WATER GRADINGDistribution Zone Grades:Zone grading, a1 (best) to e, isbased upon the microbiologicaland chemical quality of thewater, along with the conditionof the reticulation system andthe quality of its care, etc. Azone grading should always beconsidered with theaccompanying plant and sourcegrading.Foxton Beach has beenupgraded from d(unsatisfactory level of risk) toa completely satisfactory, extremely low level of risk.Plant and Source Grade is basedprimarily on the likely healthrisks to the community arisingfrom bacteria, protozoa andchemical substances in thesource water, and howeffectively the treatment plantcan act as a barrier to suchcontaminants passing throughto the reticulation system.Possible gradings are A1 (best),then A to E. Each zone inheritsthe plant grading from theworst plant providing it withwater.Foxton Beach has gone to A(completely satisfactory, extremely low level of risk) fromE (unacceptable level of risk).
Glasses will be ‘clinking’ atFoxton Beach as residentscelebrate the Ministry ofHealth Aa grade rating fortheir drinking water.Previously it had beenclassified Ed. HorowhenuaDistrict Council applied for aregrade earlier this month. For the first time the FoxtonBeach supply was compliantwith all aspects of theDrinking Water Standards forthe full 12 months.
Foxton and Shannonresidents will have to waituntil next year for a possibleregrade. Their supplies havebeen compliant for half a yearfollowing upgrades between2012 and 2014.
Foxton's water mains arebeing flushed twice a week inefforts to completely clear thepipes of biological buildupthat has occurred over theyears. As part of the FoxtonWater Treatment Plantupgrade, more chlorine willbe introduced to the supply toensure that enough chlorine ispresent to completelydisinfect the water as ittravels through thereticulation network.
``Chlorine is one of themost commonly useddisinfectants for water and isapplied to deactivate mostmicroorganisms,'' council’sWater Services manager
Sarah Stephen said.“Residents may notice watersmells or tastes slightlydifferent, but it will remaincompletely safe to drink.''
HDC suggests anydiscolouration, odour or tasteissues with the water isusually cleared by running atap for 10-15 minutes to flushthe system. Not all residentsare comfortable with thebrown coloured water.
“I won’t drink water at myplace,” Foxton residentMichael Feyen said. “I’mamazed with the Beachupgrading from E to A, Iwonder how it’s been achieved
. . . with chemicals.”A report from MidCentral
Health's Public HealthServices in September showedFoxton Beach, Foxton andShannon water supplies hadreceived their best-everresults for compliance withthe Drinking WaterStandards.
“We are aware someresidents are still receivingdiscoloured water which is aresult of the treatmentchemicals dislodging materialthat has built up inside pipesover a long period of time,”Kerekere ward CouncillorRoss Brannigan said. “An
issue we are assured willcontinue to decrease overtime.”
Mr Brannigan, a FoxtonBeach resident, said the Beachcommunity should welcomethis positive news. He creditsthe new grading as a goodexample of long-time localcampaigners for better waterquality, council andcommunity working togetherfor excellent results.

Rates changes — district council has sayHorowhenua District Council chiefexecutive David Clapperton — response toproposed rates change.
Horowhenua District Council hassought feedback for a proposal to changefrom land value to capital value-basedrating system.
While not legally obliged to undertakethis pre-consultation, council has done sosimply to help form a rating proposal inthe Draft Long Term Plan.
Our eight-page rating review pre-consultation document provided athorough overview of the initial proposal, including advantages and disadvantagesclearly outlined, to help ratepayersprovide feedback.
In the document, the series of barcharts show the increases and decreases
for every ratepayer group. The middlebars include all those with increases ordecreases between $0 and $100. Thesmallest change would be a decrease of$0.02, for a lifestyle block on Wallace LoopRoad. No properties would actually havea zero change.
As this stage of the rating review wassimply pre-consultation, council decidedit was best to directly contact thoseratepayers who would face significantincreases in their rates and invite them tomeet with senior Council staff to discussthe proposal.
Several other meetings were held andwith various interest groups invited, including residents and ratepayersassociations, community associations, rural residential and residential
ratepayers groups, iwi groups, andbusinesses.
Since July this year, council has beenmeeting about three times each month toconsider rating options. We haveexplored a range of variations, mainlyland value and capital value hybrids, aswell as differential and target ratechanges.
We can assure ratepayers that nodecisions on the rating review proposalhave been made. Full consultation willhappen next March and April when thepublic can make formal submissions tothe Rating Review proposal in the DraftLong Term Plan.
It will be the outcome of this processnext year that will determine the ratingsystem council will use.

