EXECUTIVE PRODUCER WELCOME hermosa summerconcerts 2012*................................................................................................................................................................................
................................................................................................................................................................................
Right around the last week of May, the excitement begins to return as we start gearing up for what has become
our favorite communit y event of the year, the Hermosa Summer Concerts. Three years ago, when the City
of Hermosa Beach faced cutting the concerts from their annual budget due to the struggling economy, we
saw an opportunity for Saint Rocke to contribute to the community and uphold the spirit of what our name
implies to create more opportunities for the art form of live music to thrive in the South Bay. And since
then, we havent looked back.
Growing up in the South Bay, there was always live music being played, but there were very few actual venues dedicated
to the art. We definitely remember our parents going to The Strand to see Nina Simone, Miles Davis, and a plethora of
other supersta rs in their prime, but ultimately times changed and the location became a Bristol Farms supermarket . So in
2007, when we were forming our concept and making a commitment to being a live venue rather than a nightclub, we truly
believed that we were helping save the art of live music from disappea ring from the South Bay altogethe r. And so, when
we decided on a name, it came naturally one day in a conversation: lets save RocknRo ll in our hometown. Lets be the
Saint of RocknRol l. Saint Rock. Add the e to Rocke so that we dont look clich, and there you have it.
Today, we are respectfully trying to carry on this local musical tradition that started back way back with Howard Rumsey
and the Lighthouse Allstars, and we see the success and quality of the Hermosa Summer Concerts as integral to our
mission. We hope youll enjoy the concerts this year, and we wholehear tedly thank all of our sponsors for contributingto the survival of these free community events. And for those of you that enjoy watching the concerts on the beach
bringing your family and friends, creating memories remember that these small local businesses that sponsored the
concerts are what made that possible. Next time you shop, we hope youll remember that and support these businesses
in the same way they have supported our community. Long live music.
Musicallyyours,
Allen Sanford

youre going to make soul music joyful, authentic, modern yet classic
ul music it really helps if that music is allowed to come straight from
ur soul.
bble To A Pearl the latest radiant gem by the gifted singer-songwriter
d performer Nikka Costa is far and away her most direct and convincing
usical statement yet. If this is Costas most pleasing album to date and it
arly is then its exactly because the woman singing to us so powerfully
s finally found the creative freedom to first and foremost please herself.
ve never felt so proud of an album, says Costa who earned rave reviews
d devoted fans around the world with her kinetic live performances and
tinctively funky albums 2001s Everybodys Got Their Something and
05s Cantneverdidnothing. Obviously, I want people to hear the album
d love it, explains Costa. But, when it comes down to it, I dont care
cause this is a totally unfiltered expression of who I am and what I do.
bble To A Pearl is the uplifting sound of an artist unbound following
difficult period with her previous record company sadly, an all too
mmon story in recent years. This was a totally different experience and
e that felt emancipating, Costa says. First, I got out of the old label,
ich was major. Now Im just so happy not to be caught up in that big
achine thats breaking down. For a while, it felt like I was on deck of the
anic, and I was just supposed to play the violin for myself on the ship as
was going down. I know that I was feeling that way and could tell the
ople at the company were feeling that too but no one could admit it.
ere was bullshit going down all around me, and I was extremely happy to
t out of it all. Of course, then I had to figure out what the hell to do. I knew
anted to make another record, but how?
r a lifelong soul music lover like Costa, making her album and now having
affiliated with the legendary Stax Records, whose roster included some
the best in soul music like Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes, is the fulfillment
a dream. How perfect is that? Costa says with a huge, winning smile.
tax is the epitome of what Im about that was the original, integrated
ul music. Thats the vibe that moved me about soul music when I was
elve, and it moves me still.
nikka costaHow did the bad form? Before More Love, I began as a solo singer songwriter and put out an EP called
Heavy Rest. While touring the EP, I was listening to a lot of Paul Simon, Bob
Marley and Michael Franti, and I began to write the song On my Way. During
a gig in Venice Beach, my current guitar player Daniel Konscious Krieger was
in the audience, and I invited him to sit in on bass. Prior to this night few people
were dancing to my music, but that night we had the whole crowd jumping.
That was really the beginning of the band vision, which eventually led to the
making of our album More Love. After that night, Konscious joined as the lead
guitar player, and he brought in Austin Nicholsen on bass. Austin, Konscious,
and I played together as a trio for a few months before Austin brought in Josh
Heffernan on drums. Not long after, during a gig at the Malibu Inn, our current
percussionist Will Phillips was at the show playing with another band, and being
a friend of our drummers, we invited him to sit in. Will eventually introduced us
to Steve Aguilar, our keyboardist. I like how each new band member brought in
the next guy, as the band grew. We have a really strong family vibe in the band,
because we were all friends first, and musicians second.
What is the isiratio behid the bads msic? Our goal is to inspire people to essentially be happy and spread the feeling
they get from the music to people in their own life. We named the album
More Love because the music stems from a real desire to spread more
love in the world. At the time, I felt inspired to write music that stood up to
the many challenges that we all face in these times, and I wanted to start
spreading high vibes with the music. Each of us understands that music is
a powerful medium to express emotion, and our goal is to get the crowd
singing and dancing together at every concert. Our genuine inspiration is
to uplift the world through our music.
What is the ext moe for More Loe?
We are releasing our record More Love on June 30th, and hosting an album
release party at MOMAI (Museum of Music and Instruments) in Venice Beach,
CA. We are looking forward to our concert on July 29th, opening up for
Nikka Costa at the Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series. After that well
be touring around the country promoting the More Love record. For more

