HomeworkHomework

The primary purpose of homework is to reinforce the information and skills learned at school.

Homework Can grow time consuming for both parent & child.

Develop strategies to complete assignments in a stress-free and learning friendly manner.

It is important for parents and children to find a plan that works and stick with it.

Use ChecklistsUse Checklists

Help your child get into the habit of using checklists for keeping track of homework assignments.

A small pad or notebook could be dedicated to listing homework assignments. Once assignments have been completed, crossing off items will foster a sense of accomplishment.

Some children may prefer to use a calendar or even a personal digital assistant (PDA) to keep track of due dates and to help organize assignments.

PrioritizePrioritize

Before beginning assignments, encourage your child to number the assignments in the order in which they are to be completed. Some children prefer to start with work not too long or difficult.

Sometimes leave the easy things for last

Set realistic goals and stop along the way to check progress.

A timer may be a helpful tool!

Designated Study SpaceDesignated Study Space

Typically, children find it helpful to study in the same place every night where materials are close at hand. (This also diminishes the chances for any “lost” items!)

It does not have to be the bedroom. A well-lit place with few distractions will be just fine.

No television on. If music is requested, be sure it does not cause a distraction.

Designated Study TimeDesignated Study Time

Keep a specific time each day reserved for studying and homework.

The best time is NOT usually right after school as most children need to unwind at first.

Include your child when making and deciding what time is best for the Study Time.

Even if there is no homework, studying or review can be done at this time. S/he can review the teachers’ websites...or read for pleasure...or begin/continue a portion of an upcoming school project.

Ask about the subject and the work accomplished.

Try to relate homework to everyday life. For example, fractions and measurements can be reviewed as a meal is prepared.