Water race voteI have been heavily involved withinvestigations regarding the HorowhenuaDistrict Council councillors and mayor at apublic meeting in December 2013 voting toclose the Waikawa Water Race.
Incorrect information was provided tothe councillors and mayor by council staff, and largely based on these wrong facts, itwas voted that the Waikawa Water Race beclosed.
Public meeting procedure denied thepublic being allowed to question councilstaff’s information provided after the peoplewho had registered to talk on the topic. Theyhad had their chance to talk.
I am not debating the wrong informa-tion, but am seeking an answer to properprocedure.
During seeking legal advice, I was toldthat it is the responsibility of the public tobring to council’s attention to decisions theymake basically in error, to right a wrong.
Following full investigation of this incor-
rect information, and obtaining proof, wewere advised by Federated Farmers to havethis decision by Council readdressed, due toit being based on incorrect information at aPublic Meeting scheduled for August 2014.
We contacted the person who registersspeaking rights at public Meetings, to havethe Waikawa Water Race added to publicagenda, and was told that the public do notget to choose the topics for discussion.
How can the public get before council anitem added to public agenda for a publicmeeting?
How can the public get Council toreaddress a decision made on incorrectinformation?
Why is a person with speaking rights ona topic not allowed to question facts givenafter they have spoken and just before thecouncillors and mayor vote — in this caseknowing them to be incorrect and illogicaland therefore ensuring council are votingon full disclosure of correct facts?

River accordI am writing in response to theManawatu River Accord article(November 19). They state that they havepresented a progress report to ManawatuRiver Leaders, Ministry forEnvironment and iwi representatives. They then go on to state that people canaccess their website to view the scientificreport. If you go to their website to viewthe so-called “scientific report” you willfind a simple infographic detailing whatwork has been done by various groups inthe last few years, there is no actualscience.
It is reallypleasing to seemany diversegroups working onimproving ourriver, the amountfenced off, etc. Keepup the great workpeople!
But I had to askfor the actualscientific reportsince it is not ontheir website, thereis an obvious reasonit is not readilyavailable on theirwebsite. Section 5.1Trends shows thatalthough nitrateand ammonia levelsare meeting targets(which is great!) thewater clarity, annual E.coli, andbathing E.coli arefailing consistently(almost 100 percent). Also twonutrient tests (DRPand SNI) are failingat a significant rateof 74-81 per cent.
These failuresare across the entireriver catchment andnot targetedtowards anyparticular pointsource discharge. The ManawatuRiver is alsoconsistently failingon a national level:
NRWQN states that the “Manawatu siteshave relatively poor water quality” andthe report goes on to state this is due toour high levels of pastoral farming, towns and factories.
So they are right in saying things aregetting better in some areas, but theyhave cherry picked only the very smallpositives and failed to inform everyone ofthe continuing pollution. It concerns methat organisations like to say everythingis rosy to the people who matter to them, provide simplistic reports showing thework that has been achieved and howgreat it is, state people can access thescientific report easily on their website, then hide the actual scientific reportwhich paints a very different picture tothe reality they have shown us. So the$5.2 million that has been spent so far hasachieved little in regards to water qualityother than stroking a few people’s egos.

SINTERKLAASSinterklaas, also known asDeGoedheiligman (The good holyman), SaintNicolaas, Saint Nicholas or simply as De Sint (The Saint) is celebratedannually on Saint Nicholas' Eve (December 5) in TheNetherlands and on themorning of December 6 in other countries. Originally, the feast celebratesthe nameday of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of children, sailors, philatelists, and the city of Amsterdam. Traditional festivity in TheNetherlands is the feast of Sint Nicolaas or Sinterklaas. It does not replaceChristmas celebrations, but is a part of it. Although the day is celebrated, itis actually a commemoration of the death of Sinterklaas in 340ad.
Foxton’s De Molen Mill iscelebrating a Kiwi/DutchChristmas this year. The bigman in the red suit is coming tovisit. In Dutch tradition,Sinterklaas will be in residenceon December 6 from 10am until4pm. You need not have a Dutchconnection to visit his amazingcave, set up on the first floor ofthe Mill. Hours have gone intotransforming the area.
“Last year it was a hugesuccess,” De Molen ManagerMichael Feyen said. “Whenpeople climb the stairs they’rejust blown away with it.”
The Zwarte Piet (BlackPeter) characters whoaccompany Sinterklaas are partof the annual feast of StNicholas, celebrated on theevening of December 5(Sinterklaasavond, that is, StNicholas' Eve) in theNetherlands, when sweets andpresents are distributed tochildren. Zwarte Piet wouldlisten at the chimney to hearabout the good and badbehaviour.
“I’m sure there is only goodbehaviour in Foxton,” Mr Feyensaid. The costume worn bySinterklaas (Charles Cage) is anauthentic one from theNetherlands.
When Sinterklaas takes hisleave, another man in red shallreturn on December 13 and 20between 10am and 4pm. “Wehave invited Santa Claus thisyear. Celebrating Christmas ina traditional Dutch way, and atraditional Kiwi Christmas aswell.”
Gold coin donations made tovisit the cave, and the special
man, will be used towardsmaintenance of the Mill whichis currently in need of bladerepairs. The only days the Milland the Dutch Market will notbe open is Christmas and NewYear’s Days.

