JAN’S JOTTINGS Volunteerism at its Finest
H ave you ever wondered just what is the Sartell
Senior Connection (SSC)? Who is in charge?
How does it operate? What makes it tick? How do
you join or get involved? These are all good questions,
the answers to which amaze me. Let me try to explain,
but first a few caveats. The SSC is under the umbrella
of the Sartell / St. Stephen Community Education and
as such, we enjoy connections with the school district
and the support and assistance of Ann Doyscher-
Domres
We
appreciate local churches that allow us to use their
facilities for large group events. Basically we owe our
successes to many and appreciate all.
However, SSC and its wonderful programming could
not exist as it does without the nitty-gritty day-to-day
workings of many volunteers. It amazes me to look at
the SSC website (sartellseniorconnection.com), or read
the SSC newsletter, and see the number and variety of
programs and activities available to area residents – all
planned and facilitated by volunteers. We have a list of
30 committees or groups that plan and take charge of
different events. I know it is cliché to say that those
who volunteer get as much or more from volunteering
than they give, but it is true. It is great fun to work with
other to make plans and follow them to fruition. Carry-
ing off a successful new activity is very satisfying.
Speaking of new events, search this issue
for them. Whenever someone comes up
with a new idea, we are eager to give it a
try. If you have ideas or suggestions, let
us know – or better yet, join us in the
planning. The SSC is open to all who
wish to participate. Jan Sorell

SARTELL CONNECTIONS JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2015 7
O nce again the Sartell Senior Connection and Sartell-St. Stephen Community Education
are teaming up with the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University Nursing Program to
offer free health screenings for adults 55 and better. This is a clinical experience for second year
nursing students involving primary prevention and health promotion.
This is an excellent opportunity to discuss with a student nurse how to stay healthy, live
an active lifestyle and prevent illness. You will also be helping a student nurse develop
professional skills. Each volunteer will be matched with a student nurse for a health interview.
The student nurse will perform a blood pressure check, pulse and respiratory check – nothing invasive.
After the initial interview the student nurse and volunteer will meet one week later to go over the
recommendations formulated by the student nurse. This year a third meeting has been added to be scheduled
at the volunteer’s convenience to do a follow-up on the recommendations.
Can you volunteer if you had a student nurse interview last year?... YES (
How many volunteers do you need?.......27
How do I volunteer?…..Call me at 253-4036 option 4 to sign up for a time to meet with a student nurse.
The dates for the interviews are:
Thu. Feb. 19 and 26th,
Fri. Feb. 20 and 27th
Thu. Mar. 19 and 26th.

SARTELL HAPPENINGS
Development Activity: Sartell Building Permit Summary thru November, 2014:
Total new single family home permits - 71 (total value $16,745,700)
Total all permits (re-roofing, remodels, commercial, etc.) – 1,177 (total value $28,177,984)
SeeClickFix In November, Sartell announced a new program that will allow residents to report quality-of-life issues and request Sartell services through an online and mobile interface. SeeClickFix allows residents to document neighborhood concerns and improvements alike, ranging from litter and flooding to damaged sidewalks,
zoning issues and malfunctioning traffic signals.
How does this work? You can report quality-of-life concerns through ,
or SeeClickFix.com (enter Sartell).
as they see the issue in real time. Once the resident submits an issue, the reporter, Sartell, and anyone ‘watching’ the area will receive an alert. The Sartell can then acknowledge the service request, route it to the proper department, and update the request—and residents following the issue—once it
is been resolved. Residents can also submit anonymous issues.
The partnership allows residents to report community issues, as well as view, comment on, and vote to fix problems submitted by their neighbors. Citizens can even create their own “watch areas” to receive notifications about all issues reported in their community, enabling them to follow the progress of all
service requests---not just the ones they report.
I’m learning how to knit. I signed up for a begin-ning knitting class at a local craft store to learn the knitting basics. We learned about the most common types of yarns, the supplies and gadgets needed for most projects, the “knitting language”, and the beginner techniques to make a dish cloth. There was plenty of time to practice during the first class to get the hang of holding the needles correctly and follow-ing through on each knit stitch. Our assignment was to finish all the knitting stitches. During the final class we learned how to separate the piece from the knitting needles and were able to start another dish cloth with a slightly different pattern. I looked for-ward to working on the project throughout the week telling Mom how enjoyable yet challenging the pro-ject was and began to search for other patterns to
tackle once the session ended.
The National Center for Education Statistics report that half of the U.S. adult population (43% for men, 49% for women) is enrolled in some form of life-long learning activity. So
what is life-long learning? It is the process of keeping one’s mind and body engaged---at any age---by ac-tively pursuing knowledge, experience, or a new skill. Life-long learning has many benefits including
evidence that keeping one’s intellect engaged during and after middle age can significantly reduce the risk
of dementia.
Community colleges, trade or technical schools, community education, senior and/or community centers as well as local businesses offer life-long learning activities for older adults on almost every topic imaginable. Did you know retired seniors can take college classes for free or at substantially discounted rates? We are fortunate to have many options available in Central Minnesota. Check them out and happy learning!
