A behind-the-scenes look at the quick cleanupAll right, I admit it. I tend to let
housework slide. I mean, life’s too short, right? I would much rather go to a movie or on an outing with my husband and kids than stay home and fold laundry.
Unfortunately, this live-life-to-the-fullest mentality can result in my house looking as if it’s been ransacked. And it certainly doesn’t help that my family seems to have adopted the philosophy that being eco-friendly includes saving the energy it takes to put things away or do any kind of chores around the house whatsoever.
One thing I do enjoy as a homeowner, however, is entertaining. I love having a group of friends and family over for a meal, or drinks and snacks, while the kids run around the house, adding to the mayhem that seems to be the chosen décor of my surroundings.
So, how do I manage to somehow get my house together and somewhat presentable when company is coming? Here’s a few tips I can share:
1. Prioritize the cleanup.I always make sure my entryway is clean, with room for guests
to hang their jackets and leave their shoes. I also make sure the bathroom is spotless and the usual gathering spots are clean. I have a second floor that typically guests do not see, so that floor will get the least amount of cleaning before a get together.
2. Make it countGetting back to the “life’s too short” statement I made earlier, I
make sure that the time I do spend cleaning makes sense for the gathering I’m hosting.
If you are having an outdoor soiree, make sure the yard is trimmed and weeded, the patio is organized and essential areas of the house, such as the bathroom and the rooms guests need to
walk through in order to reach the backyard, are clean. If you are hosting people inside the home, think of where they
will be gathering. Is that area cluttered beyond belief? Put some muscle into sorting the mess out, then polish, vacuum and pretty-up the area.
If you don’t have the time to do this because it is an impromptu get-together, simply shift the clutter into another area of the house that will not be accessed by your guests.
3. Have a convenient setupIf you are serving wine and beer as well as non-alcoholic
drinks, set up a table with wine bottles, glasses and an opener for ease of serving and less fuss. Put beer in a cooler or large container filled with ice and keep it separate from soft drinks by putting them in a different cooler. This way, guests do not have to go into your refrigerator to get their choice of beverage.
Setting up stations for snacks, plates and utensils will help to keep your party’s setting orderly as well.
Have a bin set up for recyclables and a separate bin for garbage, in order to have some of the cleanup occur during the party.
4. Use creative lightingCandles are a great way to not only set the mood for your party,
but to encase your messy home in a warm, welcoming glow. Use lower-wattage light bulbs in your fixtures; too-bright lights are hard on guests eyes, can spoil the mood and, worst of all, can help highlight any areas that were only spot cleaned prior to the guests’ arrival.
So, now that I’ve given up my secrets to the quick clean-up, try using them yourself, and you too can prepare for guests in just minutes.

It’s that time of year again...
SPRING 2013 Home & Garden 7
Easy come…easy go
Whether it’s called the mudroom, back porch, entry hall, or garage, the primary entrance for the family is the first place things are dropped and the last place things are picked up. Everything from keys to groceries, sports equipment to umbrellas, mail, laundry, shoes, coats and pet supplies are found here. Creating a place that keeps all this under control is becoming a primary concern for homeowners throughout the country, no matter what the climate. Fortunately for homeowners, huge improvements can be made without the high cost of a substantial remodel project.
Minimal construction can make a maximum difference. A partial wall or divider can establish a compact anteroom while controlling the clutter with handy storage and seating space. Built-ins maximize space and can include kid-friendly cubbies and baskets to stow gloves, scarves, hats and sports equipment; hooks for keys, book bags and outerwear; and specialized shelves for storing wet and muddy boots and sneakers.
For those blessed with abundant space, the primary entry can become a multi-functional great room, serving as “home central” for clothing care needs, hobby and office space, pet shelter and mudroom.
A wide variety of surfaces are available that withstand abuse from kids, pets or frequent traffic, yet add beauty and style to the home. No matter how large or small your space is, the essentials are:
Hardy wall coverings, such as wood bead board, vinyl wallpaper, or washable latex paint
Tile, vinyl or laminate flooring for easy clean-up (a woven rug adds a splash of color and catches soil).
Can or track lighting, a pendant light or a glass-panel door to ensure a welcome and safe entry day or night.
Melamine laminate shelving for easy to clean, water-resistant storage; it is available in attractive solid colors and wood-grain finishes.
Practical, multipurpose furnishings--inexpensive freestanding bins and shelves can work, but built-ins look neater, last longer, and are customized for maximum functionality.
Consider how each family member will use the space, and assign areas accordingly: give
young children the lower bins, and hanging areas; adolescents and adults can reach higher shelving, baskets and hanging. Don’t forget the pets – or the space above your head.
The primary entrance to a house is the first place things are dropped and the last place things are picked up.

