REPORT ON CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY FOR THE FY 2013-14
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
1. Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) considers Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a
means to serve the society including all stake holders. All activities under CSR vision of the
company forms an integral part of the Business function and covers community development
initiatives prioritised on local needs.
2. The yard continues to show its commitment towards CSR even though it is not required to
allocate dedicated funds towards CSR being a loss making organisation in accordance with the
DPE guidelines. As a part of it, the Board of Directors has constituted a Board level sub-
Committee on CSR and Sustainability and formulated a CSR & Sustainability Policy and Plan
for the year 2013-14. The Chairman of the Committee is Shri Samirendra Chatterjee, IAS
(Retd.), Non-official Part time Director.
3. A Senior Management Committee on CSR & Sustainability has also been constituted to
monitor the implementation of the CSR Plan for the year 2013-14. The Senior Management
Committee is chaired by an officer in General Manger Cadre with HODs/ Senior Officers from
all concerned Departments of the yard as its members. The Committee oversees and
implements the CSR Plan for the year 2013-14.
4. Since HSL is a loss making organisation, the company has identified some of the need based
CSR initiatives for the betterment of the local people and society. The following activities have
been undertaken for the betterment of all stakeholders, local people and the society at large as
a part of CSR initiative of the Company:
World Ozone Day on 16 Sep 13
5. Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam observed “World Ozone Day” on 16 Sep 2013.
Over two hundred school and college students and staff from the educational institutions
functioning in the HSL township in Gandhigram, Members of HSL Rover Scouts, Scout band,
took part in an impressive rally to create public awareness of the dangers of Ozone depletion
and the need to reduce use of CFCs, Carbon emissions etc. Banners highlighting this
information were also displayed at various strategic locations. Members of Senior Management
Committee of the Company, Officer Bearers of the Officers Association, HSL Labour and Staff
Union, SC/ST employees’ welfare association and BC employees welfare association attended
and participated in the function and the rally.
International Coastal Cleanup Day on 21 Sep 13
6. Hindustan Shipyard Limited Visakhapatnam partnering with Indian Navy observed
International Coastal Cleanup Day” on 21 Sep 2013. Over one hundred and fifty enthusiastic
school and college students and Staff from educational institutions functioning in the HSL
township in Gandhigram, Members of the Rovers Scouts, Members of CSR Senior
Management Committee of the Company also participated and lent their hand in cleaning up
the sea shore along Varun Beach.
Mega Medical Camp on 20 Oct 13
7. Hindustan Shipyard Limited organized a MEGA FREE MEDICAL CAMP on 20 Oct 2013
in its residential Colony. Rear Admiral N K Mishra, Chairman & Managing Director Hindustan
Shipyard Limited, while inaugurating the medical camp appreciated the services of various
specialists, Doctors and Paramedical staff who voluntarily participated in the camp by
sacrificing their weekend. He acknowledged the services of the CSR Committee which had
organised this event. He assured that many more such noble activities will be organized by
HSL under CSR & Sustainability initiatives for the benefit of the under privileged members of
the neighbouring community. Renowned Doctors from various Specializations rendered their
valuable support for the cause. Nearly 550 people took benefit of this free medical camp.
Senior Officers and members of the CSR Committee, Doctors and Paramedical Staff
attended. NCC cadets and Rover Scouts contributed their services during the Camp.
World Environment Protection Day on 26 Nov 13
8. On the eve of the “World Protection Day, the yard conducted competitions such as essay
writing, quiz, slogans, debates etc. on environment protection among all employees and prizes
were distributed. A play let was also organised to emphasise the need to protect the
Environment namely “Vriksho Rakshati Rakshitaha” at HSL main gate. Apart from above, a
rally was also conducted with the participation of HSL School & College Students, Teachers,
Rovers & Scouts and employees.
Blood Donation Camp on 30 Nov 13
9. Hindustan Shipyard Limited organized a BLOOD DONATION CAMP on 30 Nov 2013 at
Ambedkar Community Hall in its residential Colony in association with Lions Club of
Visakhapatnam. Cmde.KLN Prasad, Director (Corporate Planning & Personnel), HSL while
inaugurating the Blood Donation Camp, has emphasized the need for blood donation and
appreciate the Volunteers for their blood donation. He acknowledged the services of the CSR
Committee of HSL for organising the mega event. He assured that many more such noble
activities will be organized by HSL under their CSR & Special initiatives for the benefit of the
Society. A record number of 254 employees of HSL donated blood. Senior Officers and
members of the CSR Committee, Doctors and Paramedical Staff including representatives of
the Unions/Associations participated in the event. HS Rover Scouts contributed their services
during the camp.
