up to
Friday 30 October. Please show your support by wearing your Canteen bandanna.
PE HOTSPOT
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
On Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 November, the Latrobe High Athletics Carnival will be run at the Latrobe Recreation Ground. A wide variety of track, field and novelty events will give all participants the opportunity to earn valuable house points for the AK Watts Shield. It will also give them the opportunity to be chosen to represent the school in the Interhigh Athletics Carnival held on December 8 in Penguin.
TOUCH FOOTBALL
The first games of touch football will be played at Meercroft Park today. Make sure you go along to sup-port our seven teams of boys and girls from all grades 7-10. Good luck and do us proud.
SUN SAFETY
It is getting to that time of the year again where the UV rays are at their harshest. Be sure to protect your-self and your family with the correct skin protection. Even on cloudy and overcast days, the UV rays can harm your skin.
The PE team will be providing sunscreen for all students for PE lessons.
REMEMBER
- SLIP on a t-shirt (long sleeve).
- SLOP on some sunscreen (SPF 50+).
- SLAP on a hat (wide brim).
- SEEK shade and
- SLIDE on some sunglasses.
STATE RUGBY UNION REPRESENTATIVES Last weekend, 3 students from Latrobe High represented Tasmania in the Tasmanian Rugby Union tour of Victoria in Under 14 and Under 16 teams.
Harley Hyde and Mike Kahura (both under 16) had mixed results in their games, defeating their oppo-nents in the first game 34-7 in a comfortable victory. They didn’t have the same luck in their second game going down 27-42. Mike Kahura, however, was a shining light in the loss scoring two tries for his team.
Leon Kahura in the Under 14 team had a tough weekend losing the game to their more fancied oppo-nents.
Congratulations to Harley, Mike and Leon on representing Tasmania and Latrobe High with such sports-manship and skill.
LEADERSHIP
Term four is a very exciting time for all of us as there is so much happening. The Grade Nine students who have
nominated for next year’s Leadership Team have begun presenting their lunchtime speeches. Although many of
them are feeling nervous about this it is a great opportunity to introduce themselves to students who don’t know
them. With 51 nominees it will take the best part of three weeks to get through all their speeches. At this stage we
plan to hold the elections on Tuesday 10 November.
Our second school social for the year is being held tonight. These are great events that allow students to build and
develop friendships outside normal school times. The theme this time is ‘Halloween’ and lots of students enjoy the
fun of dressing up in costumes for the night. It is also the last school social for our Grade Tens.
Yesterday we welcomed a large group of Grade Six students to LHS to take part in a transition program. It was great
to see them all here and we hope they had a good time. It is a really good way to help get over their concerns about
starting here next year. We hope they will have as wonderful a time at LHS over the next four years as we have had
over the last four years.
As Grade Ten students, we know this will be both an exciting term, and a sad term. We are looking forward to all
the special events coming up but also sad that we will be moving on at the end of the year. It is really important
that we make the most of these last two months and get involved in everything that is happening, so we can make
some great memories together.

Leadership Coordinator
Over the last few terms some of the leaders have been working closely with the grade seven classes to teach them
about bullying and find ways to stop it. So far we have talked about ‘what bullying is’, ‘what to do if you are a victim
of bullying’ and ‘what to do if you are a bystander/witness of bullying.’ One of the activities that we did was to run
an anti- bully poster competition.
We asked the Grade Sevens to create a colourful and eye catching poster that had to include the 4 steps. Be a
buddy, interrupt, speak up and tell someone. The winning posters will be displayed around the school.
Third prize goes to Inneka Enright and Connor Thorpe.
Second prize goes to Ashlee Woolley.
First prize goes to Maggie McHendrick.
Congratulations to all the winners, it was great to see so much participation and we had a very hard time choosing
the winners. The posters were colourful and eye catching as well as having some great messages.
