**This paper studies the marriage custom of watta satta in ruralPakistan. Principally, it's a tribal custom in Pakistan of exchange ofbrides between two clans. But as well tribal areas, it is widelyfollowed/practiced in different areas of Pakistan and known withdifferent name. This is an old age tradition. Watta-Satta is thepractice of bartering bride for bride. In order for you to marry offyour son, you must also have a daughter to marry off in return.Watta-Satta may have many reasons i.e. security, honour, poverty etc.The nobility of some cultures tend to use Watta-Satta amongdifferent factions or states as a method to secure social ties betweenthem. The betrothal is considered a binding contract upon the families.The breaking of a betrothal can have serious consequences both forthe families and for the betrothed individuals themselves. It isconsidered an illegal Nikah due to similarity with NIKAH -E -SHIGHARwhich is forbidden in Sharia. But it's not true in actual fact, Althoughit has many demerits and imperfection, but there are a little reasonsand sense due to which it has become officially permitted.

The relationship thus established is usedto maintain a kind of "balance" between the two families. If there shouldbe a falling out in relationships between the two families, these womenare used to take revenge.

A female Participant stated that without watta-satta custom, our girlswould never get married, whereas outside families demand dowry.Therfore, some people follow the custom because it saves them form thedowry curse. In such situation both the families give dowry according totheir capacity and in the "Nikah Nama" except mehar, they do not writeanything else. otherwise dowry is demanded or given on equal basis. It isdone so that the in laws could not quanel with the girl and she live withdignity and with prestige.
