Is spring the beginning of warm or the end
of cold? The expression of life cycles is
principally based on our own perceptions.
If there is a season for birth (spring),
expression (summer), reflections (fall),
and death (winter), then do we create cycles
or seasons for our own life experiences?
In this bimonthly issue, we asked our authors to express their
perspectives about Life Cycles and how consciousness can be
used to enhance appreciation and gratitude for each cycle.
Perhaps a message of Life Cycles is everything that has a
beginning must also end. Great avatars understand that new
beginnings are fueled from the wisdom of closing and create
the great adventure of life.

Lil’s CornerBy Lillian F. Bernhagen, R.N., M.A., H.C.
G O L D F I N C H E S
I watch them through my windowpane,
They never seem to mind the rain,
Their little heads bob cautiously,
While pecking seeds religiously
From holes bored into feeders round
Hung safely high above the ground.
And now the rain has turned to snow,
With great huge flakes, they’re quite a show,
‘Though most the birds have fled the storm,
To seek the trees to keep them warm,
Two tiny ones were not so blest,
Their pecking order, not the best
To warrant feeding with the rest,
Have stayed behind, have braved the chill,
That they, in peace, might eat their fill.
The storm has passed, the feeders show
That thistle seed is very low;
It does require a lot of feed
To meet these tiny finches need,
They’ll soon be back to look for more,
‘Cause feeding time is half past four.
God, why is it that I feel so bad?
Why is it that my heart’s so sad
To know a tiny momma wren
Will surely not return again
To lay her eggs into the nest
That she, with care, had done her best,
To make it deep, and safe and warm,
To nurture future babes from harm.
Today her mate sat on my post,
And gave his morning song its most
Enticing, loving, caring call,
But there was no response at all,
The air hung silent without song,
No echo from the nest, what’s wrong?
What’s happened to his precious mate?
What quirk of nature was her fate?
And so, I hurt, no peace I find,
While pondering, “what’s in God’s mind
To rob this creature, oh so small,
Of chance to hear her mating call?”
Time and again, he comes and pleads,
But there’s no answer to his needs,
And so, he sadly wings away.
I pray he’ll mate another day.

ne of the characteristics of Celtic Spirituality is
that of "peregrination", or pilgrimage. It speaks
of the continuous journey of life. Journies differ
from trips in that they are open to detours, sur-
prises, and delights that challenge the one making the journey.
Many airplane travelers become disgruntled because they plan a
trip and receive a "journey". A journey can be as short as from
your car to visit a dying loved one. A journey can be moving to
a new location, taking up a new ministry or job, or dealing with
one's own physical illness or diminishment.
The journey explores the connection between everyday
reality and the spirit realm. It asks the question: "What is life
teaching me at this moment?" The idea of journey is basic to
humanity and is found in the themes of "the quest" like the
Odyssey, the Holy Grail, Exodus , and wanderings. Journies
are undertaken because of the inner promptings of the heart,
not on outer directions. Those who truly journey are ready
to go wherever the Spirit might take them. They see themselves
as "guests of the universe".
Journies have no specific goals except that of the interior
journey seeking the "place of resurrection", the resurrected self,
the true self in Christ which is for all journeyers their true home.
The spiritual life has always been that of continual conversion,
never-ending transformation of the old into the new.
I have been on a so-called pilgrimage with a group and it
did have its own rewards. But the "peregrinatio", in which
I truly grew, was the one I took by myself with only a few
belongings and traveled to Stonehenge, Iona, Findhorn, Dublin,
Kildare and, as close as I could get, to Skellig Michael. I met
those I had previously contacted along the way and thus always
had a place to sleep, even though I sometimes arrived later than
expected. Several times I had to ask for help and always received
gracious assistance. It was truly an exercise in trust in the Angels
of Divine protection.
The difference between the two "pilgrimages" was enormous.
The group experience seemed "canned" in contrast to my daily
enfolding religious experience of "going with the flow". This is
how the Celtic understanding of "peregrinatio" differs from that
of other pilgrimages. Sometimes it is called "green martyrdom"
as it leaves a known homeland to experience that, here, we do
not have a lasting city. As the Irish Folk Lyric says: "When the
leaving's over...the leaving's just begun." It is a challenge that I
take up daily: to travel with a light heart into the unknown.
The end of the road is the end of our life.

Four QuartetsTime present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future.
And time future contained in time past.
Time past and time future
what might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.
The dance along the artery
The circulation of the lymph
Are figured in the drift of stars
At the still point of the turning world.
Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards;
at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement.
And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered.
Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline.
Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.
I can only say, there we have been;
but I cannot say where.
And I cannot say, how long,
for that is to place it in time.
Time past and time future.
Allow but a little consciousness.
To be conscious is not to be in time.

love fishing. This love has been instilled in me by my
father who introduced me to the outdoors. Since I can
remember, my Dad took me hunting and fishing and
camping. One of my favorite fishing experiences is in
the open ocean. Fishing in the ocean requires a more
unique aspect in planning the trip than fishing in fresh water
ponds, lakes and rivers. In ocean fishing we have to consider
the cycle of the tides. High and low tides significantly affect
fishing conditions such as when to launch and land the boat
and fish eating behaviors which are strongly tied to the ebb
and flow of the ocean. Even the daily cycle of the tide is
subject to an annual cycle.
The natural world demonstrates cycles in numbers of
ways; ocean waves are examples of fluid cycles and human
physiology demonstrates cyclic dynamics. The cycle of sleep
and awake for instance, or the heart beat itself. The study of
Chronobiology investigates the cyclic phenomenon of living
organisms such as Circadian Rhythms which are regulated by
a small, yet highly influential bundle of nerves in the brain
called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). The SCN consists
of only about 10,000 of the billions of cells that make up our
brain. It doesn’t take a large leap of faith to realize that cycles
are a fundamental aspect of our existence. This conclusion
leads to the question - “How well are you ‘cycling’?”
The Tide Ebbs and FlowsBy Greg Mack, CES, MATCs, RTSm

