Safe Cities for Women and Girls Global Initiative
• 5 pilot cities– Quito– Kigali– Cairo– New Delhi– Port Moresby
• Expanded into 12 cities from developing and developed countries
Port Moresby: Safe City Programme
• Aim: create safe, clean, and inclusive markets for women and men to feel free and empowered.
Why markets?• Agriculture - key income stream for 86% of the
population in PNG• 55% of women reported experiencing some form of
violence in the previous 12 months while at the market.
• 22% females report experiencing more than one incident of SV in the market.
• 64% of females and males reported witnessing some form of SV in the market.
• SV was not the only problem, extortion, theft, ethnic clashes and other forms of violence.
• Local population not going to markets and virtually no tourism in markets due to safety concerns
• Health and sanitation concerns, lack of maintenance and planning
• Markets are social spaces and provide an opportunity to build and strengthen communities
Designed based on facts and needs identified by market communities