National Energy Conservation Day on 14 Dec 13
10. As a part of Energy Conservation day, the yard organised a short play-let titled “Meere
Aalochinchandi” in HSL residential colony on 14 Dec 13 to create awareness among colony
residents about energy conservation and its benefits. The play-let was staged by HSL
employees and was witnessed by a large number of employees and colony residents. Apart
from above, Debate and Slogan Competitions were conducted and prizes were distributed.
National Road Safety Week from 11 – 17 Jan 2014
11. Over One lakh persons lose their lives every year in our country in road accidents and
many more are debilitated, causing economic hardship and emotional trauma to their families.
The Central and State Government have been implementing measures to make our roads safer.
The magnitude and gravity of the problem, however is such that Government efforts alone will
not suffice. There is a need for Society at large to take cognizance of the issue and to join hands
to make Road Safety a social movement.
12. Keeping the above in view and as a part of “Observance of 25th National Road Safety
Week from 11-17 Jan 2014”, Hindustan Shipyard Limited organised “Sticking of Black
Sticker” on the head lights of vehicles on 17 Jan 2014 to dissuade dividing with high beam.
The programme was organised at Scindia Junction. H.S. Rover Scouts and employees of HSL
have stickered around 1500 vehicles (two wheelers/four wheelers) with the help of local police.
Members of CSR Committee, representatives of recognised union, HS Rover Scouts and
employees of HSL participated in the programme.
“Arrive Alive” Campaign for Road Safety
13. Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam, under its corporate Social Responsibility and
sustainability initiatives organised a rally on Traffic Safety Awareness programme on 27 Jan
2014 in support of the “Arrive Alive” campaign for road safety. Nearly 400 students of
Hindustan Shipyard Junior College, HS Degree College, Gandhigram Vidya Nililayam and
other educational institutions situated in shipyard colony along with Lecturers & Teachers of
above Educational institutions participated in the rally. Cmde K S Subramanian, Director (SB),
flagged off the rally. Cmde K L N Prasad, Director (CP &P), Cmde Ashok Bhal, Director (SP),
members of CSR Committee, representatives of recognised Union, HS Rover Scouts and
employees of HSL participated in the programme. HS Rover Scouts and employees of HSL
participated in the programme.
Environment Protection
14. Tree planting is the most popular Earth Day event and one of the most common activities
people associate with helping the Earth. Planting is an act of putting down roots and
contributing to the future. The simple act of planting a tree, helps the environment in so many
ways i.e., filter pollution from the air, help recycle water, prevent soil loss, create shade, give
shelter from wind and rain, provide homes for animals, make food for humans and wildlife,
provide an interesting, soothing, learning environment for children and your community and
much more! Without trees, there would be no life on this planet!
15. With a view to protect our environment Shri. Samirendra Chatterjee, IAS (Retd.)
Chairman of CSR & S Committee of the Board of Directors, planted a sapling in the yard on
25 Jan 2014. Cmde KS Subramania NM, Director (Shipbuilding), Cmde KLN Prasad, Director
(Corporate Planning & Personnel) and Cmde. Ashok Bhal, VSM, Director (Strategic Project),
Shri. PV Gopala Rao, Chairman, Sr. Management CSR & S Committee and Shri. Kumara
Mangalam, General Secretary of the Trade Union also planted saplings on the same day.
Free Internship Training to students
16. HSL provided free internship Training to 52 students of various colleges, educational
institutions to carry out project work/study/training under CSR activity during the year 2013-
14. HSL exempted from payment of fee to two physically handicapped students to undertake
Project and research work at HSL under CSR initiatives during the year 2013-14.
Augmentation of Library of Colleges run by Gandhigram Education Society
17. In order to provide quality education to the students of economically backward and weaker
section of the society, HSL has taken the steps to augment the libraries of the colleges run by
Gandhigram Education Society. Shri Samirendra Chatterjee, Chairman of the CSR Committee
during his visit to HSL has handed over the library books worth Rs.30,000/- to the principals
of Junior and degree colleges in Colony.
18. Apart from the above, the company also bears the expenditures towards electricity and
water of the six educational institutions functioning under Gandhigram Education Society
(GES) for the educational needs of the students of surrounding areas.
Mega Medical Camp 30 Mar 14
19. HSL organised a mega free medical camp at its residential colony on 30 Mar 14 for the
benefit of underprivileged members of the neighbouring community under its Corporate Social
Responsibility initiative. The Camp was inaugurated by Commodore Ashok Bhal, VSM
(Retd.). Commodore Bhal appreciated the services of the doctors who participated voluntarily
in the camp. Nearly 350 people came for a check up at the camp. The Camp was attended by
senior officers and doctors and paramedical staff.