11
The hypothalamus, sometimes referred to as the “master
gland,” due to its profound and systemic influence on human
physiological functions, controls the SCN. An interesting feature
of the SCN and its imposition of circadian rhythm is that it is
entrained by light which is coordinated by the pineal gland.
This realization has led to the belief that many who suffer from
seasonal depression syndrome do so because of the lack of strong
cycle in light and dark periods over the course of a 24 hour day.
So again, “How well are you ‘cycling’?”
Research in cardio-respiratory function is indicating
that instead of training aerobically at a fixed heart rate level,
training intensities should vary in a way that the heart rate
response is cycled over time. For example, even to the point
of maximally raising the heart rate, then allowing complete
recovery to resting levels, and then immediately raising the
heart rate again followed by another period of complete
recovery. Weight training has been shown to be most effective
when a progressive increase in resistance or volume is applied
over the course of a few weeks followed by rest, then repeating
the process again. We call these micro, meso and macro cycles.
The research in identifying risk factors for morbidity
includes heart rate responses that are relatively flat over time.
A heart that cannot make large excursions from high rates
to low rates possibly indicates the presence of disease. In
fact, individuals with known pathologies in a variety of
physiological systems consistently show a relatively flat heart
rate response over time.
So what can we do if we feel we are not good at cycling?
START CYCLING!
Any number of external environmental stimulus’ can
generate a physiological cycle, or excursion, along a
continuum of high and low. Try it with your aerobic exercise,
when showering cycle the hot and cold water a few times, go
through caloric periods of high and low intake. Be creative.
Of course, I strongly recommend starting with low to
moderate excursions before building up to larger ones.
I do not suggest going from a super hot dry sauna and
immediately jumping into freezing water. Like any activity
we must gradually but systematically increase the demands
of the extremes of a physiologic excursion. Always consult
your personal medical professional to ensure that you do
not have a condition that would need to be addressed as
part of any physiologic excursion/cycle.
Let your lifestyle operate like the tides in the great oceans — with ebb and flow.

olistic people attempt to hold the meaning of
the present moment through the experience of
meditation, stillness, and silence. Other insights
to the meaning of our existence can be observed through the
cycles of our life as experienced through our past and invited
from our future life.
Our first challenge is to recall our past because our ego is
defended and wants to isolate shaming or fearful memories
with denial, apathy, and indifference. The cycles of our past
life are interrupted and we simply freeze our emotional
development when we are exposed to an overwhelming
drama. Many people still act out the emotional behavior of
an age when they were paralyzed with fear or shame because
they cannot recall that part of their life. We cannot heal what
we don’t feel and if there are cycles of your life you cannot
recall, you remain childish about your perceptions of self
and others. Many therapies include a strong objective of
reconnecting our past memories, emotions, and body
sensations so we can complete the cycles of our past that
otherwise must be duplicated in the future.
Connecting to Our Past and Future Wisdom Cycle

When we attempt to heal the traumas of our past, the
human ego parts become defended and create a hermetic seal
to prevent an external source from changing the beliefs of
shame or fear. Many coaches choose to use rituals other than
cognitive behavior change to invite a transformation of belief
beyond the control mechanism of the human ego. These
rituals can include Hypnosis, Neuro-Linguistic Programming,
Metaphor Healing, Gestalt, Mind and Body energy work,
intuition, and imagination. A Holistic Coach™ embraces the
cycles of growth to locate stuck energy of the Child ego, the
Mother ego, the Father ego, and finally the Adult ego. Our
emotional maturity evolves as we teach these ego parts to
forgive their distorted perceptions of each other from the past.
If Albert Einstein was right about the human ego
perceiving the illusion of time, then the reality outside our
perceptions is the simultaneous expression of our past,
present, and future cycles. Is it possible to ask our future self
to offer wisdom to our existing self in the same way we ask
our existing self to heal our past self? This powerful healing
ritual bows to the past for its sacrifices and invites our future
self to bow to our existing self for the great wisdom learned
from the light and shadow side of life. As Holistic practitioners,
we invite clients to imagine themselves positioned at a future
age in which they have great insights and forgiveness of self
as a result of the current life challenges. This process completes
the existing cycle and gives a deeper and more profound
realization of life events and why they were necessary.
Since the human ego is fixated in the illusion of time,
the Holistic Coach™ uses the unlimited power of timelessness
to allow the client to view the timeline of the ego in order to
understand the purpose of every sacred intersection. Once
we teach the human ego this self-healing process, it adapts
quickly and begins to process all of its emotional blocks of
the past, present, and future. Although this experience is
difficult to express in the spoken or written word, clients find
immediate freedom from self judgment and criticism of the
past, and fear of the future.
Let’s invite you to experience this ritual of healing.
Begin with recalling a traumatic experience, possibly from early
childhood. Notice how the energy signature of that trauma
continues to reappear in cycles along your path of life until
this present moment. Sometimes this cycle repeats a few times
and often it repeats many times. An example might include
painful experiences in your first marriage that seem to repeat
themselves in your second or third marriage. Until the existing
self is able to recover the memory of shame and fear from the
initial trauma, the ego will stay locked in those hidden beliefs.
While the Lower Self stays frozen there, the paradox is that the
Higher Self uses the repeated cycles as an opportunity for
self-realization and enlightenment. We can also examine our
existing beliefs of self sabotage and ask our future self why this
painful experience was necessary, and in what way the future
self has insights and enlightenment from that experience.
Simply said, peace in the human mind can be found
through realizing the purpose of our past, present, and future
cycles and how there was purpose to every event. If you
attempt to heal your mind and body with the same beliefs
that created pain, suffering, and disease, then you are
doomed to repeat the cycle over and over. With this new
ritual of healing that requires us to observe ourselves from
a different perspective, the human ego eagerly seeks resolve
and acceptance of the purpose of our life.