th an astounding quarter-of-a-century track record of producing 22
bums for the same label, it would be tempting for an artist to begin to
ke it all for granted. The fame, the adulation of fans and critics, and the
ry process of making music could all become too predictable. But not
the notable case of Poncho Sanchez. For the leader of the worlds most
pular Latin jazz group, conceptualizing and producing a new session is as
mulating and rewarding as its ever been. The thrill is far from gone. And
ther has the pride of ownership been diminished. This albums got it
the globes most recognized conguero says of his new Concord Picante
ease, Raise Your Hand. I like what I like, and this is it.
terms of stylistic variety and the involvement of special guests, Raise
ur Hand underscores Ponchos hands-on approach to crafting every
w album. This record also highlights the conga legends innate curiosity,
sincere interest in a wide spectrum of popular music, and his cordial
ationship with an eclectic group of world class musicians. On 10
vigorating tracks, Raise Your Hand explores traditional salsa and Cuban
usic, bebop-rooted and West Coast-seasoned Latin jazz, and vintage
tin soul a spicy amalgam of R&B and funk. Along for the ride with
ncho and his well-traveled octet are some of the most hallowed names
traditional salsa and soul music. Fabled Puerto Rican sonero Andy
ontaez guests on one sensational salsa track, while R&B icon Booker T.
nes, in the company of his Mgs guitar legend Steve Cropper and vocalist
die Floyd, add their patented funky licks to two Floyd classics. Rounding
t the guest roster are saxophonist Maceo Parker and singer Jos Perico
rnndez. And behind the participation of every guest is a personal story
at gives their involvement special significance.
When we perform, I tell people, This is Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz
nd, he concludes, strongly accenting the words Latin jazz. I do like
mess around with soul music and salsa, so youre going to get some of
at too. But there is always going to get a strong dose of Latin jazz, you
n count on that.

The New B*Side Players Album REVOLUTIONIZE is the highly
anticipated 10th release from the San Diego based world music heavy
weights. Revolutionize is an organic Latin funk blend of reggae, cumbia
and Soul with a conscious message of unity and liberation. The new
record features legendary percussionist Poncho Sanchez, guitarist Raul
Pacheco of Ozomatli and Drummer Ryan Moran of Slightly Stoopid.
The B*Side Players have been laying down their own inimitable latin
global funk since they came together in 1994. Their incendiary live
shows have defined them as local favorites with 9 San Diego Music
awards. Meanwhile their albums showcase a band with restless musical
intelligence, effortlessly blending genres to fashion their own forward
looking, Latin flavored soul music. As an eight piece band the players
are known for igniting crowds with their fierce rhythms and uplifting
message of unity and consciousness. Meanwhile always keeping their
focus on the political climate of the world and nation. The B*Side
Players are a living and breathing cultural art experience for the mind
body and soul.
Who can throw down references to Emiliano Zapata, Victor Jara and
Che Guevara on the opening track of an album and make it sound like a
war cry for the most fun party of revolutionaries ever?...
Ayala Ben-Yehuda - Billboard Magazine
B*Side Players played the purest reggae of the night though still
blending funk rhythms and Latin grooves into their overall sound. They
were solid, explosive and larger than life, embarking on a quest for
harmony and taking each of us with them on their fantastic journey.

