WelcometoDataAnalysisandKnowledgeDiscovery.Asyoungprofessionalsinterestedinthecareerininformationscience,thiscoursewillprepareyoufordatascienceanddataanalyticsjobsandequipyoubroadknowledgeoftherequiredtools,techniques,andmethods.Thiscourseisdesignedfortheaspiringorpracticinginformationprofessionalandcoversthebasicsofworkingwithdatafromahands-onandpracticalperspective.Itisimportantforyoutohaveastrongunderstandingoftheoriesassociatedwithdataanalysis,datamining,textminingandknowledgediscoveryprinciples,concepts,theories,andpractices.Iwanttosharealittleinformationaboutmyself.IhaveaBachelorsdegreeinBiomedicalEngineeringandaMastersdegreeinInformationManagement.Additionally,IhaveasMastersdegreeinInformationSystems.Ihave16yearsofworkexperienceintheITsectorwhereIstartedmycareerasaBusinessAnalystandworkedmywayuptoserveasSectionHead,SystemsandKnowledgeManagement,whichinvolvedbeingaSystemscorporatetrainer.Ihavebeenanadjunctfacultymember,andhavetaughtcoursesinthemastersprogramininformationmanagement.IamcurrentlyworkingtowardsmyPh.D.inInformationSciencewithaconcentrationinCyberSecurityintheCollegeofInformation,hereattheUniversityofNorthTexas.

CourseWeekThiscoursewillrunweekly,fromSundayat5pmthroughthefollowingSundayat5pm.Assignmentswillbedueasnotedonthecoursecalendar,typicallyonThursdaysby11:59pm.Eachcoursemodulewillrunforatwo-weekperiodandaftertheperiodelapses,themoduleswillbeclosed,anditwillnotbepossibletosubmitassignmentsbeyondthatdayandtime.TheexceptiontothelengthofthemodulewillbeModule1,whichwillrunforonlyoneweek.CourseDescriptionThiscoursewillintroducethestudenttodataanalysis,datamining,textmining,andknowledgediscoveryprinciples,concepts,theories,andpractices.Itisdesignedfortheaspiringorpracticinginformationprofessionalandcoversthebasicsofworkingwithdatafromahands-onandpracticalperspective.Classeswillincorporatelecture,discussion,practiceoflearnedconcepts,andreadings.ThestudentwilllearnhowtoapproachdataanddataminingtasksandtechniquesusingMicrosoftExcelandotherdataanalysistoolsthroughpracticeexercisesandinstructorledtraining.Examplesofexercisetopicsinclude:Excel:AGentleIntroduction,Gettingtoknowyourdatathroughtables,Pivotingdatatogainmulti-dimensionalperspectives,andwhat-Ifscenariosforbudgetingandforecasting.Thestudentwilllearnthebasicprinciplesandtheoriesofdatamining,andtextminingtechniquesaswellasthebusinessapplicationofdataminingandknowledgediscoverytools.CourseObjectives/LearningOutcomesThelearnerwillbeanactiveandengagedparticipantindiscussionforumswithinthelearningcommunitybyanalyzing,constructing/creating,andevaluatinginformationpresentedwithinthetextbook,externalreadings/resources,studentresearch,andclassactivities.ThelearnerwillbeabletoconstructanappropriatebibliographyinAPA6fromscholarlysourcesofmaterialforstudyandresearch.Thelearnerwillbeabletodemonstrateanunderstandingofthebasicprinciples,concepts,theories,andpracticesofdataanalysis,datamining,andknowledgediscoveryanddiscusstheinterplaybetweenthem.Thelearnerwillapplygainedknowledgetosolverealisticproblemswithdatasetsprovidedusingskillsdevelopedinthecourse.TeachingMethod/PhilosophyThiscoursewillbetaughtasafullyonlinecourse.ItwillbeconductedwithinBlackboardLearn.Coursematerialwillbeprovidedelectronically,online.Instructionwillbeprovidedinwrittenformandcanbefoundbyclickingthecoursecontentareaofthecoursemenu,andthenclickingModule.Discussionwilltakeplaceonlineinasynchronousdiscussionforums.Hands-onexerciseswillbeprovidedfor5ofthe7modulesinthecoursetoguidethestudent