THE Levin School Performing Arts Group was raising smiles and Christmas cheer atrest homes last week with their singing and timbrel playing.
Residents ‘adore’ groupBy TANYAWOOD
The Levin School Performing Arts Groupbrought early Christmas cheer, and even atear to the eye of at least one rest homeresident with their song and timbrelrecital.
In their tinsel haloes, the 12-stronggroup of 10 and 11-year-olds performed a20-minute show, a mix of old-time,Christmas and Maori songs, plusinstrumental timbrel pieces, to seven resthomes, including Te Whanau, over twoweeks.
Te Whanau resident Ngaire Willardsaid as soon as she heard the group’ssinging “wafting up the hall”, she had tocome and watch. “I loved all of it, it broughta tear to my eye.”
Production manager of the PerformingArts Group is Norma Swain, who has beenorganising the annual rest home concertsfor about four years, performing a midyearand Christmas programme with thestudents.
The group practice three days a week intheir lunch hour and Valerie Antonio, thisyear’s group leader, said Norma makesthem work hard.
“Sometimes she growls at us but it’s agood thing. We love Norma.” Valerie saidthey enjoyed coming to the rest homes. “Welike meeting the residents and giving themhugs.”
Norma, 81, has been teaching timbrel inschools since 1961, and been an integralpart of Levin School life since the 1980s. Shesaid she never gets bored or tired. “Everyday is a new day.” She makes no apologyfor “getting tough” at times with herperformers. “They need to make the gradeif they want to stay in the group.”
Te Whanau activities co-ordinatorTracey Stevens said the residents“absolutely adore” the school group.“Norma does such a wonderful job with thechildren and it’s not unusual to have theroom packed out with up to 30 residents atthe performances. It puts a smile on theirfaces.”
Norma is a real asset to the school, according to Levin School principal ColinOfford, volunteering her time to preparethe concerts, rehearse the children andaccompany them to the venues. “Theprogramme allows our students to performa worthwhile community service that theywill remember for years to come,” he said.

