Now that the new year is officiallyunder way, how many of you aresticking to those New Year’s res-
olutions? It’s easier said than done, so Icommend all of you who are exhibitingpure dedication to that annual list. Mindyou, I have made a list of my own I’mtrying to abide by, but let’s see how longthat lasts, shall we?
For starters, I want to enjoy working out.Honestly, I dread dragging myself on thattreadmill, or running a mile or two aroundmy neighborhood — it’s pure torture, so Inever do it. Visits to the gym are a no-go,and with a job like mine, where all I do is
eat, unfortunately exer-cise is a must!
To go along withmy goal of starting upan exercise regimen,I’m also on a quest toeat healthy.
With that said, thisweek I figure whynot start off the yearby focusing on a foodI love, and on top of

Tomato Bisque Soup has always been
my weakness, and I’m happy to knowthat it’s available whenever a cravingstrikes. Yet, since I have a relativelylarge appetite, my order of choice wouldhave to be the Grilled Cheese Sandwichand Tomato Bisque Combo ($9), andmay I add, Kissaten’s Grilled CheeseSandwich is winners!

Yakiniku Million has added a deli-cious Kal Bi Seaweed Soup($13.95) to its menu, and Mung
Bean Pancake ($5) to its list of appetizers.This non-spicy soup, also known as the
birthday soup, is a traditional birth-day dish in Korea. I know thisfrom my daily dose of Koreansoap operas.
“It’s good for you too,”says manager Diana Paik.“It’s Korean custom formoms to eat it after givingbirth. They eat it three timesa day for one month becauseit’s good for blood circulationand milk production. It’s alsopopular with men, when you’resick and after drinking alcohol.”
In addition to its late-night hours(it’s open until 2 a.m. on week-ends) and yakiniku or grill-it-yourself-at-your-table style ofdining, Yakiniku Million alsois known for its large menuof ready-to-eat traditionalKorean favorites, such asKal Bi Kim Chee Chi-Ke($13.95) and Bul Go Gi DolSot Bi Bim Bab ($14.95).
Kal Bi Kim Chee Chi-Ke fea-tures kal bi, tofu, kim chee andgreen onion, with a medium spicysoup base. “Not a lot of Koreanrestaurants make this,” notes Paik.“And you can order it extraspicy.”
The Bul Go Gi Dol Sot BiBim Bab has carrots, zucchi-ni, bean sprouts, mush-rooms, soybean sprouts andcabbage. It’s mixed with ricein a hot stone pot, whichkeeps the food hot longer andthe rice slightly crispy. Everymeal includes seven sides: daikon
kim chee, raw crab, potato salad, driedcuttlefish (taegu), won bok cabbage kimchee, seaweed stem and mackerel withsteamed daikon.
Yakiniku Million, which is local-ly owned and operated by
the Park family (four
sisters and a brother), opened its doors 25years ago. The restaurant is located at 626Sheridan St. off of Kapiolani Boulevardnear Ala Moana Center, and parking isavailable behind the building. “These areall our family recipes,” adds Paik. “It’sfood we enjoyed eating growing up.”

In December, Romano’s MacaroniGrill, the popular family eatery inAla Moana Center, introduced 20
new items to its menu, includingseven pupus. Found under the ItalianTapas section of the menu, the itemsrange in price from $6 to $9, but din-ers can order two for $12. Thesebonus pairings are smart not justbecause they add value to your meal,but they can create a balance of fla-vors when chosen correctly. Theyalso can add a little adult flavor to thekeiki favorites your youngster willinsist upon.
The Mac & Cheese Bites withTruffle Dip ($6) is family comfortfood without the needless utensils thatjust slow you down. The exterior iscrispy, the interior rich with cheeseand firm pasta. Chef Mike Longworthsays the appetizer has been extremelypopular, especially with the children.
“What’s not to like,” saidLongworth with a smile. “It’s macand cheese with a cheese dippingsauce that we add a little truffle oilto for the adults.” A nice pairingfor the
cheesy yet surprisingly non-messyfinger food is the Shrimp, CannelliniBean & Avocado Crostini ($9). Thecleanness of the shrimp, beans andavocado and the crunchiness of thecrostini provide a nice flavor andtexture complement to the Mac &Cheese Bites. Plus, it looks far toohealthy to interest the keiki, meaningmore for you.
The Spicy Ricotta Meatballs($6.50) go well with the Goat CheesePeppadew Peppers ($7). The meat-balls are mild with a slight citrus fla-vor that comes from fresh orange andlemon zest. Ricotta cheese and pankobread crumbs help add to the texturewithout making the dish heavy.Whereas the meatballs are mild, thestuffed peppers are anything but. Boldwith spice and pickling flavor, thepeppers explode with juice and aromawithout being overpowering. AsLongworth says, it is a flavor youwon’t get anyplace else.

Yun, in Aina HainaShopping Center servesthe best Chinese food onthe East side, according tosatisfied customers.Owner Julia Wong statedthey changed the name toAina Haina Chop Suey onJan. 1. She wanted thelocation in the name, andthe “chop suey” that fol-lows has an old-schoolfeel that she wants tobring back.
“You don’t see too many
chop suey houses any-more,” Wong says.
Dining Out caught upwith Sandy Shinozawa ofHawaii Kai and AileenSylva of Niu Valley,friends who frequent AinaHaina Chop Suey on a reg-ular basis. They love theclean facilities, the courte-ous and pleasant staff, thegenerous portions and thefact that the venue is soclose to where they live.

