The Last Teardrop By Paul Stehrenberger
It is often said that there is a special bond between a mother
and her first-born son. I personally have a hard time subscribing to that
notion because I was a first-born son, after three older sisters and before
two younger brothers, and growing up in a family of six siblings didn’t
allow for special treatment for any one of us.
As far as I remember, my mom loved us all the same. She was
way too busy with washing, cooking and cleaning to give anyone
preference. The first one to get up in the morning and the last one to go
to bed at night, she was the essence of an “energizer bunny.”
In days past, it was customary to leave the nest after high-
school, so all of us followed that tradition and moved to different parts
of the world. Some moved within a couple of hundred miles from
home, others like me, thousands of miles away. We would visit our

parents whenever possible, and often they would visit
us. All of us got married and started families of our
own. Sad to say, the whole extended family never
again came together at the same time or the same
place.
When I received a letter from my dad,
informing me that Mom was diagnosed with
Alzheimer's, a form of dementia, I was in denial. How
could that be? My mom, who read hundreds of books,
solved thousands of crossword puzzles, and generally
exercised her brain daily, could possibly be afflicted
with Alzheimer’s. It had to be a mistake, maybe a
misdiagnosis.
After a few months, I decided to fly home
and check out the situation for myself. I was
disappointed to learn from my dad that Mom had been
slowly forgetting things and, at times, not knowing
where she was. I tried to keep an open mind, but
realized from the moment I saw her that something
wasn’t quite right. She did recognize me but there was
no joy in her demeanor. I wanted to hug her like old
times, but her eyes stared at me as if she questioned
my identity. I was unable to communicate with her no
matter how hard I tried.
After three days I left my parents to return
home, hoping that with time and proper care she
would become her old self again. Time went by and
my dad would occasionally write to me and tell me
about her condition. It wasn’t improving.
Another year or so passed when my wife and
I decided to spend Christmas at my parent’s house.
Everyone was excited, especially our two kids who
hadn’t seen their grandparents in years. We flew to my
hometown where mom and dad greeted us at the
airport. Dad was delighted to see us, but Mom seemed
distant. She didn’t recognize my wife or our kids, and
she looked at me as if questioning my presence.
We celebrated Christmas Eve with a
delicious dinner, prepared by my dad, and then
exchanged gifts. The mood was festive and cheerful.
We drank gluewine, a traditional hot drink with plenty
of cherry brandy and cinnamon in it. There was
hugging and kissing and everyone seemed happy
except Mom. I walked over to her and gently embraced
her. I held her close to me for a long moment as if I
could make her well again. She did not resist my
embrace. “I love you, Mom,” I said quietly. When we
separated, I looked at her, anticipating some kind of
response. She looked confused and showed no reaction,
but then I noticed a single teardrop rolling down her
cheek. I was filled with sadness and began to tear up.
Was it possible that , at that moment in time,
two brain cells in her memory bank made contact with
one another, and for a brief instance, enabled her to
remember me? I’d like to think so. Maybe there is
something about that special bond between a mother
and her first-born son.
Mom passed away the following spring. There
were few tears. Instead, we celebrated her life and, for
the first times in many, many years, all of us gathered
together again as a family.