In our editorials recently, we have talked about the opportunities of visiting the UK and Europe
with our Earlybird airfare specials and adding on a Trafalgar guided holiday. When we held a
client evening recently, Scott Cleaver, Trafalgar’s New Zealand General Manager was with us
and we experienced up close and personal how amazing one of Trafalgar’s guided holidays
could be.
UK/Europe is a large and competitive area for the traditional “touring” market, so we are
really impressed that Trafalgar has defined themselves as one of the few companies who take
inordinate care to craft holidays and experiences specifically for their customers – so much
so that they actually want to, and do, go on them personally! This was evident from Scott
regaling us with interesting facts and wonderful experiences that he himself enjoyed recently on
a Trafalgar “Secrets of Ireland” holiday and on some of his past European excursions.
Trafalgar is now a market leader in the guided holiday market, with New Zealander’s wanting
to have a holiday experience that will not only be hassle-free and restful, but will leave them
with some of the most special and memorable experiences imaginable. Scott reminded us
that because Trafalgar now has VIP access to most major attractions, you will go to the front
of queues, meaning your valuable holiday hours are completely maximized in doing what you
paid to be there doing!
And for those who think that a guided holiday means lots of “mature” travellers moving sedately
through the country in buses and tour guides dragging you through attractions amid hoards
of other tourists, you couldn’t be more wrong! In fact, the average age of a Trafalgar customer
has dropped by about 10 years over the last 5 years with the majority of travellers falling into
the 45+ brackets. Trafalgar Tours have just announced a satisfaction rate (those that would
recommend Trafalgar to a friend) that hit 99% in 2014! Add this to the fact that 40% of past
Trafalgar travellers have undertaken a second guided holiday with them, you know you are in
good hands.
The very clever way that Trafalgar ensures that all ages, interests and holiday interest are
catered for though, is by offering the option of nine different types of holiday experience which
are clearly defined in their extensive brochure. This puts the selection of your type of holiday
and your expected outcome very much in your hands. Every one of these experiences includes
the 3 Trafalgar essentials; “Insider Experiences” where you meet real locals who share their
history, culture and cuisine with you, “Effortless Travel” because Trafalgar takes care of every
detail of the planning so you get to enjoy yourself fully and “Free Time and Flexibility” so that
you can have more free time if you wish, or include an optional experience within your itinerary.
For example, the “At Leisure” holiday experiences see you staying for 2-6 nights in each visited
destination and departing no earlier than 9am on travelling days, meaning that you have more
time to explore in-depth and at your own pace. The 14-day Amazing Ireland itinerary is an
example of this.
The “Country Explorer” experiences give you the opportunity to spend the entire duration in one
country where you get to meet the locals, share their stories and gain a deeper appreciation
of the people and culture - and one such is the Best of Greece itinerary. Eight days are spent
exploring this fascinating country with the offer of an optional 4-day Aegean Cruise to complete
your classical education.
“Hidden Journeys” are a master-stroke for those wanting to travel in smaller groups of 26 or
less and get up-close-and-personal with sights and destinations where the larger tours just
cannot venture. The Secrets of Italy is a 7-day odyssey that takes you deep into the scenery and
gastronomy of Italy’s Piedmont region, famous for food and wine, and the stunning Aosta Valley
where you will be left speechless by the stunning scenery.
One of our feature tours – Spain, Morocco & Portugal falls into the “Regional Explorer” category
because you explore a region in-depth, and in this case you get to experience the Moorish
influence across these three countries over 16 days. The exotic aspect of this itinerary is
substantial and reading the detailed itinerary, you will be delighted daily by what you see, hear
and experience.
“Special Interest” holidays focus on particular themes or interests, from gardening and culinary
to the battlefields of WW I & II and for those wanting to travel with children or grandchildren,
there are the “Family Experiences” that ensure everyone in the family is happy at the end
of the holiday.
“City Breaks” are at one end of the spectrum and need little explanation, with “Discoveries” at
the other end being the perfect way to explore the diversity of the UK and Europe on one trip.
Varying in length from 2-32 days, you move from one iconic destination to another in comfort
and luxury and allowing you to tick all of the boxes in one go.
You can choose to extend any one of these options with cruising or rail travel, giving you
yet another perspective of the region you are visiting. For example, parts of Switzerland are
best seen (and only visible) by rail, so boarding the luxury Glacier Express that takes you on
an 8-hour journey across 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels or the Oberalp Pass at 2,033
metres above sea level, is going to stick in your mind for a while! Similarly, a 3 or 4-day cruise
mentioned above as part of the “Best of Greece” itinerary will see you gliding through the
eastern Mediterranean to visit such islands as Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes and Heraklion along
with a stop at Kusadasi to visit The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus.
Crafted into every single one of the itineraries in the Trafalgar stable are the “Insider Experiences”
for which they are famous and which range from time with
a Local Specialist who will show and tell you more than you
would ever see or hear travelling alone, to Cultural Insights
that allow you to actually take part or view a very special
activity exclusive to the location you are visiting such as
taking a ‘wee dram’ at a whiskey distillery or sampling
cookies at a 100 year old cookie factory in Switzerland! The
Be My Guest evenings will see you dining with a local family
in their traditional home, eating authentic food and drinking
the local wines while being entertained in a completely
authentic manner.
We would love to help you choose and experience the
Trafalgar style of guided holidays so come in and pick up a
brochure or have a chat as the airfare specials and Trafalgar
savings are still available - but only for a limited time!

HOSPICE MAKES A DIFFERENCEDuring 2013 the 29 hospice servicesthroughout the country provided careand support for more than 15,600 peoplewith a life limiting condition. In 2013hospice staff made more than 152,000visits to people in their homes. Careextends beyond the person who is unwellto include their family, offering supportboth before and after a death.
Irrespective of where a person lives, this philosophy of care does not change
and everything provided is free of charge. As an essential health service provider, hospice receive the majority of fundingfrom Government, but financial supportfrom the community is essential to meetthe shortfall. In 2014 this shortfall is $42million and is being met throughcommunity fundraising includinghospice shops. Hospice has more than11,000 people volunteering more than980,000 hours of their time.