ycles orbit around and through our lives like
moons orbit around Jupiter, or satellites
around our own planet. It all depends upon
where we focus our periscope. These cyclic
movements exist on the microscopic level, in the form of
daily rituals and the order of time which we impose on our
lives. Can your day begin without coffee, or reading the paper
or whatever repeating pattern you use to welcome the day?
They also exist on the macrocosmic level like the cycles of the
moon and the spiraling nature of our own galaxy. And as we
watch our lives in motion, those cycles occur at all speeds,
orbits, and directions. While Nature may abhor a vacuum,
very little is in complete stillness and nearly everything shows
movement in a forward, cycling motion.
On our planet, we live the changing seasons and feel
them in the rhythm of our lives. They are the backdrop for
the rest of the motion that is who and what we are. The
ancient Druids knew that there was a pattern for each life,
and your pattern was specific to you and your journey.
Once the wise of a community could discern your pattern,
life made more sense. The ancient Maya also knew this and
expressed their understanding of the stars in the creation
of their calendar. The cycles of the calendar combined a
numeric value from one to thirteen with a personality type
embodied in a symbol. That combination became a part of
your name so that everyone, including you, knew what your
path was in life. Interestingly enough, that system offers an
accurate description of temperament for those of us who live
in this century and in this culture.
There is a pattern to our journey that is expressed in our
choices and in our interests. I feel the seasons of the Earth
as a foundational part of that pattern and an ever present
reminder that I must care for Her lovingly, as she has provid-
ed me life. Around and through that foundation are the cycli-
cal movements of my life choices. Some of the choices I made
early in life are clearly evident in my life today, some are not.
I find that interests I had early in life are still things that
command my attention and passion. As I watch the thread
of those interests weave back through my history, I see topics
I was intensely passionate about that I set aside for other
people. I buried parts of myself to better fit in with family,
friends and loved ones, and as I turn my periscope in that
direction, I see that those passions are still with me and
have become an important part of my life.
CPatterns in Motion

An early career interest was psychology and human
emotions. Communication of emotions was not encouraged
and I buried both the interest and the emotions through
family life and a marriage until their expression
became critical to saving my life. Then, I could
begin to see that thread as it has stayed
at my side through all those years.
Another interest keenly felt as a
child was a connection to the spiritual
and the mystical. Because I wanted to
fit in and be accepted, I set those aside
as well. Today those two interests have
become a soul urge for self education,
and to educate others. These cycles
have sustained me, even during those
periods of my life when I worked to
suppress parts of me. Ignoring who we
have been, and who it has made us today, is
as dangerous to our growth as staying stuck in

What were the things that interested you as a child, or as
a teenager? Is there still a spark of curiosity or passion about
that topic? Did you get stuck somewhere, or did you leave
a part of you behind, or has it fueled the fires of your life?
My husband got a ham radio operator’s license at the
youngest age possible. That passion for electronics fueled
career choices over four decades and survives today in an
interest in computers and telecommunications.
We are multidimensional, both through time and space.
Our passions and interests are the threads of the kind of
human being we were, are, and will become. I can watch those
threads through my life flow into the pattern and tapestry
that is me – the design may not always be symmetrical or
attractive, but it is the picture of who I am. We have
access to all parts of our life, past, present and
future, and can change our perspective of
the how the view looks through our
periscope. We can bring those things
from the past if we wish, and apply
the interest or wisdom gained, to
enrich our life today.
Through the tenacity of historians,
archaeologists, and scholars, we
have access to the wisdom of
Ancient High Cultures like Egypt,
Sumer, New Grange, the Mayans and
others. We have lived through the global
cycling of the seasons, cultural cycling that
ranges from fashion to ideas that come around
again and again, and our own individual cycles of growth
and change. The benefit we have is, that as the world
becomes a smaller place, we can choose what good we wish
to draw into our lives from as local as our own life history
to as global as the wisdom of the ancients. With those
choices we bring much richness to life and I wish you joy
in that journey.

ricycles, bicycles, motorcycles and life cycles all
have much in common throughout a life time.
We begin with trainer wheels on our tricycles so
that we do not tip and fall off, skin our knees and
noses. Bicycles are a bit trickier because it usually requires a
caring competent person to run alongside of us until we are
going fast enough to keep our balance. But we do crash, get
up, brush the dirt off our jeans and elbows, even cry a hurt
tear or two and then get back on until we master it.
As soon as we come of age (AH HA, whatever that
means), life has reached the motorcycle stage. This stage
requires a license to ride one, but long before that, we have
been practicing either building a motorcycle or fixing one
and eagerly learning how to ride it. We no longer need
training wheels, we know how to keep our balance on two
wheels, and the challenge now is the powerful motor of the
motorcycle. If we are wise we wear leathers, a shatter proof
helmet and boots because there is the feeling
of daring to be powerful. The mishaps
with a motorcycle are more
about a life and death
challenge but when
we are young
we are undaunted. We can do it; look out world! Our place
in society and persona is labeled. Own a Harley Davidson,
Honda, Suzuki…the arguments begin by who owns what
and where you fit in that life style.
Life cycles are similar and often have the same kind
of challenges. In the beginning, our training wheels are
hopefully, competent, loving adults who care whether we fall
and skin our knees and, if we do, they kiss it and make it well
with their encouragement. For the first six years of our lives
we are imprinted with concepts and beliefs that follow us all
the rest of our lives. Those years are the tricycle and bicycle
years. Part of getting older is to recognize which beliefs and
concepts are true for us, then, when we understand that, we
come to the recognition we are 100% responsible for our
lives. Blame, shame and guilt have to go out the door if we
are to find our balance and purpose, and for our life cycle to
be full of adventure, joy, happiness and people who under
stand and want the same things for us.
There you will find yourself in the
motorcycle stage of life. Oh, the
power of that realization
and acceptance of
that power.

