How to Use This ApplicationEach week of the A Word a Day interactive application follows the same format, making it easy for both students and teachers to use. Teachers can use an electronic whiteboard or projection system to lead interactive class lessons, or one or more students can complete the activities on their own at a computer.
Quick Tips for Getting Started
Log in to Evan-Moor Portals and click on the icon for A Word A Day. This will bring up the Available Units menu, where you can select Week 1 to begin. Then choose the word or activity you would like students to complete from the week’s menu.
Click on Quick launch next lesson to jump to the lesson that comes after the one you completed last.
Title Resources
From the menu for the weekly unit, select a day from the left column, then click on the green checkmark in the right column to launch the lesson.

To set up your preferences, select the Preferences button found in the top right of each activity screen, then choose the font type, size, and color you would like to use. You may also change the position of the Drag and Drop Word Box to the bottom of the screen to make it easier for students to reach on an interactive whiteboard.

Weekly Walk-ThroughFour new words are presented each week. Then the week’s words are reviewed through interactive oral and written activities designed to reinforce student understanding.
You can work through the weekly lessons sequentially or pick and choose activities based on the words you’d like students to practice.
Days 1–4: Presenting the Words
To begin a lesson, select Begin Lesson from the main menu and choose the week and word you would like students to practice. Each new word is presented on screen with:

A definitionEach word is defined in a complete sentence.
An example sentenceEach new word is used in a sentence designed to provide enough context for students to easily grasp its meaning.
The part of speechThe part of speech is identified. You may or may not want to focus on this information, depending on the skill level of your students.
To introduce new words, read the definition and the example sentence, explaining as needed before conducting the interactive oral activities.

Days 1–4: Interactive Activities
Each word comes with a critical attributes prompt and an open-ended personal connection prompt.
• Critical Attributes Prompts are presented in a discussion-generating format such as self-correcting multiple-choice questions. The questions require students to identify features that are and are not attributes of the target word. This is one of the most effective ways to help students recognize subtleties of meaning.
• Graphic Organizer Prompts are provided for grades 4, 5, and 6+. Students are asked to organize words into categories to reinforce understanding
• Personal Connection Prompts are presented as open-ended questions that students and teachers answer by typing out or writing responses in the space provided. Students are asked to share an opinion, an idea, or a personal experience that demonstrates their understanding of the new word.

Day 5: Interactive Oral Reviews
Each interactive oral review features four oral activities that provide you with prompts to review the week’s words. A word box with definitions helps reinforce word meaning and assists in the completion of each activity.
Students interact with the words by:
• Dragging and dropping words to answer questions and complete sentences.
• Selecting words to answer questions and complete sentences.

Day 5: Interactive Written Reviews
Each interactive written review contains four multiple-choice items and an open-ended writing activity that can be used to assess students’ mastery. A word box with definitions helps reinforce word meaning and assists in the completion of each activity.
Students interact with the words by:
• selecting words or phrases to answer questions and complete sentences.
• completing an open-ended writing prompt, enabling you to assess students’ mastery of the words of the week. Teachers and students can brainstorm ideas and write or type their responses together as a class or in small groups. For extra practice, students can also complete the activities independently at a computer.
