B orn on July 26, 1875, in the small Swiss village of
Kessewil.
He went to boarding school in B asel, Switzerland.
Although his first career choice was archaeology, hewent on to study medicine at the University of B asel.
W hile working under the famous neurologist, Krafft-Ebing, he settled on psychiatry as his career.
He took a position at the B urghoeltzli Mental Hospital inZurich under Eugene B lueler, an expert on schizophrenia.
He married Emma Rauschenbach in 1903.
He died on June 6, 1961 in Zurich.