Gardening tips for beginners Gardening is a rewarding hobby that many enthusiasts credit with
helping them to peacefully escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Though gardening can be both relaxing and rewarding, it’s not as easy as it may seem, and the more time and effort a person devotes to his or her garden the more likely it is to be successful.
Gardening can be a little daunting for beginners who have little or no experience planting flowers or vegetables. But gardening need not be so intimidating, especially for those beginners who adhere to the following tips aimed at helping novice gardeners start their gardens off on the right foot.Determine what you should plant.
Where you live will go a long way toward determining what you should plant. While you can plant anything you can get your hands on, the United States Department of Agriculture has determined specific plant hardiness zones that indicate which plants are most likely to thrive in given locations. A map of these zones can be found at usda.gov. When in doubt about what to plant, consult a local gardening center or seek advice from a professional landscaper.Think location when beginning your garden.
When choosing a spot, consider how much sunlight a location gets on a daily basis and the spot’s proximity to a water supply. If planting flowers, try to avoid planting in areas with heavy foot traffic so the flowers are less likely to be stomped. If you’re planting flowers to accent walkways, then consider erecting a barrier around the flower bed to safeguard the flowers from foot traffic.
Get started before you plant. Preparing the soil a few weeks before you start planting can help
the plants thrive down the road. Add some organic material, such as compost or fertilizer, to the soil roughly three weeks before planting. This helps the soil retain water and nutrients, which will help your garden thrive.Time your planting.
When you plant is sometimes as important as what you plant. When buying seeds, the packaging might suggest what time of year to plant the seeds. Adhere to these suggestions or your garden might not grow much at all. Don’t forget to mulch.
Mulch can be as aesthetically appealing as it is effective. Mulch retains soil, helping roots to grow stronger, while deterring bugs and preventing weed growth. And many gardeners find mulch adds visual appeal their garden, and does so in a very inexpensive way.Clean your tools.
Beginners rarely recognize the importance of cleaning gardening tools before putting them away. At the end of each gardening session, clean your tools thoroughly, as soil left on your garden tools can play host to potentially harmful microbes that might kill your plants.

Quick garden tricks
Melon trickKeep your melons from
rotting as they ripen by placing a flat stone (or concrete) beneath the fruit.
Here are some fun tricks for making your garden grow:
Keep it cleanIf you enjoy gardening
but want to avoid grimy fingernails, scrape them over a wet cake of soap before beginning to work. This will keep the dirt out and the soap will easily rinse out afterwards.
Dig itMoisten the ground a few
hours before you start digging and the job will be easier.
Bug be goneYou can combat aphids, spiders
and other pests by steeping onion or garlic skins and peels in water then using as a spray.
Use fabricLandscape fabrics are used to prevent weed growth while still
allowing air, oxygen and water to flow to and from the soil. Once put down, landscape fabric can be covered with mulch to add aesthetic appeal.
Bloom basicsPlant bulbs in layers for weeks of
blooms (choose varieties that flower a few weeks apart).
Stop mildewBaking soda can control powdery mildew on plants. Weekly
spraying of a mixture of one tablespoon of baking soda, ½ teaspoon of liquid soap and one gallon of water during humid or damp weather can greatly reduce powdery mildew in your garden. .