We all come from a perfect, loving
and cosmic creative energy. We choose
to make the choices that create a life
we want to live, find purpose in, and
live to its maximum. We choose our
parents and they give us birth, but it is
up to us to choose the kind of life we
want to live. At this particular time in
our lives, we have a greater opportunity
to live wise, successful, joyful, abundant
lives. Everything is at our finger tips if
we choose to see it and explore it.
The gifts of researchers and
creative men and women have brought
to us television, computers, jet power,
flight, motorized vehicles of every kind
to do every job that needs to be
accomplished. Of course, there is the
opposite side to all of that also. There
is war, chaos, death, dying, disease,
stress, hate, discontent but we get to
choose what we want to participate in.
Even when choices other people make
that affect us takes us to the dark side
of life, we have the power to choose
what to do with it to make life for
ourselves and others come into
alignment with the Higher Purpose.
Is there anyone reading this story
that has not seen the movie The Secret
or seen it discussed on Oprah’s show?
Oprah has said that in her sixteen years of hosting her show
nothing has equaled the response this movie has had. The
secret is no longer a secret. It is THE LAW OF ATTRACTION.
“Our thoughts become things” Mike Dooley says. I quote
Michael Beckwith, “One thing I know for sure there is more
than enough for everyone.” Jack Canfield says, “If a boy like
me who grew up in West Virginia, came from a dysfunctional
family, was a part of the High School graduating class that
made the top half possible, and now I am a multimillionaire.
If I can do it, anyone can.”
There are principles of success easy enough to learn
and follow. When we understand how the Law of Attraction
works, we take charge of our thoughts, being clear about what
it is we do NOT want, writing them
down and then opposite each one
write what we DO want. It becomes
a life plan, subject to change as we
learn and are presented with more
information that works in our favor.
We have to come to the place in our
believing, thinking, wanting and
needing which brings our attention to
asking for, and taking action on, that
which shows up closer to our BIG
dreams. Daring to dream big does not
take any more energy than dreaming
small. Sometimes, when we let go
of being practical, it opens us up to
accepting the highest good to appearing
our lives. The benefit of this is, when
we get it, it also enhances the lives of
everyone around us. Every good thing
that happens to an individual also is
healing someone, somewhere in
another part of our world.
When you adopt this kind of
believing and thinking for yourself,
the UNIVERSE AND THE COSMIC
LAW OF ATTRACTION sets up a
sequence of events that draws to you
opportunities where you make choic-
es. Those choices become a life cycle.
Go ahead, choose now. Write
down what you do NOT want and
opposite it write what you DO want. We live in a polarized
world, for every negative there is also a positive feeling,
emotion, understanding, words, and choice. Remember you
are one hundred percent responsible for your life. Your
parents just gave you birth; you choose the life you want to
live. There is help everywhere at your finger tips; look for it,
ask for it and let it find you, but do take action on every
thought you have because thoughts become things.
Make the thoughts good ones.

if read as noun + verb is,
“Life…cycles,” meaning
that life moves, in circular
ways. What’s that about,
you ask? I think that two
important aspects of life are evoked by the phrase, “Life cycles.”
First, in my work with my coaching clients, I frequently offer
the following model in assisting them to accept the vicissitudes of
growth on their journey. Picture an ice cream cone (only the cone,
please, a “sugar” cone)! It’s a three-dimensional spiral shape, going
from a point at the bottom to an ever-widening spiral as it ascends.
Picture a line down the center of the cone — left side labeled “dark”
and right side “light”. This is a model of life’s journey —
ever-expanding and ascending but moving into and out of darkness
and light (the hard times and the joyful ones). I love the Chinese
farmer story (John McMullin tells it so well!) — “Is it good, is it
bad, who knows?” Well it’s all good, but not always pretty or easy.
I recently watched the new Deepak Chopra movie entitled,
How To Know God. My favorite line went something like this —
“Anyone who believes in chaos can’t see far enough.”
The other important aspect of “Life cycles” and of the
spiral model (or the ice cream cone model!) is the Law of
Polarity. We’ve been hearing a lot about the Law of
Attraction lately, but what’s the Law of Polarity?
It is best said simply — what goes up, comes down.
As with the motion of a pendulum, what swings out in
one direction, swings equal ly out in the oppos i te
direction. This physical energetic principle also assists
us to understand and embrace the cycles of life, the ebbs
and flows of life. It also provides us with a r ich and
never-ending source of what Abraham (non-physical
group of teachers channeled by Esther Hicks) calls “contrast.”
This “contrast” is what gives birth to new desires always arising
in our lives, and is the impetus for our powerful co-creations.
The Law of Polarity
explains why the recent
popularity of the movie
The Secre t has now
spawned a burst of
contention about the
ideas portrayed in the movie. Many have been especially triggered
by the central premise of the Law of Attraction which states that we
co-create our lives —that there are no “victims”. People are indeed
wrestling with what has become the new paradigm of the New
Millennium—that the earth is not flat, or round, it is VIBRATION —
and that we literally co-create what we are seeing by the act of looking
at something. Also, that our thoughts coupled with our feelings
eventually manifest the physical reality of that vibration. These
conceptions are, at the same time, hugely empowering (we are
Creators) and immensely disturbing (we create both “good” and “bad”).
Rest assured that as “Life cycles”, it will both challenge us and calm us,
for it is not what unfolds, but how we interpret it, that is our ultimate reality.
In closing, I offer you three of my favorite phrases of powerful wisdom.
“Be easy with yourself.”Abraham as channeled by Esther Hicks
“Be as little children.”Jesus
“Judge not.”Jesus
Using these will assure, that as your “Life cycles”,
you will enjoy and appreciate the ride.