FOOD fun. Levin North School takes theold saying ‘don’t play with your food’ to awhole new level. Studying healthy eatinghelps students make friends with theirfruit and vegetables.
By FRANKIEWEBB
Kids at Levin North School are proud of theeffort they have put into their entry for thenational 5+ A Day School Challenge.
The challenge encourages healthyeating, which includes five or moreservings of fresh fruit and vegetables daily.
The entire roll of 300 at North Schoolbecame totally immersed in the challenge, concluding at their Festival on the Fieldday where they were able to display theirachievements.
Students learnt how to producevegetables from seedlings, to make healthyhomemade lemonade and iceblocks and seedifferent ways fruit and vegetables areused, for example in the cosmetic industry.
“It was more than just learning abouthealthy eating,” organising teacher ClaireMcCallum said.
“Children were allowed to choose whichsubject group they wanted to work in, wehad new entrants working alongside Year6, it was a great way for the students tomeet and work together.”
The children are very grateful to localmarket gardener Nigel Sue (BS Young) inBuller Road who gave them a hands-onexperience at a commercial market garden. At the end of the day the children wenthome with seedlings, strawberries andfresh vegetables. Woodhaven Gardens alsogave the students fresh fruit and vegetablesfor the project.
“I have really enjoyed doing this,” Year6 student Natheer Sos told HorowhenuaChronicle.
“It makes it easier to choose good food ifyou are not by yourself, you have otherkids who are doing it too.”
Natheer moves on to Levin Intermediatenext year.
“I will continue with my healthy eatingchoices, I think it would be great if allschools studied healthy eating.”

Message from the MayorLast monthCouncil soughtfeedback duringpre-consultationon a proposalto change from
a land value to capital value-basedrating system.
The level of interest and debatehas reinforced the value of pre-consultation on the rating review
proposal ahead of the formal DraftLong Term Plan full consultationprocess, even though it was not alegislative requirement.
We received 255 pieces of feedback - apleasing amount - which Council isreviewing and will be reflected in anyrevisions to the current proposal.
Council needs to propose a ratingsystem as part of its Revenue and
Financing Policy for the Draft LongTerm Plan 2015-2025.
Full consultation will happen nextMarch and April when the public canmake formal submissions to the RatingReview proposal in the Draft Long TermPlan. It will be the outcome of thisprocess next year that will determinethe rating system Council will use.

Horowhenua District Council AnnualReport confirms sound financial positionHorowhenua District Council hasended the financial year in a muchstronger position than anticipated.
This is shown in the 2013/2014 AnnualReport, published this week, thatreports back on Council’s commitmentsfor year two of the 2012-22 Ten YearPlan and last year’s Annual Plan.
Chief Executive David Clappertonsays he is proud of the organisation’sachievements, but none more so thanits financial results.
“We have successfully met ourfinancial targets for 2013/2014 andhave ended the year in a muchstronger position than anticipated. Our finances are becoming moresustainable and we are on track todeliver on our commitments.”
Council now has an operating surplusof $745,000, against a budgetedoperating deficit of $528,000.
Mr Clapperton says that Council’ssound financial position has beenachieved through:

“This result for 2013/14 is aculmination of several sound financialdecisions made over the past five tosix years, particularly phasing in fullfunding of depreciation, debt fundingof capital projects for key infrastructureprojects rather than deferring them, and setting appropriate rates revenue,”Mr Clapperton said.
Total overall debt is $56.75 million,well under Council’s self-imposed
debt cap of $77 million, and $11m lower thanbudgeted for the year.
“We have also continuedto increase our savingsthrough a range of measuresthat were introduced in 2013to help Council live within itsmeans,” he said.
“Since 2009 Council has beenspending more than it is earning, and borrowing to pay the difference. Our goal is to address this by balancingthe books. If we continue to stick toour financial plan we will be able toconsistently deliver a balanced booksresult from 2017.”
Mr Clapperton says Council’s prudentand sustainable approach to itsfinances will help continue taking theorganisation “from good to great”.

