FOREWORDThe aim of the strategic plan will be to guide the HFL WA Board’s future directions. Among other things it examines future activities/programs and funding streams so that HFL WA can sustainably deliver its services and potentially expand its activities.

HFL WA’s networks are stronger in the South West and that greater linkages need to be made with other parts of the State, especially Perth.

The strategic plan is based on a thorough understanding of the organisation’s strengths, constraints and members’ interests and capacity, as well as opportunities and trends operating in the public health sector. It takes into account existing and future potential for service delivery and other resourcing requirements, including staffing needs.

In addition the Strategic Plan includes an outline marketing strategy that will help attract clients for the service as well as posi-tion HFL WA to undertake new services and develop appropriate partnerships.

We hope the plan will inform, inspire and motivate support for HFL WA and take the organisation to a new level of providing caring to those in need across Western Australia

As a strong community based and supported organisation, Heal for Life Western Australia (HFL WA) wishes to be able to provide highly relevant and valued services to its clients in future years. The purpose of this Strategic Plan is to establish a guiding document for the next phase of our development. This includes the implementation of strategies to ensure the organisation’s long-term sustainability and viability for the benefit of clients and the community of Western Australia.

WHO WE AREThe Heal For Life Foundation was started in the 1990’s to establish a safe place for survivors of childhood trauma and child abuse to find healing and to be empowered to heal from the affects of their childhood trauma or abuse, such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, mental illness and adverse coping strategies.

Heal for Life has been operating in WA since 2006 and is supported by Heal for Life Foundation. Heal For Life Western Australia provides a safe, non-judgmental space for survivors of childhood trauma and abuse.

We believe that every person has the innate ability to heal from childhood trauma. We see healing as holistic i.e. involving body, mind and spirit.

Currently we offer a residential five-day program - living within a community that has clear and agreed boundaries - is designed to be physically, emotionally and culturally safe to promote healing.

Guest confidentiality builds the necessary respect that leads to trust. We share knowledge, derived from contemporary theories and research. This is the first step towards understanding and so being able to take personal responsibility for ongoing healing. Each person is validated, encouraged and empowered to be in control of their own healing journey.

Therapeutic strategies are used to assist the guest, which in turn leads to emotional release associated with past trauma. Healing also involves the re-empowerment of the inner child and guest. Feeling loved and accepted is essential before a person can heal from within.

Carers and facilitators, who are themselves survivors of childhood trauma and abuse, are best able to support, love, understand and help others. Each guest is supported to create their own meaning and interpretations. Carers and facilitators avoid directing, giving advice or placing their own interpretation on the guest’s process or meanings.

We believe that issues of power and control need to be dealt with openly, transparently and in ways that promotes equality. Everyone - regardless of race, religion, gender, culture or sexual preferences - has the right to access self-healing with the loving acceptance and support of our trained carers.

OURHISTORYThanks to support from Heal for Life NSW and its founding member Liz Mullinar, along with funding from Westpac Corporation Foundation, Heal For Life WA held its inaugural five day residential Healing Retreat in May 2006. For the first few years, HFL WA was run single handed by founding member Evee Knight who describes the experience as ‘an adventure and a huge learning curve’.Since then, Evee has gone on to inspire other members of the local community to pull together and develop the well run organisation it is today, with many of the team being past participants of Healing Retreats who now have the expertise and experience to assist other West Australians to heal from childhood trauma.