irst, let’s look at some of the many cycles of three
as they appear in our lives on a daily basis. In
matters dealing with time and space, consciousness
or any relationships, we cannot escape the fact that cycles of
three are everywhere we turn. When we discuss time, we
speak in terms of past, present and future. Philosophers say
a thing is not true for you until it is true in thought, word
and deed. We have three moments in our perceptions—
before, now and after. Some psychiatrists use the terms
superconscious, conscious and subconscious. Religions
describe the Holy Trinity — Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
While meditating, we go in and out of three levels of
existence — the physical body made up of matter and energy,
the subtle body made up of ego, intellect and mind, and the
causal body made up of the spirit, soul and all that is.
Holistic healers refer to mind, body and spirit. In dietary
theories, we speak of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
An entire book could be written on the presence of
threes in our universe and in our reality. However, this
month I would like to write about Ayurveda medicine and
the three Doshas which are named Vata, Pitta and Kapha and
about nutrition as it relates to the three seasons. You’ll notice
that I say three seasons instead of four, because in Ayurveda,
fall and winter are combined as one.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the word
Ayurveda, it is a Sanskrit word derived from two roots:
ayur, which means life, and veda, which means knowledge.
Ayurveda medicine is an ancient wisdom tradition of India
and, over time, Ayurveda came to be called the Science of
Life, which encompasses our entire being – the body, mind
and spirit. It is clearly unique in this moment in history to
find an effective system of medicine over 5000 years old and
more surprising that it is still today one of the largest in the
world. While Ayurvedic medicine is in its infancy here in
the United States, over 300,000 doctors make up the largest
medical organization in the world called the All Indian
Ayurvedic Congress.
Ayurveda recognizes that all life, whether human, plant
or animal, must live in harmony with nature. Just as we
know that birds fly south in the winter and that leaves turn
red and drop from the trees in the fall, Ayurveda is composed
of daily and seasonal routines that promise optimum health
and longevity. In our Western culture, we tend to insulate
ourselves from the huge changes that take place from one
season to the next even though our very survival may depend
on it. Ayurveda considers the major cause of disease to be
our lifestyles which go against the natural balance of nature.
Prevention starts with a body, mind and spirit that are in

harmony with the changing cycles of nature. It focuses on
prevention of illness and the body’s natural power of cure.
In Ayurveda, health prevention is dictated by the unique
requirements of each body type. What we eat, how we exercise,
when we sleep and even the climate in which we live can all be
understood according to the Ayurvedic body type that is dominant
in each of us. There are three basic mind-body types called
Doshas. These three basic Doshas are Vata (fall/winter), Pitta
(summer) and Kapha (spring). Vata types tend to be thin,
hypermetabolic, and think and move quickly. They typically
have dry skin and cold hands and feet. They do not like cold
weather because they already have many of the winter qualities
inherent to their nature. Pitta types are competitive, hot and fiery
with a medium frame. They prefer cool weather. Under some
conditions they may get heartburn, skin rashes, inflammatory
diseases or they just burn out. Kapha types are easy-going
and hypometabolic. They will hold on to more weight and
water, and tend to develop allergies and congestion. They can
become lethargic, obese and are more prone to depression
under certain conditions.
Here in our Western culture, eating has become very
complicated. There are more dietary theories than there are
days in the month. While animals that run free in nature seem
to balance their nutritional needs quite well without the knowl-
edge of fats, proteins and carbohydrates, we incessantly count
calories and measure grams of fat. Then we learn that
there’s a new study just released which tells us
the rules of eating have changed once
again. In Ayurveda, the rules remain
constant. In Ayurveda, as the
seasons change and different
foods are harvested, we
change the foods we eat.
In winter, for example,
the squirrels eat nuts. Nuts are
a great source of protein and fat.
This is a perfect food to help combat
the cold dry weather in the winter, or
Vata, season. Grains that are harvested in
the fall and cooked in the winter are also a
perfect winter food. Cooked grains provide a warm heavy
nutritional base that helps us adapt to the cold of winter. In
spring, after eating all the heavy nuts and grains during the long
sedentary winter, nature again provides the perfect food. Light,
leafy green veggies and berries are the first foods harvested in
the spring, or Kapha, season. They also serve as the natural anti-
dotes for the allergy season. As the days get warmer in July and
August, nature provides cooling fruits and vegetables to balance
the heat of summer, or Pitta, season.
Ayurveda understands the cycles of nature and that these
cycles will provide what we need. These cycles also provide
a rhythm of life that is enjoyable and full of life and good health.
Unfortunately, our society has demanded that we rush and
persist on the stressful fast track, pushing our way through life
in order to get ahead. Unfortunately, the worst violation of
natural law revolves around our meals and how we eat. We
frequently race through our meals or many times we skip meals.
Ayurveda recommends that the main meal be at midday and
this meal should be eaten slowly and calmly. Rushing through
our day, racing through lunch and coming home to eat our
largest meal of the day at 7 o’clock or later when the digestion
is the weakest is against the powerful healing force of Mother
Nature. Living in harmony with nature’s cycles takes us toward
the health benefits of a calmer, more peaceful lifestyle that will
help heal us and bring us a more joyful existence.