Bigger, brighter, better dining room the latest at Levin Holiday ParkA bigger, brighter, better dining roomis one of the latest improvements tothe Levin Holiday Park to encouragevisitors to the park and the town.
Since April 2012 the Parker Avenuebased park has been owned andoperated by former school teachersRepi and Debbie Wright.
In addition to raising three childrenunder five-years-old, the couple havebeen steadily giving the site a facelift- and more than just a fresh colourscheme.
The latest major project is a newpurpose-built dining room. Covering100 square metres, with an adjoining30m2 kitchen, the dining room is morethan double the size of the original.
“It’s great - light, bright, airy andspacious,” Repi said.
“And, now when we have group of50 to 60 people they’ll be able to fit
comfortably in a pleasant space. Also, the new kitchen is large enough toaccommodate two groups preparingmeals at the same time.”
Other improvements at the holidaypark include a new barbecue andoutdoor seating area and a newchildrens’ playground. More playequipment to cater for young children
is in the pipeline, as is a giant chequerboard game and native garden area.
“We simply want it to be nice, clean, comfortable and affordable for ourguests, whether they are solo travellersor large school or sports groups,”Debbie said.
“We also want it to be a facility that thecommunity can be proud of.”
Message from the Foxton Community BoardWell this is the lastnote from me thisyear. The silly seasonis almost upon us andit’s that time when wespend-up large again!Speaking of which -
how about buying as many gifts andsupplies locally as you possibly can?Let’s support our local businesses as
much as we’re able! We need them asmuch as they need us!
While the details at the WhirokinoBridges information-day were wellexplained and pictured, I believe weneed to ensure a separate protectedlane is included on both bridges forcyclists and walkers. Foxton needs to bea safe and desired destination for both
activities and the current plans onlyinclude a painted line as the barrierbetween high-speed traffic and walkers/cyclists. You can support this initiativeby emailing NZTA at: [email protected] or phoning on 04 910 8237. Itwill be great to have the new bridgesbut let’s do it once, do it right! Staysafe and look after each other.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY – A NEW MUSICAL COMEDYTHE LEVIN PERFORMING ARTS SOCIETY`SCHRISTMAS PRODUCTION OF THE ADDAMSFAMILY OPENS ON FRIDAY DECEMBER 5TH.“The Addams Family” – A New Musical Comedyfeatures an original story, and it’s every father’snightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princessof darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with asweet, smart young man from a respectable family.Everything will change for the whole family on thefateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents.
Gomez and Morticia are understandably leery.Wednesday is their baby, even if she is eighteen. Theirdoubts bloom into actual terror when they eavesdropon Wednesday, who, in the midst of her afternoonplay-date with Pugsley, refuses to torture her brotherand involuntarily bursts into song - extolling all thingsbright and beautiful as love pulls her in an entirelynew, and cheerful, direction. Like any parents facedwith a child in terrible trouble, Gomez and Morticiawonder, “Where did we go wrong?”
Wednesday Addams, that irresistible bundle of malice, has grown up and found love. So what’s the problem? The young man, Lucas Beineke, is from Ohio, and his
parents are coming to dinner to meet the family. Twodifferent worlds are about to collide. Will love triumph,or will everyone go home vaguely depressed?
Levin Performing Arts is very excited about theearly interest we have received for this show.‘Early Bird’ bookings have been VERY heavy withtwo performances close to ‘sold out’ for mealbookings already.
Levin Performing Arts Society is very privileged tobe hosting this production. Artistic Director ReubenPrice was originally given permission by the NewYork copyright owners to direct the New Zealandpremiere. This Levin production will only be thesecond Society in New Zealand to produce theshow following on from the ‘Sold Out’ season inWellington in June/July. “This is a recent releaseBroadway production requiring huge technical ability.Considering our recent award winning production of“Bonnie and Clyde”, and the blockbuster “The Wizardof OZ”, we believe the Society is in an excellentposition to stage this commercial production toan exceptional standard” said Artistic DirectorReuben Price.

