I know that many of you have already completed the parental survey that went home with students on Monday of this week. As I mentioned in the previous Headlines, this major survey is carried out on behalf of our governors every two years. It provides really useful information to help us understand what is going well and what more we need to do to improve the school to make sure it is a good as we can make it. It would be most helpful if you could complete this questionnaire over the coming weekend to be brought back on Monday morning. Thank you all in advance for your time with this – every response is valued and important.
On Tuesday evening the school was packed with Year 11 students from Sandringham and the local area visiting to learn more about life in the Sixth Form. All subjects were very popular and it looks as though we will have another wonderful Sixth Form next September. I would like to thank Ms Mouncey, Miss Wills, Mrs. Cavanagh and all the staff involved for delivering such an informative and interesting evening.
The main school dance show, ‘Velocity’ is the week after next. I believe there are still tickets available for some evenings, so contact the SandPit box office if you are interested in watching this amazing show.

Invigilator – part-time Starting April 2018
Pay Details: £8.50 per hour, term time only on a flexible, variable hours basis
We are looking to expand our Exam Invigilation team for the upcoming exam period. You will be required
to invigilate exams, collect and collate papers and work with the Exams Officer to ensure regulations are
adhered to. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals with an eye for detail and good
communication skills. The hours are varied over the year; there will be opportunities to work on an ad hoc basis during the year as well as during the main exam
period in May and June. There will be appropriate training for successful candidates and invigilators will
be required to attend regular refresher courses.

Music news Battle of the Bands - 7th February Battle of the Bands is fast approaching and we have
a fantastic range of bands signed up to take part! There are still spaces left, and all genres and styles are welcome so come down to the Music Faculty to sign up. Get your tickets from the SandPit Theatre.
Senior Recital Evening - 20th February Senior Recital Evening is an opportunity for our
musicians in Years 10-13 to perform in the SandPit Theatre and showcase a piece of their choice. This could be a piece from a recent examination or any other of their choice. Solos or small ensembles are welcome. Please sign up in the Music Faculty to take part or speak to one of the Music Faculty staff for more information
St Albans Young Musician of the Year We are recording entries for the St Albans Young
Musician of the Year competition on Monday 22nd January after school. If you would like to be entered, either sign up to be recorded or just send a recording to one of the Music Faculty staff with details of the piece and composer.
ABRSM exams Entries have now been made for ABRSM exams.
If you have been entered, an email will be sent to you confirming the date and time as soon as we receive them from ABRSM.
Rock School We currently have spaces in Rock School.
Students taking part in Rock School have weekly sessions and are led by an experienced musician and teacher through the process of setting up a band, rehearsing together, planning set lists and preparing for gigs. The cost is £65 for 11 sessions over the course of a term. If you are interested, application forms can be collected from the Music Faculty.

Dance News Velocity Don’t forget to buy your Velocity tickets.
Arrangements for the weekend technical rehearsals (27th/28th January) have been shared with all cast, both on google classroom and on the dance board. Not all students are required for the weekend technical rehearsals, and some students are only required for a specific time. Please make sure they check the time of their dance carefully to ensure they are at the theatre at the correct time. It is a very exciting time and I hope you are looking forward to the show.

Drama News
This week has been a busy one for Drama. Our fantastic Year 13 A-level students performed in their final practical assessment. They performed monologues and group pieces to an incredibly high standard and showcased some impressive talent. We are so proud of each and every one of them.
Our young actors company are busy preparing for their tour to local primary schools which commence next week. We can't wait for them to take their show on the road.
Next week our Year 13 and Year 11 students are both travelling into London to see productions that are an important part of their course. Year 11 are going to see the chilling 'Woman in Black' at the Fortune Theatre in Covent Garden and Year 13 are going to see the critically acclaimed 'Amadeus' at the National Theatre. Please can I remind all students to bring in their reply slips as soon as possible.
Below is Joe Davies perspective on the Year 13 examination process.
On Thursday the 11th of January, our Year 13 drama group undertook our practical exam. This consisted of a monologue and a group practical performance. Each of us performed a very different monologue ranging from comedy to tragedy. Everyone performed amazing monologues and we were all very pleased with the final performances.
The next part was the group performances. The class was in three groups performing the plays: Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht, Five Kinds of Silence by Shelah Stevenson, and Metamorphoses by Steven Berkoff. Each of the groups performed excellently with emotional, funny and educational performances.
Unlike the rest of my classmates, I decided to do set design, rather than performing in the group performances. I started by planning my set for Caucasian Chalk Circle, before the summer holidays and then continued to work on it over the holiday with Rachael and Jonny, in the SandPit. I decided to have a revolving set, as the central focus of my design, so that I was able to have the background changing with a lot more ease than bringing set pieces on and off. I really enjoyed working with the SandPit team, and had fun bringing my set to life. It was a very rewarding experience to see something that I had been designing and planning for months becoming a real piece. Along with my set I had to create a model box and detailed plans of the performance space.
My class and I would all like to thank the drama teachers, Mrs Birkett, Miss Malherbe as well as the SandPit team, Jonny, Rachael and Liam, for all their help, not just for this performance, but over the last two years.

