What is IPV6?
IPv6 stands for Internet Protocol version 6. intended
to succeed Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4)
IPv6 is also known as Ipng, which stands for IP Next
Generation.
IPv6 was developed by the Internet Engineering TaskForce (IETF).

Need of ipv6
• IPv4 address exhaustion.
• IPv4 allows 32 bits for an IP address, and therefore
has 232 (4,294,967,296) possible addresses.
• IANA – the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority –
had allocated its last available blocks of IPv4addresses to the five Regional Internet Registrars
(RIRs).

IPV6
• IPv6 allows more users and devices to communicate on the
Internet.
• IPv6 addresses have 128 bits for it’s address so itallows 3.4×1038 addresses.
• we have a maximum of 2¹²⁸ addresses available, or
340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456enough to give allow many devices to communicate for long
future.

Ipv6 addressing
• Example of an old and new addressing scheme:
• Old - IPv4 address:
• 129.14.12.200• 10000001.00001110.00001100.11001000 (32 Bit)
• New - IPv6 address:
• 1029:9183:81E2:0000:0000:01D5:2115:019B
• 0001000000101001: …………….. : ……………. : ……………. :……………. : ……………. : ……………. : ……………. (128 bit )

• To simplify the entire
IP format, some of the
IPv4 header fields were
dropped or made optional
in IPv6.

Features of ipv6
Improved efficiency in routing and packet handling.
Support for embedded IPSec
Elimination of the need for network address
translation (NAT)
Expanded Addressing Capabilities
Header Format Simplification
Flow Labeling Capability Authentication and Privacy Capabilities

• Types of IPv6 Addresses
•IPv6 addresses are broadly classified into three categories:
1) Unicast addresses
• 2) Multicast addresses
• 3) Anycast addresses.
• IPv4 to IPv6 conversion
• You can convert IPv4 to IPv6 online

Summary
• Deployment to ipv6 has begun
• Ipv6 not only providing the large address
space but also gives security, multi homing,
best mobility support, efficient routing.
