WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITYshared by tens of thousands of staff, volunteers, donors, members, partners and allies, to build healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults and families.
When we work as one, we can move people and communities forward. Through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving New York City’s health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors, we’re building the foundations of community, together.
1
As New York City’s leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, we provide kids, adults, families and communities with vital support and opportunities to learn, grow and thrive.

2 AKEEM SIMS
because we believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve
TOGETHER WE STAND FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
College wasn’t an option in the mind of 7th-grader Akeem Sims last year, but now it’s the only option, thanks to the guidance of YScholars staff and the encouragement of peers at the Bed-Stuy Y, who’ll see him all the way through high school.
“I’ve developed such a love for service learning that I know volunteer work will always be a part of my life. I realized I can – I will – go through college and have any career I want.”
Leading the Flushing Y Flyers to its 25th consecutive state championship isn’t the only priority for captain Matt Li, who has grown into his responsibilities as a role model for a balanced life out of the pool.
“I’ve learned so much more than swimming from my teammates. Without them, I’d be the kid who shows up at school and is home on the couch by 4:00. I want to be someone the younger kids look up to.”
3MATT LI
TOGETHER WE STAND FOR HEALTHY LIVING
because we have a responsibility to make a positive and measurable impact on the community’s health in spirit, mind and body
The Vanderbilt Y’s Kerry Watterson was one of the first New Yorkers to discover a network of expertise and support in the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, which helped him step back from the brink of an irreversible disease.
“Seeing diabetes put my mom in a wheelchair at 62 was the wakeup call I needed to make serious changes in my life before it was too late. At the Y I knew I wasn’t on this road alone.”
4 KERRY WATTERSON
After losing 30 lbs. through a weight-loss program, Dawn Gordon and her family joined the Bronx Y and entered into a warm and welcoming environment, where she had the epiphany that led to dropping 70 more.
“Everything changed when I realized that I had to like me, not some target number on the scale. I’ve always had an outgoing personality, but now I have the confidence I didn’t have before.”

6MAMADOU DIABY
because we believe in fostering the care and respect all people need and deserve, by responding to our communities’ most critical social needs.
TOGETHER WE STAND FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
FLOYD MILLER
Arriving in the US was the easy part for Mamadou Diaby, who relied on the Harlem Y’s New Americans Welcome Center for a guiding hand towards citizenship and bringing his family over from Guinea.
“The YMCA is very good for people who don’t have a chance. They respect you, and they’re patient. They know what people need and they help.”
After 19 years of trying to get clean and sober, Floyd Miller found a second family at the YMCA Counseling Service, where a year after completing the program, he was hired as a certified counselor.
“The Y made me believe in myself, made me believe that it’s possible. They never gave up on me, and now I’m helping other addicts and alcoholics.”

EVERY ONE OF OUR VOLUNTEERS helps move people and communities forward, delivering the benefits of good health, strong connections, greater self-confidence and a sense of security to all who seek it. We honor 45 Volunteers of the Year for 2010 and express our thanks for their invaluable contributions of time and talent to help their Y grow stronger in service to others.

KEVIN BURKE JACK LUND10
THERE IS NO ORGANIZATION QUITE LIKE THE YMCA.That’s because in scores of neighborhoods across the five boroughs, we have the presence and partnerships to not just
promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change. We work tirelessly every day to nurture the potential of kids,
improve the city’s health and well-being, and give back and support our neighbors.
We recognize that for communities to succeed, everyone must be given the opportunity to be healthy, confident, connected and
secure. To that end, last year we gave away more than $50.3 million in free and subsidized programs and services to ensure
that 400,000 of our neighbors, regardless of age, income or background, had the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together. Whether staff, volunteer,
donor, member, partner or ally, each individual contributes to our work in building healthy, confident, connected and secure
children, adults and families. Thanks for playing your part in building the foundations of community in New York City.
Yours in service,
Kevin Burke
