IsogeometricAnalysisinIndustrialTurbomachineryApplicationsJointMSc-projectby

MotivationIsogeometricAnalysis(IgA)isarecentmethodologyforthecomputationalstudyofalltypesofengi-neeringproblems. Ithasbeenintroducedin[Hu05]asauniversalframeworkthataimsatbridgingthegapbetweengeometrymodelling inComputer-AidedDesign(CAD)systemsandfiniteelementanalysis(FEA)offluidflow,structuralmechanicsandfluid-structureinteractionproblems.Theessen-tialkeytechnologythatbringsthetwoworlds,CADandFEA,closertogetheristhecommonuseofadvanced Spline technologies to model complex geometries like the Turing-Mid-Turbine-Frame(TMTF),which is a performance-critical part ofmostmodern aircraft engines (shown left),and torepresentapproximatesolutionsto,say,acomputationalfluid-flowanalysis(shownright).

Asamajorbenefit,thereisnomoreneedofanirreversibleapproximateconversionoftheaccurategeometryparameterizationintoadiscretecomputationalgrid,whichallowsformuchmoreeffectiveshapeoptimizationprocessesastheyareneededinindustrialturbomachineryapplications.

MTUAeroEngineslocatedinMunich,Germany,isoneoftheworld’sleadingaircraftenginemanu-facturersandservicesprovideswithstate-of-the-artin-housedevelopmentworkflows.Intheongo-ingEU-fundedMOTORproject,MTUhasaddednoveladaptiveSplinetechnologiesintotheirwork-flow,which givesmuchmore flexibility in designing the shape of the TMTF flow passage (shownright),whichinturnenablesthedesignofmoreenergy-efficientaircrafteengines.

ProblemdescriptionandchallengesThetaskofthismasterthesisistoparticipateinthejointdevelopmentofanIgA-solverforcompressibleviscousflowsandadvanceittoamaturitylevelthatenablesitsuseinindustrialturbomachineryapplica-tions.Asastartingpoint,aninviscidcompressibleflowsolverisavailablefromtheaforementionedMO-TORproject,withactivedevelopmenttakingplaceatTUDelftandLodzUniversityofTechnology,Poland.

Themaintasksofthismasterthesisareasfollows:

1. Familiarizationwith theconceptof isogeometricanalysisboth forgeometrymodellingandnu-mericalfluid-flowanalysisandacquirementofbasicknowledgeingasdynamics.

2. DevelopmentofperiodicboundaryconditionsintotheIgAflowsolverandperformanceofpre-liminary3DstudiesofcompressibleflowsthroughMTU’sdemonstratorTMTFflowpassage.

3. Extensionofthe3DNavier-StokesIgA-solvertoarotatingframeofreference,whichisrequiredtomodeltheflowbehaviorinrotatingenginepartsupstreamanddownstreamthestaticTMTF.

4. CouplingofthestaticNavier-StokesIgA-solverwithitsrotatingcounterpartandperformanceofpreliminary3DstudiesofcompressibleflowsthroughMTU’sdemonstratorTMTFflowpassage.

Possibleadditionaltask:

TheutilizedsoftwarelibraryG+Smo[GS]providesstate-of-the-arttechnologiesforgeneratinglo-callyrefinedB-splinesbases,so-calledtruncatedhierarchicalB-Splines(THB-Splines)[Gi12].Up-onsuccessfulcompletionof theaforementionedmain tasks, theuseofTHB-Splinescanbeex-ploitedtoimprovethegeometryandsolutionrepresentationbyrefiningtheSplinespacelocally.

Themainchallengesofthisambitiousmasterprojectconsistinthebleeding-edgenatureoftheutilizedtechnologiesbeingunderactivedevelopmentandthenecessarymaturity levelof the IgA-solver that isrequiredforbeingabletosolvechallengingindustrialturbomachineryapplicationsofthistype.

TimescheduleTheprojectiscarriedoutinstrongcollaborationwithMTUAeroEngines,Germany.Thestudentisexpectedtostaypartoftheprojecttime(rangingfrom2weeksto3months)atMTUinMunich.