At Curry King (OK, not only is the
word in its name, but it’s wearing acrown!), a Japanese eatery in WardWarehouse, curry rules, although theone we’re after isn’t on the menu. Butthat doesn’t discourage us. Savvy vege-tarians know to ask politely for whatthey want, and most of the time therestaurant is happy to oblige. So that’sjust what we did.
Tofu Curry ($7.55), is a bowl full offlavor with tofu, onions, carrots, cab-bage and your choice of starch, accom-
panied by a small green salad.The curry sauce is “standard,”says owner Shane Yang, whoreserves the right to not revealall of its ingredients. But, heassures us, there is no meat orfish in the sauce.
If curry doesn’t hit the spot,Yang also recommendsVegetable Tempura ($7.55),made with seasonal vegetablesthat may include zucchini, egg-plant, carrots, onions, broccoli— whatever is available. It’sserved with rice or noodles, and comeswith a small green salad on the plate.
“I plan on putting that on the menu,”says Yang. “We may come up with somemore vegetable dishes in the future.”

Sushi King owner and manager Shu-LeeKondo founded the restaurant in 1992 afteroperating another Japanese restaurant in
San Francisco. But while Kondo has run three restau-rants — the third was at the Stardust in Las Vegasbefore the hotel shut down — her longtime success inthe industry started out as something of a fluke.
Kondo is originally from Japan, but relocated toCalifornia as a young adult. For her husband, a chef,owning his own restaurant had been a lifelong dream.But just six months after he realized his dream byopening his restaurant in San Francisco, he wentblind. At the time, Kondo was working in banking andknew very little about the restaurant business. Butwhen her husband asked her to take over his restau-rant, she agreed.
“I said, 'why not?' Let me try,'” Kondo explains.“How could I say no? It was his dream.”
When she moved to Hawaii years later, her initialintent was to retire here. But seeing an opportunity toopen Sushi King, she decided to start another restau-rant instead. Twenty years later, Sushi King is stillgoing strong. In keeping with its family-run origins,Sushi King has attracted a loyal customer basethroughout the years, and Kondo says that she thinksof her staff as an extended family.
“My husband always taught me that the employeesin your restaurant are family because you spend somuch time there,” Kondo says.
The Sushi King kitchen also is home to the Joe Alohafood truck, which is known for its smoked meat. JoeAloha, which is run by Kondo’s son-in-law, prepares itsfood at Sushi King. The truck is located in front of SmartStop Storage on the corner of Kamakee and Kawaihaostreets. It is open Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

For healthy dishesbursting with authen-tic Vietnamese fla-
vors at reasonable prices,one does not have “pho” togo. Pho My Lien, locatedin Westridge ShoppingCenter, is ringing in 2012with a brand-new takeoutmenu highlighting theeatery’s most popular dine-in dishes. These dishes arefavorites among Pho MyLien customers, accordingto Walter James, a closefriend and business partnerwith the restaurant’s own-ers, Tommy Dang and hiswife, Lien Bui.
“We started offering ourbrand-new takeout menuon Jan. 1,” says James. “Ifsomebody wants anythingon the main menu for atakeout order, they canhave it, but the (restau-rant’s) most popular dish-es are on the takeoutmenu.”
Pho My Lien’s newtakeout menu featuresdishes such as Crispy
Spring Rolls ($7.50 forfour) — thin flour sheetsrolled with pork, chicken,shrimps, shredded carrot,long rice and mushrooms,deep fried and served withmint leaves, lettuce, ricenoodles and sauce — andCrispy Calamari ($7.95).The menu also boasts anassortment of salads,including the frequentlyrequested Chicken Salad($7.50) — shredded skin-less and boneless chickenmixed with shredded let-tuce, mint leaves, onionand house special dressing— and Green PapayaSalad ($7.50). The latter,composed of shreddedgreen papaya, shrimp,mint leaves, peanuts andserved with a house spe-cial salad dressing, will bethe eatery’s special for themonth of February.
“Each month, we offer amonthly special for $4.99or less,” he says. “Thismonth’s special is theWon Ton Soup (a shrimp
and pork dumpling soup).February’s monthly spe-cial will feature the GreenPapaya Salad.”
For customers lookingfor healthy dishes, Jamesrecommends the eatery’ssignature dish, pho($7.95), with the cus-tomer’s choice of meats,including slices of raresteak, beef soft tendon,beef well-done brisket,beef tripe and beef balls.Pho with Chicken Meat($7.95), Pho with MixedVegetables ($7.95) andPho with Shrimps andSquid ($8.95) also areavailable.
While pho is the restau-rant’s signature item, PhoMy Lien offers customersa variety of healthyentrées from which theycan choose. James alsorecommends BroccoliSauteed ($7.95) with onechoice of chicken, pork,beef, shrimp or tofu. Therestaurant’s Summer Rolls($4.95 for two) are anoth-er good choice for healthydining, as they feature ricevermicelli, mint leavesand bean sprouts wrappedin rice sheets with themeat of one’s choice.
“The appetizers are allpopular, but if you look atthe summer rolls, there aredifferent varieties,” Jamesexplains. “You can have
(summer rolls with)boiled shrimp, shreddedpork, barbecue beef, bar-becue pork, barbecuechicken or tofu … if youwant to eat healthy, youcan simply have tofu sum-mer rolls.”
While Pho My Lien ispromoting its new takeoutmenu, it has not changedits dine-in menu. Jamesstates that the eatery hasremained consistent in itsmenu items and reason-able prices ever since itfirst opened in November2010.
“We’ve not raised ourprices on the menu; we’restill going to give yougood value for yourmoney,” he says. “For thequality and quantity (offood) that you get, it’spriced very, very reason-ably.”
Although the eatery isnot anticipating any majorchanges in terms of itsmenus, James states thatPho My Lien is currentlysearching for a secondlocation.
“Basically, we haven’tchanged from last year;we’re keeping the samephilosophy of deliciousfood at reasonable prices,”he says. “We’re still goingto cater to families — weoffer food with family-style prices.”
