to develop individual learning plans. The programme
focuses on clinical skills development, problem solving
and professional development sessions, including ethics,
accessing learning material online, and audit. Teaching
focuses around the evidence based management of the
two most common problems in Bangladesh, diarrhoea
and respiratory infections.
I had great suspicion before joining the programme,
whether I will be able to learn something, and increase
my knowledge, as there is little scope of exposure but
I realized this fellowship programme makes a lot of
difference.Dr Mainul, Clinical Fellow
Introducing new ICDDR,B lawyer,
Mr Jens Hinricher
Mr Jens Hinricher joined ICDDR,B on 1 March 2010
as General Counsel. He is responsible for the smooth
and continued operation ofthe contracts component
of the Ofce of Research
Administration. He also
advises the Executive
Director and ICDDR,B
management on contractual
and legal matters as well
as negotiating agreements
and technical revisions
with bilateral and
multilateral institutions, governments, foundations,
research institutions and the private sector, including
multinational pharmaceutical companies.
I enjoy living in Bangladesh though the trafc, constant noise
and pollution dont always make it easy. Getting out of the
city, travelling through the countryside and all the paddy
elds is very enjoyable and I love going to places like the tea
gardens in Srimongal to relax and unwind. I hope to be able
to travel a bit more in Bangladesh and explore the beauty
and richness of this country places like the Chittagong, St.
Martins Island and Kuakata are high on my list.
Dhaka Hospital piloting
a Clinical Fellowship
ICDDR,B recruits junior doctors as clinical fellows to work
on the hospital wards and triage on shifts during day and
night. They carry not only the bulk of the hospital clinical
workload of the Dhaka Hospitals special care unit, short
stay, the long stay, respiratory and Jagori ward but also
the inpatient unit out in Mirpur treatment centre and at
Matlab Hospital. Besides managing patients they also learn
as much as they can from the opportunities presenting
themselves on daily basis.
This programme works because of the willingness of
all the tutors to teach and their encouragement and
enthusiasm. Prioritization by hospital management of
improving standards through real clinical education has
made this possible. Dr Teresa Pietroni, Primary Health
Care Physician and coordinator of the programme
There is an academic half-day for learning besides
providing services to the sick patients. From class we
learnt how to get the current information about diseases
and drugs by using internet. Dr Monira, Clinical Fellow
Following a series of faculty development workshops, run in partnership with Human Resources
Development in 2008-2009 a pilot programme for
clinical fellows training was introduced in June 2009.
During the six months, the 24 clinical fellows attend an
academic half-day per week, and separate tutorial times

High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR). Mr Hinricher is married and
his wife, a career member of the British
diplomatic service, is working at the
British High Commission in Dhaka.
Ami bangla khabar khub bhalo lage - Ilike Bangla food very much. Amongst my
favourite items are lal shak (red spinach),
olkopi (German turnip always reminds
me of home) and I love most of the
seafood e.g. smoked hilsa or shorshe-ilish
(sh in mustard sauce with green chilies).
In terms of dessert, nothing beats fresh
mango puree together with some good
quality vanilla ice cream.
Mr Hinricher completed his
undergraduate and postgraduate legal
studies at the University of Mnster
in Germany and the University of
Kent at Canterbury in the United
Kingdom. He also holds a Master of
Laws degree from the University ofNottingham where he specialized in
the law of International Organizations
and Human Rights and was awarded a
scholarship by the Universitys Human
Rights Law Centre for undertaking
further research.
He gained international work experience
working as an expert assigned to aEuropean Union mission to Zambia and
later held a post with the United Nations

Black and White Ball
This year
the Black
and White
Ball was held on
12 February 2010,
celebrating the
Centres Golden
Jubilee (50 years).
Standard
Chartered Bank
CEO, Mr Jim
McCabe was
Chief Guest of
the ball, held at
the Radisson
Water Garden
Hotel. The evening began
with pre-dinner cocktails on the lawns
overlooking the ball room and the
swimming pool, with approximately
350 guests including staff and clients. Ms
Munni performed a spectacular Odissi
dance, much appreciated by the guests.
Meeting people, wearing their best
dresses and the most important thing of
the Ball was everybody looked happy and
smiling. Shakeel Mahmud, Coordinator,
Monitoring and Evaluation Framework
Highlights of the night included the four
airline tickets given away as door prizesand four others were auctioned. Other
auction items included:
Two signed cricket bats by the
Indian and Sri Lankan cricket teams
A chess board donated by the 3rd
Grandmaster of Bangladesh
A signed tshirt by Sachin Tendulkar
New to this years event were pledge
cards that were distributed to collect
donations for the Hospital EndowmentFund and amazingly around US $10,000
was received. Stone Free, a live band
drew a large number of guests to the
dance oor with its music over ve
decades, starting from the 60s. The
Centre is grateful to the airlines and to
the individuals who generously donated
to the event.
This was my rst Black and White Ball
and I thank Dr Nashaba Matin and
Dr Mark Pietroni for creating opportunityfor 20 staffs from Dhaka Hospital and
Jagori unit to attend the Ball. I enjoyed the
event very much; it was a retreat for us.
It was really nice to meet many people
from the Centre as well as from other
organizations. I enjoyed the food, dancing
with the music and the overall environment.
I got to see salsa dance on the dance oor
after a long time, very entertaining. All the
staff should get the opportunity to attend
the Black and White Ball.Arunthia Zaidi,
