November 16 Helping Hands Newsletter 1
November 2016 • Dover, Delaware
President’s Message Sue Hoecker
Vice President’s Message Mary Dawn Ditty
Thinking About New Year Quilting Resolution You are an awesome guild! You have attended meetings and
workshops, made a raffle quilt, sold tickets, donated handmade
quilted items, donated many items for baskets, etc. You always
seem to answer the “call.” That is why we will be entering next
year with a budget that can fund our programs!
It’s never too early to plan, SO next year I want to resolve
to get to know more of you. There are a lot of quilters out
there that I want to become better acquainted with. I plan to
start at the luncheon in December. It’s a great way to get to
know each other in an informal setting. I also plan to meet
more members when attending events and workshops. These
fun days are where I can connect with others and share skills
and a sense of wonder when I have the opportunity to figure
out a new technique, short-cut, or trick. Please, join Helping
Hands as we travel on our quilting journey. In the January
newsletter, there will be info and a synopsis of our 2017
programs. As soon as the programs are finalized, it will also be
available on the website.
I am asking that the majority of you will look over these
events and choose one or two workshops to attend. There will
be a combination of member-led, teacher-led, Sit N Sew, and
projects for worthy causes. Whatever your skill level, you can
learn something. If these events are well-attended, we can
offer more topics in 2018 and our 2017 will be a success!
If you haven’t paid your dues, your name will be dropped and all
non-members will be required to pay a $5 entry fee per person,
per meeting. Also, a guest fee of $5 was instituted. If the guest
decides to join the quilt guild as a member, they will receive a $5
credit towards their membership dues. The $5 collected will
help offset the guild’s costs. This is a ruling from our Board…it’s
just unfair for those who haven’t paid to keep receiving our
newsletter, and enjoy benefits of members.
Thank you for all your cards and well wishes during my back-
surgery recuperation. Everything went well and I’m now starting
to get out and do small events. I am blessed to enjoy your
friendship and commitment to Helping Hands. Together, we will
enjoy another year of growth and skill building in our quilting
efforts. Sue Hoecker

Refreshments Robin Aschenberg
Hello Ladies of Helping Hands. So, this month we have our
holiday meeting with the "stash relocation" event. I am making
chicken salad. Everyone should bring something to contribute to
our refreshments. Since we won't be meeting in December feel
free to be "festive" ! We will all be busy with looking and bidding
so make your snack easy to grab and eat. Have a lovely holiday
season and see you all again in January of 2017! Your

Helping Hands Newsletter
It’s that wonderful time of the year…membership drive!! Many
have already paid their dues, others are unpaid. Now is the time
to renew your commitment to Helping Hands. Your dues and
funds gained from our fund-raising efforts pay all the great
speakers we enjoy each month. We’ve been fortunate to be able
to appreciate speakers of varied skills nearly every month this
year. Funds collected from workshops, especially of “big”
speakers, usually cover the cost of that workshop. Mary Dawn
has speakers committed for ten months of 2017 and several
already booked for 2018. We try very hard to keep our costs
down by having members host our speakers to save hotel and
restaurant expenses. It’s very expensive to host a speaker.
Please read the Board meeting minutes (Page 5) from this
month, and pay your membership at the November meeting if
you haven’t already. The membership roster will be published in
January.
Let’s also make a resolution to volunteer to help our guild as
well as participate in a service project. Together, we form a
great guild! Please, join in!
January Speaker: Gail Kessler
Gail Kessler will be our January speaker. I am looking forward
to her already! She is a long-time fabric designer and was a
thread rep earlier in her career. She comes with high praise and
recommendations from Mary Beth Scarbarough, President of
Piecemakers and a quilt shop owner. Come and see what you can
learn about fabric, this important part of our quilting efforts.
More about her program in the January newsletter. Put it on
your calendar!
Big “THANK YOU”
We received a nice note from Pat Yamin who is such a warm,
nice lady. She said, “Loved your guild and your warm hospitality.
Keep in touch.”

The board discussed the possibility of moving our Monday night