hile you’re caught in the cycle, it can feel as
though you’re going round and round the
same old unresolved issues. However, that
is only one perspective. Looked at from in
front, the movement does indeed look like
a circle. But looking at the process from the side, it can be seen
to be a spiral. Seen from the side, it is apparent that the circular
process of practice has a forward movement to it as well—like
the movement of a screw. Each time we go around the
circle, we come back to old issues with new experience and can
grasp the old issues in new ways.
Let me give as a simple example my experience with
breathing practice. I’ve been practicing and teaching Aikido
for thirty-eight years, and I also practiced Karate for a number
of years. Breathing practice has formed an inner
foundation for the outer self-defense movements.
The martial arts provide a perfect opportunity
to study how we get caught in fight-or-flight
tension and constricted breathing. With the
kind assistance of your partner/attacker, you
have an emergency to practice handling in a
calm, efficient, effective manner. Watching
your breath and keeping it steady as you
perform the defense techniques is an important
part of the practice. Down through the years,
I have often realized that softening my
breathing is crucial. Every six months or so, I
realize that I have still been putting too much effort
into the really simple, really easy action of breathing.
When I began Aikido, I focused on softening my
belly as I inhaled and exhaled, trying to let go
of the tension in my breath which seemed
such an automatic part of defending myself from attack.
I found that letting my belly plop loose when I inhaled
made my Aikido moves more graceful, more flowing and
much stronger.
When I teach this form of breathing, two issues often
come up. First, many people believe that tensing the
abdominal muscles is necessary for preventing back strain.
It is true that strengthening the abdominals is helpful, but
voluntarily clenching the muscles on an ongoing basis
is very different and interferes with free movement. Second,
people feel that they look bad when they let their belly be free.
All I can say to this is that I think people look better when they
are relaxed, balanced and strong.
When I started Karate, I learned the sanchin breathing
technique. In that breathing practice, all the large muscles
are tensed and balanced against each other in movement
and the breathing has a “roaring” quality to it.
I think that the tension involved in the practice is
a strategy for amplifying the perfectly ordinary
act of breathing and raising it to conscious
awareness. My experience was, that when I
finished the exercise and released the dynamic
tension, my whole body glowed and flowed.
Lately, I have been working with an exercise
I call Seamless Breathing. It offers an interesting
way of integrating calmness and alertness. When
I breathe this way, I experience a sensation that my
body is filled with sweet spaciousness. The feeling
reminds me of the soft sweetness of confectioner's sugar.
Of course, this is just what is presenting itself to me
now. I can’t wait to see what the next go round
of the cycle will be.

The Spiral Cycle of Practice
By Paul Linden, Ph.D.
Anyone on a path of spiritual practice will hit plateaus now and again — periods of time during which their progress
grinds to a halt. Or periods of time during which they feel that they are regressing. Things that once were difficult and
had been mastered are difficult all over again. Personal issues that were dealt with and seemingly resolved arise again.
After a time, the stuck place leads to new awareness and insight. This is the cycle of practice and growth.

Pay attention to the rhythm and feel of your breathing. In particular, notice what happens at the moment you shift direc-tions of breathing, from breathing out to in, or in to out. Most people catch or stiffen their breath slightly. However, thatis not necessary.
It will be easiest to learn how to free your breath by first deliberately tightening it. At the moment that your breath shiftsdirection, for just a second or two, hold your breath and constrict your throat, chest and belly. That will serve to amplifythe slight gripping you probably had been doing before.
Now let go of the gripping completely. Let the back of your throat soften and widen, and breathe so gently that yourbreath no longer halts. Instead of breathing in a reciprocating line, like a piston going up and down, you will feel thatyou are breathing more circularly, without any distinct change of direction. Your breathing will feel seamless, and yourbody will feel lighter and freer.

1Be open to Spirit and develop an awareness of your own inner
world through meditation, prayer, and a loving desire to live a
life of service to all living beings and the planet. You’ll be
amazed at the richness and joy you’ll experience as you tap into
your inner world. Children are especially adept at exploring
their inner worlds, so take your child—or your inner child—on
an exploration of the wonders of meditation and deep prayer.
Begin with the intent that you wish to explore the place of
love within you. Use a guided meditation CD, music, or med-
itative breathing. As relaxation spreads throughout your
body, allow yourself to experience the love that you are, the
truth of who you are. Begin deep prayer work by thanking
Spirit for your life and that which is in your life; then relax
and ask that it be revealed to you the ways you can be of service
to life and live a greater, more expanded and exalted life.

spheres with easy-to-do-crossover exercises. Cross the right hand
over the front of your body and tap the left foot seven or eight
times. Then, cross the left hand over the front of your body and
tap the right foot seven or eight times. Repeat the exercises, but
this time cross your hand over the back of your body.
Practice doing things with your non-dominate hand, such
as opening doors, brushing your hair or teeth, or even
writing. In addition to opening more pathways in your brain
for intuition, you’re also creating more brain power for
problem solving and critical thinking skills.
{ }Developing intuition through each life cycle is a healthy way to take charge of the way our lives unfold — whether the cycle be of the months or years of our lives, or the smaller cycles we go through daily from the time we rise until we sleep. Here are seven ways to develop your intuition. Each is designed to help you get past the brain patterns you’ve created with your normal thinking. These methods mix up your thinking process in order to help you reach deeper into your intuition.
Developing Your Intuition Through Life’s Cycles