Taking stock of current gardening problems
Diggingin
WALLY RICHARDS
A guava moth caterpillar emerges from a macadamia nut.
The weather has been gardeners’biggest problem to date.
With too great a variation intemperatures, too much wind, insufficient sun or a bit too muchrain, I think this year’s springhas been worse than last year (oris that only because it’s fresherin the mind?).
What I do know is that even inmy glasshouses things are notgrowing as well as they should atthis time of the year, even thoughwe are quickly reaching themaximum amount of daylighthours (December 21). This couldbe due to the number of cloudydays reducing the amount ofdirect sunlight, or some haze inthe atmosphere deflectingsunlight.
I have also noticed that foliageon many plants is a much darker, richer green than I would expectat this time of the year.
Energy from sunlight isabsorbed by proteins calledreaction centres that containgreen chlorophyll pigments. When UV levels reduce, thechlorophyll darkens to a richgreen. Spraying a film over thefoliage that acts as a sun screenwill cause this effect, eg sprayingfoliage with Vaporgard.
The next problem is curly leafin stone fruit. Although the timefor this disease is fairly wellpassed, and the damage done, itwill make a difference to howmuch fruit is harvested. A lot ofdamaged leaves will likely meanno fruit, some damaged leaveswill likely reduce harvestnumbers. The tree will producemore new leaves as the damagedones fall off, and you could spraywith Copper and Raingard toensure undamaged leaves staythat way.
A more pressing problemabout this time is grass grubbeetles. After emerging as abeetle they have about 6-8 weeksof mating, laying eggs and eating.Damage can occur to a number ofplants such as beans, cucumbers, roses, citrus, blueberries andmany other plants. Holes in theleaves are a sign, so if you have
plants that are being eaten, takea torch out after dark and checkfor the brown or bronze beetles.Spray them with Key Pyrethrumand repeat each night untilthey’ve gone. Another method isusing a light trap. Place a troughtwo thirds full of water with alittle kerosene floating on top ofthe water under a window with astrong light that faces onto thearea where the beetles are doingthe damage.
Beetles are attracted to thelight, hit their head on the glass, fall into the trough, and the
kerosene prevents themclimbing out. Flush them downthe toilet or feed them to thechooks.
Codlin moth is another pestaround at the moment, attackingapples, leaving grubs to eat intothe fruit where they grow andmature. A spray of Neem TreeOil over the apples will prevententry, and use with Raingard, repeating about every 10 days tillthe new year. If you have nottaken some action already, youwill likely have a number ofdamaged apples.
The guava moth is a similarpest but one that damages a largerange of fruit, which means theycan operate all year round. Iwould suggest spraying NeemTree Oil, used with Raingard, and repeat every seven to 10days.
Porina caterpillars are activeall year round in lawns and otherareas. The caterpillar comes upout of the soil to feed at nightcausing bare patches. Cut thelawn and spray the base of thegrass where they feed with NeemTree Oil. Repeat about everythree months in areas wherethey are an ongoing problem.
Shield beetles, leaf hoppers, whitefly and psyllids are alsobest controlled by a mixture ofNeem Tree Oil and KeyPyrethrum sprayed late in theday when the sun is off the plantsand the pests have settled for theevening. Not only will you needto repeat spray target plants butalso check all plants in the areafor signs of re-infestation.

BE SUNSMART
THIS SUMMERMost New Zealanders have heard of the Slip, Slop,Slap and Wrap campaign promoted during the summermonths, yet this country still has the highest skincancer rates in the world. Each year, over 350 peopledie from skin cancer and 67,000 new skin cancer casesare diagnosed. Children are particularly at risk withsevere sunburn doubling a child’s risk of melanomalater in lifeOur high rate of skin cancer and melanoma in particular,is disturbing, especially as most is preventable.
SO WHAT CAN WE DO?• Everyone needs to use sun protection when the UV
Index reaches 3 or above; so that means a sunhat, sunscreen, protective clothing, shade and sunglasses.
• Limit time in the sun, especially between 10am-4pm• Use shade wisely: seek shade when UV rays are most
intense• Note changes in your skin, anywhere on your skin,
and watch for new or changing freckles or moles.Consult a doctor immediately if a freckle or mole isgrowing larger or changing in shape or colour.
• Winchester House have umbrellas and sunscreendispensers to loan to schools and community groups

"Hearing loss is a normalpart of aging and nothingcan be done" Hearing lossis not normal at any agebut more people (about65% of people over 65)have a hearing loss. A fewhearing losses can be fixedby surgery, however mostcan't and need hearingaids or other listeningdevices like amplifiedtelephones or Bluetoothdevices for the phone or TV.
"My hearing loss is not badenough to do anything"How a hearing lossaffects people depends ontheir circumstances. Forexample, a person lookingafter someone who isunwell will need to hear
any sound they make.Untreated hearing loss canbe associated with stress, fatigue, depression, andanxiety. Long term there isdecreased understandingof speech by the brain. There is also increasingevidence that untreatedhearing loss increasesthe chance of developingdementia.

WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS IS ALL IN THE MIND
Fed up with being one ofmany others who haveexperienced yo-yo dieting,
losing all the weight then whenthe diet is over putting it all andmore back on?
Achieve long term success, easily, safely and naturally. This4 session program enables youto eat what you like, no diets ordepriving yourself.
Get back in touch with whatyour body wants, not what yourhead thinks or what societytells you.
The ‘Virtual’ Gastric Bandis a remarkable weight lossprogramme which utilises theconcept of a “virtual” gastricband and clinical hypnotherapy. It successfully harnesses thepower that every individualholds within them to makechanges to their lives.
Jenny from All About YouHypnotherapy is a Certified‘Virtual’ Gastric Bandconsultant (1/10 in NZ)and uses this non-surgicaltechnique, using the power ofhypnosis to assist you to besatisfied with smaller amountsof food. This program changes how youthink about food and gives verysafe, very predictable results. The clinical hypnotherapyconvinces the brain that thestomach is full after a certainlevel of intake, and that there isno need for more food.It is most definitely NOT a diet- we know that diets only workin the short term. The ‘Virtual’Gastric Band allows you to eatwhat you want, but will enableyou to intake smaller portions. And, because it’s not a diet, youwon’t feel deprived, miserable
or hungry, the issues whichcause diets to fail. As The‘Virtual’ Gastric Band effectivelynegates these issues, you areleft with a long term solutionto your weight problems. Wework with the root causes ofover eating such as boredom, loneliness, low self-esteemand other negative habits andbeliefs.
The positive benefits of usingthis program can include bettersleeping, improvement todiabetes, increased motivation,self-confidence and quality oflife, personal, social and worklife and so much more. Youknow that diets don’t work!To find out more or to bookyour place call Jenny now0800 344 9713.

■ BOWLSRSA Bowls:The RSA Bowls Ladies Triples final was played in difficult conditions, with very strong winds and light showers, between two very strongteams. The team of Heather Pratt, Jean McLeese, Shirley Viggars wasan experienced trio, with skip Heather Pratt already the holder of 13 clubchampionships. Lois Knox took two juniors, Ngaire Fluerty and HeatherCorbett, as her team. It was soon apparent that experience counts, asPratt’s team pulled away to lead by 11 points to nil. Knox’s teamchipped away to get back 2 down, 15-13 with the final end to play.Fluerty and Knox drew one shot each to hold a drawn game but Prattwith her last bowl managed to tap one of Knox’s shot bowls to push itout of the count, winning the title 15-14.Heather Pratt got her 14th club title but was gracious in her praise of thejunior players for their determined attempt in tough bowling conditions.Final results Triples Champion winners - Heather Pratt, Jean McLeese,Shirley Viggars. Runners-up - Lois Knox, Heather Corbett, NgaireFluerty.

Foxton proved a popularvenue for the WellingtonHorowhenua showjumpingchampionships at theweekend.
Entries in most classeswere large with local ridersclaiming many spoils.Horowhenua showjumpriders had already showngood form at Egmont andTaranaki Shows in the weeksleading up to the local event.
Levin rider ShanaeMcKay, 15, is having a superseason, finishing in themoney at both Taranakievents and reserving the bestfor the home crowd. In thePony Grand Prix, McKaylined up in third place atEgmont A & P Show ridingGuthrie, behind Waikatocombination Jamie Jeffersonand Envious Edition 1, andAuckland’s Maddison Bult onMr Black Magic.
Upping her game later inthe week at the TaranakiJumping Show, McKay camehome in second place onGuthrie and third on Kabo SoFar.
Determined not to be thebridesmaid at Foxton, McKayand Guthrie won the classwhich attracted 16 starters.Only five made it through tothe jump-off but McKay wasway too good, flying home 10seconds ahead of second-placed Tom Moffett (Hastings)aboard Tane Mahuta. She wasalso fourth on her pony KaboSo Far.
Sister Kaylah McKayfinished a credible fourth inthe Young Rider Series
aboard Rosie Posie atTaranaki and fellowHorowhenua rider DianaCottle rode Morpheus Risinginto sixth in the CaledonianAmateur Rider Series, goingone better at Foxton finishingfifth.
Opiki combination LucyAkers and Tinapai just missedtaking out the Country TVHorse Grand Prix at theWellington HorowhenuaShowjumping Champs. Theclass attracted a field of 16combinations cut to seven forthe jump-off. Akers was last togo in the jump-off and unluckynot to win, with points of a
