LITERACY
INFORMATION LITERACY• “To be information literate, a person must be able to
recognize when information is needed and have the
ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information. The information literate individuals are those who have learned how to learn” (ALA, 1998).
• They know how to learn because they know how knowledge is organized, know how to find information, and know how to use information in such a way that others can learn from them (Byerly/Brodie, 1999).

WHAT YOU CAN DO
Adapt or adopt international information literacy standards and practices
Identify the information literacy program that works best for you and your institution
Adopt or design a programme based on national and international experiences
Identify what is required to implement the program
Regard the information literacy process as non-linear, you may skip steps and change their order
Work on a strategic plan to chart the course of your goals and actions
Involve all relevant parties in the planning process: your library team, faculty/teachers, administrators, and the final decision-maker for the project
CONCLUSION
Big or small, your SRC has an INFORMATION LITERACY role.
