TUTORIAL WORK
What is Material Handling?Material handling is the movement,
protection, storage and control of
materials and products throughout
manufacturing, warehousing, distribution,
consumption and disposal. As a process,
material handling incorporates a wide
range of manual, semi-automated and
automated equipment and systems that
support logistics and make the supply
chain work.
Application of Material HandlingTheir application helps with:
• Forecasting
• Resource allocation
• Production planning
• Flow and process management
• Inventory management and control
• Customer delivery
• After-sales support and service
A company’s material handling system and processes are put in place to improve
customer service, reduce inventory, shorten delivery time, and lower overall handling
costs in manufacturing, distribution and transportation.
Forecasting
• This comprehensive
forecast of material
handling equipment
manufacturing is
released each
quarter and looks 12
to 18 months forward
to anticipate changes
in the material
handling and logistics
market place.
Resource Allocation
•Resource allocation is
a process and strategy
involving a company
deciding where scarce
resources should be
used in the production
of goods or services.
Production Planning
• It establishes handling
and storage activities,
which is cost effective
into integrated system
design.
FLOW AND PROCESS
• The flow is the most
important parameter
of a production
system; almost all
improvements are
reflected directly in
the process flow of a
plant, which impacts
directly in the costs
of the organization.
INVENTORY AND MANAGEMENT
CONTROL
•The objective of
inventory management
is to provide
uninterrupted
production, sales,
and/or customer
services levels at the
minimum cost..
CUSTOMER DELIVERY
• The fee for order
depends on the type of
product that the
company are
purchasing. The time
are depending of size
weight and volume.
Transport Equipment• Transport equipment is used to move material from one location to another (e.g.,
between workplaces, between a loading dock and a storage area, etc.), while
positioning equipment is used to manipulate material at a single location. The major
subcategories of transport equipment are conveyors, cranes, and industrial trucks.
Material can also be transported manually using no equipment.
Conveyors Cranes Industrial Trucks
Difference between use of conveyors, cranes, and industrial trucks for transport with respect to their path and area of operation.
Unit Load Information• Unit load formation equipment is used to restrict materials so that they maintain their
integrity when handled a single load during transport and for storage. If materials are
self-restraining (e.g., a single part or interlocking parts), then they can be formed into a
unit load with no equipment. Examples of unit load formation equipment include pallets,
skids, slip-sheets, tote pans, bins/baskets, cartons, bags, and crates.

Storage EquipmentStorage equipment is used for holding or buffering materials over a period of
time. The design of each type of storage equipment, along with its use in
warehouse design, represents a trade-off between minimizing handling costs, by
making material easily accessible, and maximizing the utilization of space (or
cube).
