Walnut Street Church of Christ Volume 46 November 20, 2016 Number 47
INVOLVING YOU…Larry Snow
Everyone remembers a good teacher. I’ll bet you have some
great memories of loving teachers who made a difference in your
life. Perhaps they even shaped a decision that became a part of
your future. That’s a big deal.
I have fond memories of many teachers throughout my life. Many
made a difference for me, for which I am thankful. Some of my
fondest memories are those of my childhood Bible class teachers.
While I remember some of the topics, mostly what I remember are
the feelings. Feelings like being welcomed and accepted make a
difference. My father was a preacher during the time gospel
meetings were plentiful. I went to many Bible classes growing up,
at a lot of different congregations. The common denominator was
that of loving acceptance. As I look back I realize it was these
teachers that played a major role in how I viewed the church.
Each in their own way were communicating the love of our Lord
one class at a time. Bible class teachers helped me learn about
Jesus, His love for me, and His will for my life. They did not have
to be giants of theology or scholars of biblical languages to make a
difference. They just had to be willing.
My recollection of the character of those early childhood teachers
is more of a composite than that of any individual. Mostly they
were older. They seemed much older than my mother and more
like my grandmothers. The wisdom and experience of our seniors
is to be valued. It also reminds that we are never too old to make
a difference. (And, like the grandparenting experience, you get to
give them back to the parents at the end of the class.) They were
prepared. Whether it was a flannel graph story (yes, I remember),
hand work at my seat, reading the Bible, or any of the other
methods there was a plan for the lessons.
“A teacher plants the seeds of knowledge, sprinkles them with
love, and patiently nurtures their growth to produce tomorrow’s
dreams.” (Unknown)
Isn’t it time for you to teach again? You can sign up this morning
in the Gathering Room.
Thanks Singing—Tonight! What can I do to make our Thanks Singing a great success?
Pray for a successful singing, that God will be glorified, that all
who attended will be encouraged and edified, and that friends
from the community will join us for the evening.
Make the commitment to be present and sing in spirit and in
truth. Please, do not let anything else keep you from
participating in this year’s singing. Let’s make this year’s
Thanks Singing one of the biggest and best in history!
Let the Thanks Singing be a vehicle to invite friends and
neighbors to worship with you. While the Scripture commands
us to sing (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16); one of the great arguments
for a capella music in worship is a congregation of God’s
people enthusiastically singing a capella. This will be a
wonderful time to invite your friends from other religious groups
to attend with you.
Be a loving and welcoming host. Many who attend will not be
Walnut Street members. Please be sure to graciously speak to
and offer assistance to all our guests.
Prepare for the Finger-Food fellowship to follow. Be sure to
bring food for your family and several of our guests.
Happy Thanksgiving In all things be thankful
