The Dutch East Indies
Indonesia in 1750
• in the late 1700s the dutch had capitalized on Indonesian ports after receiving land in Indonesia from England
• Using these ports the Dutch were able to then dominate the trading world
• The dutch wanted these ports to
gain access to resources for
industrialization
Dutch Imperialism of Indonesia• The Dutch used Indonesia to receive profit from
their exports
• It would be this profit that would continue to fuel Dutch industrialization and further imperialism
Dutch Contro
• The Dutch did not want the Indonesians to self-govern themselves.
• They employed direct control through the Dutch East India company (VOC)
• After their bankruptcy, the government took control and implemented indentured servitude.
• There was some dispute during wars, but the counsel of Vienna allowed the Dutch to keep their sphere of influence over Indonesia.
Policies
• The Indos were viewed as Europeans under Dutch law, and allowed to serve in local administration
• This gave them a “sense” of being Dutch, which helped instill loyalty and repelled desires for independence
• Put in the Cultivation System: peasant and farmers were forced to grow commercial crops for the dutch
• Local insurgents were put down by the Dutch’s superior strength
Changes• All fertile land was used for Dutch plantations
• Lower classes were exploited and suffered from awful conditions and lack of food
• Schools set up to educate the Indonesians
• Many Europeans migrated to the area, increasing its population
Road to Independence
● Dutch wanted to Annex the Archipelago of Indonesia
● took it because they wanted to be the main sea power
● Dutch took it in the Aceh War (1873-1914)● Indonesia proclaimed independence in 1945● became independent from the Indonesian
national revolution (1945-1949)
Long-Term effects
● The dutch exploited the people and the land● took a lot of their resources● Education was improved and scholars were
introduced to ideas of liberty, equality, and western thinking
● Indonesia turned into one big place for hard labor on crops
● Without the Dutch, Indonesia would not be a modernized country today