SUSTAINABILITY
Training programmes / workshops / seminars for executives, staff & workmen
20. During the year 2013-14, Company conducted 52 programmes with external and internal
subject experts on various topics for the benefit of executives, staff & workmen under the
sustainability initiatives. 790 Officers, 124 staff and 160 Workmen were participated and took
benefit from these programmes. Further, during the year 2013-14, Company also deputed 85
executives to various seminars/workshops organised by professional bodies viz., CII, SCOPE,
NIRDESH, ICAI, ICSI, ICWAI etc.,
Year of Quality
21. HSL has observed the year 2013-14 as the year of quality. Following activities on Quality
were undertaken during Apr- Mar 14 to spread awareness on Quality.
(a) A quality slogan, Essay Competition, Elocution competition, quiz Competition were
conducted and 10 selected slogans have been displayed at various locations in the yard.
(b) Various Quality Workshops on various topics were conducted
(i) Classification Societies Role in Shipbuilding
(ii) Changes in Statutory Rules & Regulations and its implications in Shipbuilding
(iii) Quality through Self Excellence
(iv) WPS / PQR - DNV requirements
(v) Quality Concepts and Problem solving techniques
(c) Periodical interaction meetings were held with Indian Navy [WOT(V)] and Indian Coast
Guard [CGRPT(V)] on 26 Jun 2013 and 28 Jun 2013, respectively.
(d) Quality policy handouts with action plan were distributed to officers & supervisors on 29
Jun 2013 to achieve desired quality standards.
(e) In order to infuse awareness of quality, competitions were conducted for best housekeeping
workshop / work centers on 01 Jul 2013.
(f) To improve production with stress on quality, quality circles were formed at various shop
floors on 02 Jul 2013.
(g) Training on “ISO 9000-2008 Standard Quality Management Systems” was conducted to
middle level officers on 25 Jul 2013. Training on “ISO 9000-2008 Standard Quality
Management Systems” was conducted to middle level officers on 25 Jul 2013. “Internal
Quality Auditors Training & Qualifying Course” was conducted for 20 officers on 7 & 8 Aug
13 by IRQS, Visakhapatnam.
(h) Best workshop / work centre competition was held and rolling trophies were awarded on
15 Aug 13.
(j) Quality Seminar on “Ship Structural Design Concepts” was conducted on 18 Sep 13 by
Sri MSP Raju, Sr. Surveyor, DNV, Visakhapatnam.
(k) All HoDs and Officers participated in the Management Review Meeting on “ISO 9001-
2008” held by C & MD. Ten officers participated in “Presentation, Displaying &
Demonstration of Fluke Test, Measuring & Calibration Instruments” organised by M/s
TTL Technologies Pvt Ltd at Naval Dock Yard, Visakhapatnam on 5 - 6 Sep 13.
(l) On 4 Jan 2014, Quality workshop on “NAVAL Vessels Classification & Design principles
“by Sri. M S P Raju, Sr. Surveyor, DNV, with participation of Directors, Representatives from
CGRPT (V), WOT(V), EMT-11184 and Sr. Officials of HSL.
(m) On 04 Feb 2014, Joint Quality workshop on “Shipbuilding processes in HSL” with Senior
Officials from local PSUs viz., RINL, NTPC, DCI & BHEL, HPVP with the participation of
Directors & Sr. Officials of HSL.
(n) A Quality Workshop on “Naval Architecture for Non-Naval Architects” covering ship
stability, ship resistance and ship design was organized on 14 Mar 14 by Sri M S P Raju, Sr.
Surveyor, DNVGL, Visakhapatnam with the participation of middle and junior level
Executives of HSL and representative from GML, CGRPT(V), WOT(V) and EMT.
(o) A Quality Workshop on “Naval Architecture for Non-Naval Architects” covering ship
motions, ship manoeuvring and ship propulsion was organized on 15 Mar 14 by Sri M S P
Raju, Sr. Surveyor, DNVGL, Visakhapatnam with the participation of middle and junior level
Executives of HSL and representative of GML, CGRPT(V), WOT(V) and EMT.
(p) A Quality workshop on “Welding of Thin Scantling Structures and Necessary Safety
Measures” was conducted on 21 Mar 14 by Sri T. Chatterjee, Sr. Principal Surveyor, ABS,
Visakhapatnam with the participation of middle and junior level Executives of HSL and
representative of GML, CGRPT(V), WOT(V) and EMT.
Energy Saving measures
22. Proactive energy saving initiative have been initiated to ensure the following:
(a) To restrict the usage of Plant and Machinery, Air Conditioners, Fans & Lights etc. to
optimum level in order to reduce wastage to the barest minimum.
(b) Switching off power supply whenever machinery & equipment are not in use.
(c) Switching off office lights & fans, whenever the personnel leave their offices and personnel
are not in offices.
(d) Efforts on hand to use solar energy for street lighting in the residential colony.
(e) All incandescent bulbs being replaced by fluorescent/ CFL bulbs in a phased manner.
