Lesson Plan: Unit 1
Unit 1: Foundations for Functions
Chapter One: The Language And Tools Of Algebra
Chapter Two: Solving Linear equations
Class: Algebra 1AB /Period 2 Grade Level: 9 Time required: 2-3 weeks
Essential Question/Idea: How do people simplify generalized problems and real world
relationships by using the Language and Tools of Algebra?
Culminating Assessment: Students, in groups of four will use the main ideas mastered
in Unit One to create an entertaining game. Individually students will also take an exam.
Chapter 1 Exam is Scheduled for October 7, 2011
Chapter 2 Exam is scheduled for Nov. 9, 2011
Recommended focus Standards:
Alg.1 2.0* Students understand and use such operations as taking the opposite,
finding the reciprocal, taking a root, and raising to a fractional power. They understand
and use the rules of exponents.
(4 Questions)
Alg.1 -4.0* Students simplify expressions prior to solving linear equations and
inequalities in one variable, such as: 3(2x-5) + 4(x-2) = 12. ( 3 Questions)
Alg. 1- 5.0* Students solve multistep problems, including word problems, involving
linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable and provide justification for each
step.
Recurring Standards in the course
Alg. 1- 24.0 Students use and know simple aspects of a logical argument.

Instructor: Mrs. Kassouf-Room 206
2
Alg. 1- 25.0 Students use properties of the number system to judge the validity of
results, to justify each step of a procedure, and to prove or disprove statements.
Possibility and Structure
This unit sets the stage for success in Algebra by providing time to review arithmetic
(whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percent) and proceeds on to cover
foundational algebra skills necessary to solve equations. Subsequent to this review,
students will proceed to solving equations in one variable (including equations with
absolute value).