We are well and truly into the New Year now and it’s getting busy at the SandPit Theatre. Velocity is only two weeks away and we can’t wait to get rehears-als underway!

Rotary Youth Speaks Competition 2018
The Rotary Club hold an annual competition which
allows young people to prepare speeches around a topic of their choice. The art of public speaking is an essential life-skill for young people to develop. By preparing and participating in this event students were given the opportunity to improve their confidence in this area.
On Monday 8th January, our team competed in the
Senior age range (14-18) against a range of schools from the area, including sixth forms.
Our team took on the challenging task of exploring
and discussing the potential risks that are approaching with the ever-increasing development of Artificial Intelligence. Research was rigorous and opened their eyes to the expanding technological world around them.
Our team, Jacob Head, Emily Collis, Charlotte
Frankl, Arran Rafot and Samuel Vosper, were committed to their preparations for this event and performed excellently on the night. I would like to congratulate the team on coming 3rd place. A real achievement which the whole team should be proud of. Well done!

PE News Well done to all the boys who were involved in last
Saturday’s football fixtures V Dame Alice Owens. It was a great morning of football with us taking two wins and two draws away from our hosts. This is always a very tough fixture against a strong sporting school who have seen much success in football in the last few years. The Y10’s went up 3-0 before conceding late on against our possible County Cup quarter final opponents. The Y9s capitalised on some questionable goalkeeping to take an early 2-0 lead before Jake Clarke’s sublime free-kick added a 3rd to seal a great 3-0 win against last season’s County Cup finalists. The Y8 team took an early lead through a superb Liam Watters strike, however Owens managed to go into the half with a 2-1 lead. Joseph Beardon then stepped up with an equally impressive goal to take a 2-2 draw. The Y7s also could not be separated in a very close match with some excellent football from both teams. A goal from Ashton Latter midway through the 2nd half looked to have been enough for us to get the win, however the pressure from Owens late on in the game saw them grab a late equaliser from a corner. Well done to all the boys involved.
The Y11 basketball team played St. Columba’s in the National Cup on Monday. It was a superb game with both teams showing some great offensive basketball and a number of individuals demonstrating great defensive skills. The team played well in what was a slightly reduced squad. The team led early on and seemed in control, however some late foul trouble essentially cost the game as we ended up with 4 on court after some players being fouled out eventually losing 65-56.
The Y9 basketball team played in the County Rally on Wednesday afternoon at Queens School. We were drawn in Group 1 against Sir Frederick Osborn, Simon Balle and Beaumont school. We comfortably won all 3 games putting us through into the semi-finals as winners of the group. We then played Queens in the semi-final, knowing they were last year’s champions. We quickly established a lead through some superb exchanges between Ryaan Hussain and Ryan Gallagher, which our team in the second half comfortably held. We then went on to the final against Parmiters and ended up 5 down at half time knowing our slightly stronger team were to play 2nd.
Unfortunately on this occasion we were out played by a better team on the day and ended up losing on the day. Runners up in the county is a fantastic achievement so well done to the whole team.
Well done to the Senior Rugby team on beating Broxbourne 52-3 in the County Shield on Wednesday. This puts the team into semi-final to be redrawn in the next few weeks. It was a solid performance with a number of players missing, however this did give others’ the opportunity to play out of position and has given the management a selection headache for the next round.
