Would you buy something from
someone you didn't trust?
I am going to discuss the
importance of relationship
building for generating sales and
repeat sales.
In the end you don’t want to sell
anything to anybody, all you want
to do is get their name and their
e-mail address and build a
relationship with them.
The bottom line is no trust - no sale.
Let's take this to the offline world.
How do you feel when someone
comes round to your house, knocks on
your door and tries to sell you
something?
Do you even open the door to them?
If they look like a salesperson then you
probably don't bother!
What about email? Do you bother to
open emails from people you don't
know?
OK I guess they would end up in your
spam folder anyway but suppose you
see an ad and sign up to receive
something.
You don't know anything about the
person placing the ad at this point. It's
just an ad.
Now let's take a different scenario.
You read some content online and
you think that it sounds good and you
then sign up to receive a free gift that
they are offering.
You then get an email from them.
Your mind would probably go
back to the content you had read
online or the free gift that they
had sent to you.
There would be some kind of
connection there.
You see the point at which you
should start building a relationship
is even before someone joins your
list!
Yes, you can use your list to
develop and nurture that
relationship but you need a
connection before someone joins
your list.
If there is a specific reason why
someone has joined your list
because they have developed a
connection with you in some way
then they will be far more likely to
open your emails afterwards.
For you to build upon trust and
credibility your subscribers need to
open your emails!
In order for them to make a
purchase from you at some point
there must already be enough
trust.
If you can have a situation
whereby people already have a
certain degree of trust before they
sign up to your list then they
become far more qualified to turn
into buyers during your email
campaign.
If you continue to nurture the
relationship and provide value
then you will ultimately build a list
with repeat customers.
