The Webb’s May Interiors auction presents another superb offering of quality antiques, collectables and designer furnishings
We are pleased to be auctioning a rare Meiji-era formal court uniform, formerly the property of Prince Ito Hirobumi (1841–1909), Samurai of the Choshu domain, Japanese statesman and four times Prime Minister of Japan Ito Hirobumi was responsible for establishing a cabinet, a civil service (1885) and a privy council (1888), which he headed He supervised (1883–89) the drafting of the constitution of 1889 and was intimate adviser to the Emperor In 1905, Ito forced an agreement making Korea a virtual protectorate of Japan and became
(in 1906) resident-general there His assassination by a Korean in 1909 served as a pretext for annexation of Korea His impressive dress uniform offers a close link to an extraordinary statesman and an important part of Japanese political history
The sale opens with a Maritime section which consists of the collection of ex-Royal New Zealand Navy Servicemen’s Association and sailing memorabilia from Mr and Mrs Croix-Grut; they are believed to have been the first New Zealand couple to circumnavigate the globe in a yacht Also on offer is a collection of vintage clothes, religious iconography, two impressive shoulder-mount taxidermies, one of a giraffe and one of a kudu, fine
Indian portrait miniatures, Victorian English porcelain, and a selection of good Victorian and Georgian sterling-silver tableware The Oriental section covers Chinese and Japanese porcelain, bronze, textiles, jade, furniture and export-ware; as well, there is a fine selection of English and European furniture, clocks, rugs and chandeliers Including a superb 19th Century Pollard Oak bureau bookcase Plus two spectacular white rhinoceros horns