3Heighten the awareness of each of your five senses. Intuition
may be called the sixth sense, but if our five senses are dull,
we can’t expect the sixth sense to be sharp. Our lives offer an
endless playground for our five senses. In my workshop,
Awakening to Your Deeper Intuition, we mix things up a bit
through processes that allow us to smell colors and taste
sounds. You can do the same. Begin by holding an object,
any object, such as a stone or piece of cloth. Become intimate
with that object. Look at it until you can see it with your eyes
closed. Then ask yourself what the object tastes like. Use your
imagination. You don’t actually have to put the object into
your mouth and taste it.
Once you’ve gone through all five senses, mix it up and ask
yourself questions such as: What color is the taste? or What
does the object’s sound feel like? Then go to the next level
and ask yourself questions such as: If this object could speak,
what wisdom about my life would it tell me?
4Become aware of the whispers from Spirit by becoming
more aware of life in each moment. Be open to receiving
information and guidance to help make your life better.
Nature is a wonderful teacher for intuition. Pay attention
to the animals that cross your path and the winged ones
who grab your attention. If you live in the center of Ohio
and a flock of seagulls dip and dive all around you, listen.
Are they asking you to let go of your worries and soar with
them? Nature is alive with stone people, cloud people, tree
people, and a myriad of others who speak to us all the time.
We only need to listen.
5Journal and dialogue with that which is greater than you:
God, a spirit guide, an angel. The highest self of someone
you love and trust who has passed over. Choose a regular
time to meet. Following morning meditation is ideal. Use
your favorite blank journal, and just start writing, or if you’re
a visual learner, draw. It doesn’t matter what you write, just
write, or draw, and keep on going for about three pages.
It usually takes about three pages to get past the objections in
your mind that keeps you from accessing your deeper nature.
You’ll feel the shift, and once you do, write a question, then
write the answer. Don’t judge the answer as you write, just
write down the words that come to you. This is a subtle
process. Don’t expect shouts. Trust what comes. Later, go
back and read what you wrote. You’ll be amazed at the
wisdom that comes through your inner world.
6Play intuitive games with yourself and others. Before getting
into line at the bank or market, ask yourself which line is the
quickest. Gather a group of photographs of different people
that are all the same size, turn them upside down, and then
guess whose picture is on the other side of each photograph.
Use your intuition to stay safe. I live in deer country. Every
time I feel the deer near, I slow down. Sure enough, deer will
be around the next corner or over the next hill.
7Let go of control and surrender to that part of yourself that is
connected to Spirit. None of us are in control of life, but we
are in charge of our lives. We can choose to experience life to
its fullest, or not. We can choose to be grateful for what we
have, or not. We can choose to live a life of service to our
own lives and to all humanity, or not.
Trying to hold control is like trying to stop a river from flowing.
Taking charge of your life is becoming the master of your
own destiny, flowing with the river and laughing all the way,
and allowing your intuition to guide you to a greater, more
fulfilling life.
These steps to awaken to your deeper intuition take time and practice.
Be patient and loving with yourself.Like all life cycles, tapping into your intuition
comes in its own time, but comes only after you take the steps toward
your own greater self.

It seems that something does interfere with our ability to live in complete God-consciousness and states of happiness, innerpeace, and loving kindness, to name a few. If so, what is it andwhat are the ways we can heal these obstacles? Answers to thesequestions reside within us, within the dimensional matter thatmakes up our bodies and contains our souls during our timehere on earth.
In today's culture, most people think of the time from ourbirth until death as the full range of our lives. Psychologist Eric Ericsonprovided a good basic map of the stages of development of the humanfrom birth on and the issues faced at each stage. Is this really where ourlife begins and ends? If you've seen the beautiful book, A Child is Born,by Lennart Nilson with its amazing still photographs of the journey ofthe egg, sperm, zygote, and fetus, you might report that life beginsmuch earlier than birth. Although this wasn't taught back when I wasin health class, its now known that the early cells that become the “you”that is born, start even prior to the egg and sperm. Each of us has livedin the womb of our maternal grandmother within our own mother'sreproductive system while she was a fetus. Some would say our beginnings start even earlier than this, as we come down to earth intoour mother's bodies as infinitesimal specks of pre-cellular matter.
My spirit marks its own beginning as the dream/memory of filtering downto earth as tiny pieces of rainbow glitter. I was overwhelmed with greatanticipation and excitement about fulfilling my mission on earth in thislifetime. Then those specks slid into matter where they began to join forces of nature to become the expression of a new human.
What does happen to each of us after those moments of entry? The knowledge about where the life cycle begins does make a difference in our day- to- day lives. In the last two decades, a number of techniqueshave been developed that allow one to recall the events that happen inutero. To most people's surprise, (including mine) when they areregressed to these memories they find that they are self-aware. Theybecome aware of a variety of states of exceptional consciousness that arequite different from their everyday selves. It has been discovered that weacquire different types of peak states during specific developmental events,as our organism grows more complex. Consciousness researcher, GrantMcFetridge states, “ If these states are experienced without trauma, wehave these states after birth. If these events are experienced with minortrauma, we can move in and out of the states to one degree or another, particularly when using certain spiritual practices”. When there is majortrauma we are usually blocked completely from accessing that state.
Creator and Mother Nature (a.k.a. Gaia) give us everything weneed as we develop. Some people during regression are able to hearand have documented the verbal instructions received from Gaia ateach stage of development. Just as birds are told when its time to flysouth for the winter, the developing human is given guidance at everystep along the way. Yet, problems still occur in utero for most of us thatcan set us up to be kicked out of the good feeling states we were meantto carry into our lives after the birth process. Sometimes we don't hearthe instructions from Gaia, or we hear and react to the wrong thing.Other times, events outside the womb, like mother taking a fall or thepressure from the first contraction can cause physical injury to thefetus. The implications of the developmental event model are that,