e Spazmatics were born in the spring of 1983 when physics professor
vin Stigwood of Alta Dena High in Thousand Oaks California, lost a
bate over String Theory to an upstart pupil in front of the entire student
dy and faculty. As agreed to by both parties, the loser would have to do
ything that the winner demanded, and the victorious prodigy demanded
at Mr. Stigwood perform She Blinded Me With Science by Thomas Dolby
ring half-time at an upcoming state basketball championship game.
ving no musical background and desperate to not go down in total
miliation, Professor Stigwood formed The Spazmatics by tapping the
nius of electronics teacher Sidney Baderman (AKA Sid Sonic), who had
hieved international acclaim in 1981 for his invention of robot drums.
hen Baderman (who was also the girls water polo coach at Alta Dena
ddle School) explained that most of the music could be generated by
mputers, and that all he needed was a couple of decent musicians to
mplete The Spazmatics, Stigwood was ecstatic. To make The Spazmatics
mplete, Stigwood brought in his special needs brother Curtis on bass,
d teachers assistant Rusty A. Woosmeir (AKA The Raw) on guitar.
hen The Spazmatics took center court that evening, members of the hip

production, world class musicianship, and tight choreography. The

James Clay Garrison: Greatly influenced by the rhythms and musical
styles he experienced during his years as a child in Spain, James Clay
Garrison became a virtuoso guitarist and vocalist at a very early age,
recording his first LP at only 15. Already an experienced performer,
he went on to tour the U.S., Europe, and Asia with various bands
throughout the late 80s.
James moved to Los Angeles when then untouchable guitarist, Eddie
Van Halen, made his group an offer to record on the WB label after
Eddie had seen the band perform in James home base, Shreveport,
Louisiana. During those first years in Los Angeles, James fronted and
helped gain recording contracts with several popular 80s Sunset Strip
bands, wrote and recorded a variety of original material, and worked
with the legendary Ray Charles as Writer/Producer/Musical Director.
James has recorded and/or performed with such artists as Stephen
Stills, Brian Wilson, Van Halen, Dave Mason, and many others. Players
around Southern California have referred to James as the top Singer/
Guitarist in the industry.
His songs have been covered by artists as varied as Ray Charles, Shem
(Ambrosia, Kenny Loggins Band), Jeanette Clinger (Hiroshima), and
more. He has written and produced award winning regional & nationaljingles for clients from S&W Fo ods to P epsi. He has also worked on
some of the best selling video games (Redneck Rampage, Quake 3)
as Music Consultant, Composer and Sound Designer. He has been a
featured Singer/Guitarist and Actor on national television shows (such
as General Hospital, Cop Rock, 21 Jump Street, and Santa Barbara) as
well as recently working as a Composer for FOX.
Currently, he is in the studio tirelessly putting the finishing touches on
his long awaited new solo release 1000 Million Miracles. James is also
busy as a session and live Musician/Vocalist performing and recording
throughout Southern California.

st summer, you were the Saint Rocke breakout band at the HBSCS.
w was that show signifcant to you as a band playing on the beach o
ur hometown?
was awesome especially because we were unannounced and it gave
ople a chance from the neighborhood to really get to know our
nd. It has also been something we have talked about doing since
started.
ter the last year or so o growing your an base nationally, how do you
y grounded to your South Bay roots?
at is kind of a silly question because 3 of us are born south bay locals
d the south bay will always be our roots no matter where we are, what
do or where we go.
e South Bay is well known or its musical inuence in the beach
ggae, ska & punk genres. That being said, how does that aect a band
e yours coming out o the South Bay?
e have been influenced by so much music being from Los Angeles.
e South Bay offered the influence of punk and surf music where such
her neighboring cities offered hip hop, reggae influences, rock & roll and
ctronic. Its a melting pot and its important to dig for music and just
en to it all.
hat was your avorite part o the HBSCS?
e fact that it was kept very local.
What did you learn in the early stages o the band that has helped you
while on the road perorming on major tours?
Be professional but at the same time never take yourself too seriously and
have fun!
What advice do you have or other local bands rom Hermosa Beach?
HAVE FUN!!!! Enjoy every moment of playing with your friends!!! Dont
ever get stuck and experiment!
