HIE Isolde QW cavity tuner
Niobium sputtered on bulk copper substrate 4.5 K, 101.28 MHz, 6 MV/m , 10 W
Initial Cu-Be “oil can” shape design
Costly sensitivity 11 kHz/mm Range 100 kHz higher than required
Flat plate design Machined to 0.3 mm in OFE copper + optimised tip gap
Coarse tuning done by mechanical trimming Requested fine tuning range 36 kHz, resolution 0.5 Hz

HIE Isolde QW cavity tuner
OFE Cu : improved temperature margin for Nb layer for power dissipated
(L. Alberty)
Drawback: mechanical stresses in the tuning plate, very local plastification during first cycle
Not a problem

HIE Isolde QW cavity tuner
• Motorization tuner outside cryostat for reliability and cost reasons • Operation under traction (small range available in push, 0.6 mm at tuning plate) • 1.8 Nm bi phase stepper motor with torque limiter at 1 Nm. • Micro stepping 8000 steps/turn • 1 mm pitch lubricated M6 Metric screw in bronze • Measured resolution motor 0.1 to 0.2 µm • Hysteresis under load : 1 to 2 µm
Reliability feature: Motor completely exchangeable without Dismounting the cryomodule (includes possible exchange of vacuum passage pulling rod )

STUDY INPUTS – KEY DATAS
Stepping motor : 8000 steps/rotation
Motor Stroke : +50mm / -6mm
Tuning plate distortion : -5mm / +0,6mm
Reduction ratio tuner stroke / motor stroke : 1/10
Very narrow space beneath the cavity
Tuning range : 36000 Hz
Tuning accuracy : +/- 0,5 Hz
Tuning plate theoretical resolution accuracy : +/- 40 nanometers !!!
No stick/slip phenomenon allowed due to the requested resolution !
Necessity to use friction-free pivots + a virtual pivot due to the
lack of space + resolution requirements

HIE Isolde QW cavity tuner
Pull to push
Coarse range 39 kHz
Full tuner range 39 kHz Fatigue testing show no significant changes in behavior tuner Back lash when changing from pull to push due to change of contact in knife edge pivot (not expected operation situation) The hysteresis and resolution correspond to what was measured on the motor. This could be further reduced by using Planetary roller screws (not required for HIE ISOLDE)