Developing Exceptional StatesBy Shelly Pinnell, M.S., L.I.S.W.
What is the complete and true nature of our human life cycle? How does our biology help us to be, or keep us from being who we were meant to be?
Are we fully living our birthright as humans?
HD Master April 07 work 4/2/07 12:54 PM Page 30
if we can heal these in utero events, particularly at key developmentalpoints, we can get back into and stay in our good states continuously.
Science is learning more and more about these key developmentalevents. One of the earliest phases of development, which occurs on theegg and sperm side, is called coalescence. This is where the beginnings ofthe brain consciousness are formed, the big three being mind, heart, andbody. Dr. Paul McLean identified that these correlate to the old brain(body), the midbrain (heart), and the newer outer cortex (mind). Othermajor events are when the egg leaves the ovary, conception, implantation, first contraction and birth itself. Each of these events, when successfullycompleted can be associated with a particular state of consciousness.
On a lighter note, just learning about the pre-natal developmentalprocesses can provide insights and appreciation into the mysteries of life, particularly between the genders. For example, there is some biologicexplanation for the difference between the way men and women communicate. Women (who primarily identify with the egg's experience, even though both the egg and sperm are part of their development) sitpacked in the ovary for several decades with hundreds of their sister'swith nothing better to do but chat with each other, possible origins of thetea party. While men are often imprinted with the experience of beingwhipped around by the tail's of their brothers on the path to the egg, frantically working their way there, only to bang their heads againstsomething that resembles a large planet that pulls them in and then they die.Is it any wonder we have a hard time getting them to talk to us sometimes!
Some people are born with one or more exceptional states, such asinner peace or underlying happiness, that are unshakable. Others areborn with abilities, such as the ability to heal, inner vision or the ability tocommunicate with nature, which are attributes of particular states. Thesepeople did not get their states by doing spiritual practices. Most of usknow people like that, but we were not so lucky. Many of us have spent a number of years seeking different states and diligently practicing meditation or other disciplines, sometimes with disappointing results. The possibility now exists, due to the breakthroughs in methods for healingtrauma, for having our blocks to peak states eliminated quickly and moreeasily than ever before. Many effective healing techniques can be used toget peak states, once you know what to heal. How exciting it is to now beable to target and acquire particular states and develop new abilities.
There are many techniques that are being used in combination oralone to target healing the blocks to peak states. This new generation oftherapies is also beginning to cross lines between body workers, mentalhealth professionals, and other alternative healing practitioners. Somevery good healing method's such as Gary Craig's, EFT and GrantMcFetridge's, Whole Hearted Healing technique are in the public domainand accessible via the Internet. Practitioners have taken other effectivetechniques, such as EMDR, rebirthing, birth psychology, brainwave training, and cranial-sacral work and adapted or expanded their use inthis area. T Some modalities help clients achieve one particular stateand maintain it, such as Jacquelyn Aldana's, 15-minute Miracle, which isrelated to the state of gratitude. A number of the techniques in this areaare still being researched, like the Institute for the Study of Peak Stateshealing method, called Primary Cell Repair.
When one's awareness of the lifecycle is expanded to include yourpre-birth self, all kinds of possibilities are opened up. The journey ofrecovering and maintaining your exceptional states of consciousness hasimplications for community and the world, as well as the individual.Gaia and Creator want us to be happy and healthy at the deepest level.Imagine what the world will be like when we are all in constant states ofinner peace, happiness, and loving kindness! Join the journey and receiveyour birthright.

ave you ever
noticed that
bad luck or
good luck
seems to follow the same
person? And, have you
noticed that gratitude
seems to find gratitude,
and resentment finds
resentment? People who
understand the nature
of energy cal l this
phenomenon karma.
This energy expression
is the secret of The Secret.
Many people believe that
the secret of life is a story
of the laws of attraction,
but sometimes we fail to
look deeper to find the secret of The Secret.
The great secret is that we draw into our life not only
a consciousness of what we want or don’t want, but we also
attract our subconscious and unconscious beliefs that were
formed in our early time on planet Earth. If we learned that
attention was commanded through compliance or defiance,
then our human ego continues to vibrate at that energy and
draw that kind of behavior toward us, even though our adult
self is humiliated and hurt.
Then how can we use the secret of The Secret to draw
desirable events into our life? Perhaps we can’t change the
destiny of our birth and death, or any of the events in between, but
we can change how we choose to experience them.
If every event in our life
is synchronous with the
great plan of One, then is
it possible that we are
continuously guided by
our Higher Self to navigate
through life to meet our
exact destiny? An example
might include not paying
attention to the gas in our
car and finding our self
angry, along the side of
the road, because we are
delayed in finding more
gas to get us to our
destination. What we
didn’t realize is, that if
we had filled the tank
and didn’t have the delay,
we would have been part of the terrible car accident down
the road, one we never knew occurred.
If we can teach ourselves to express gratitude for all the
events in our life, we don’t need to understand why they
were necessary to keep us synchronous with our journey
on Planet Earth. What would it mean if we woke up every
morning expressing gratitude for all the events in our
dreams, and went to bed at night expressing gratitude for
all our day dreams? Learning to be conscious and express
gratitude for those things we know, for those things we
don’t know, and finally for those things we don’t know we
don’t know, allows us to embrace the mysteries of life and
to accept that what goes around, comes around.

ORDERS OF LOVE / MOVEMENTS OF THE SOUL: A Family Systems Approach to FreedomWhile traditional therapy often centers on the individual, Orders of Love concentrates on the family system, offering unique insight into the ties that bind us to others. Orders of Love is not about pathology or diagnosis, rather, it is about the honor, respect and love that promote freedom from suffering.
Love flows among relationships: from parent to child, between partners and among family members.Ignoring those orders brings about consequences that inhibit our ability to be successful in other realms of our lives, like relationships and careers.
Orders of Love works for people who feel burdened by personal issues that prevent their happiness andimpede their growth and success. It can address various aspects of life, including interpersonal relationships, death, divorce, adoption, incest, rape, murder, illness and addiction, as well as organizational dilemmas.

BENEVOLENCE CAFEA QUIET RETREAT in the city offering: food that nourishes the body, company that nurtures the heart, conversation that stimulates the mind and an intangible essence that feeds the soul.
COOKING WITH A CONSCIENCE. Ethics in life is everything. It is a great understatement to say that tryingto run an ethically green cafe in the middle of a city in the twenty-first century is a challenge. It is expensive and labor intensive, but we do it. We shun anything that is ready made.We buy our vegetables as fresh as we can, use organic when available, and prepare dishes from scratch. It’s our way of putting love into our food.
