It was a weekend that had been keenly anticipated by the Hale Rugby community for weeks. The sun shone, and it was a suc-

cessful weekend for all teams.

The Year 7s and 9s recorded comfortable wins; the Year 8s conceded a late try to draw, while the Year 10s avenged an early

season loss and ended Guildford’s unbeaten run. The 2nds also recorded a fine win, while the 1st XV turned in a polished dis-

play to account for the competition leader- overall a fine weekend.

While the bye was welcome the previous week, we entertained and hosted Fettes from Edinburgh. In the end we won com-

fortably, though the 41-17 score line flattered us. Nevertheless, it was a good hit out and thanks to all those families who host-

ed the Fettes boys.

Please note that the Middle School Rugby BBQ will take place this Friday 19th August after the last fixtures v Christ Church-

see flyer for details, while the Annual Rugby Presentation dinner takes place on Thursday 25th August- again see details of the

dinner in this newsletter. Year reps will also be in contact.

2nd XV REPORT

As I sit to write this report I am finding it difficult to find the superlatives that would in any way pay just tribute to the

performance of the Hale 2nd XV on Saturday. They played their hearts out. The forwards were challenged by a bigger

and stronger pack but found ways time and again to send the Guildford forwards reeling. The Hale forwards found all

the ball that was necessary and then some. This is an exceptional backline and on Saturday they had great possession

and they turned in their best performance of the year. They were always dangerous and those who saw the game

would have been enthralled by the skill and boldness of their play.

Liam O’Shea skilfully led the side, as he has done all season, and his team responded on every occasion to the game

that he wanted them to play. He ensured that quality ball made it to the three quarters in good condition on all occa-

sions. This provided to necessary platform for Kyle Cameron, Craig Law, Josh Pervan, and Alex Tsaknis to weave their

considerable magic.

As I have said, the forwards were up against it on Saturday but they found all the heart and will to prevail. They were

united in their efforts and each one gave their very best. They were simply superb.

Year 10 REPORT

There was something just a little bit different when I arrived to dress the field for the all- important return fixture

against Guildford. Gone was the normal cheerful banter, no more the slamming of a car door and the sprint to join the

throng by a slightly late player for the warm up because they were all there muted, tense and energised – God help

Guildford because we had come to play!

There was no need to mention that they had played wonderful rugby during the first half of the opening encounter at

Guildford early in the season only to squander their lead to endure the long bus ride home having snatched defeat

from certain victory. They knew that a second half fade out was not an option. Despite a last minute positional change

due to Will Godwin being unable to shake off the flu the team began the game against their undefeated and fancied

opponents. Guilfordians tend to be pretty big blokes on the whole and this team had some very big blokes and we

knew that their game plan would be to bash their way over the line. The opening encounters were vigorous and Hale

had the best of it pinning Guildford in their own half. The pack was relishing the opportunity to drive forward and the

backs constantly crossed the gain line only to fall agonisingly short. The first scrum set the scene for the rest of the

morning as the double blues pushed their significantly bigger opponents all over the park winning a massive 15 tight

heads. Not surprisingly constant pressure from the forwards set the backs loose and Josh Billington eventually strolled

over under the posts for first blood. Chris Lewis added the cream and we were away at the 13 minute mark. Despite

hitting a speed bump two minutes later when we gifted Guildford an intercept try, the boys were relentlessly stamping

their authority on the game and Jason Callow dived over the stripe off the ruck to give Chris Lewis the opportunity to

open up a good lead just on half time.

The boys might have thought they had done enough to put a smile on coach Dallman’s dial at lemons but he demand-

ed more team discipline, a better execution of the game plan and more commitment. The boys left the huddle with the

words “Get on with it or get out of the way” ringing in their ears as six desperate reserves awaited their turn. We were

set for a cracker!

The pack continued to massacre the Guildford forwards in the set pieces and stood toe to toe with them as they tried

to crash their way through. No fade out here as the team played champagne rugby. Chris Lewis popped over a penalty

and Tom Ingram sliced through to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Guildford rallied late in the game to get one back

only to be broken on the wheel as the “Mean machine” bounced straight back for first gamer Nick McLaughlin to slide

in at the corner. Game over.

Next week Christ Church – payback time.

It’s always exciting stepping onto the bus, knowing that you have a substantial amount of time to get a good sleep on

the way to the rugby. Guildford was the destination as Mr Kenny “rested his eyes” for majority of the trip the rest of us

were wide awake taking in the scenery, on what seemed like the other side of the world. Coming off a tight hard game

against Aquinas College the boys needed to be alert and ready to go from the first whistle.

The first whistle came roughly two and half minutes after stepping off the bus so the boys were thrown straight in the

game after what can only be described as a brief warm up. We struggled for the first five to ten minutes as some of the

boys were yet to realise we had started the game. Guildford had possession on the back of penalties that were amaz-

ingly seen by the referee from a distance of up to 20m. Once the boys in blue had weathered the storm the boys found

themselves hot on attack and a period of great forward retention lead to Jan De Wall crossing the line for the first of

his double for day. The conversion was successful from David Lees and the boys were now on top.

The first try seemed to wake the boys up and from here on they showed signs of teamwork and very impressive run-

ning lines to constantly break the defensive line, Randall Glasfurd was constantly getting over the advantage line all

game long, and was rewarded with a superb try coming from tightly played rugby around the ruck. Nick Peters was

next on the scoreboard with a great try as result of some slick hand skills to put him a position to run through the full

back and over, adding another 5 points to the tally.

After a short time were our defence was tested, and the boys really did step up to the challenge of making critical tack-

les at times leading from the front was Arrik Fisk making crucial tackles helped by the constant loud voice on the field

coming from who else then Michael Ninkov, he talked all day and kept the boys going and it was great to see. Michael

Tartaglia is a tireless worker around the field never stopping to even take a breath during game play. It was good to see

him rewarded for his efforts as he found himself in space and took complete advantage of it to score pretty much on

pole pads. With David adding another 2 points we found ourselves 24 nil up. Liam Strickland ran hard the whole game

and his efforts to break tackles are great to watch from the sideline, he used this skill in getting over the line to extend

the Hale lead. David Lees added the 2 and we found ourselves in the thirties. Super sub Nick Langton came on and al-

most immediately found saw himself running through a gap from roughly 15 metres out and placing the ball under the

poles to make the kick easier for David who was again successful with adding the extras as he has been all season. Rag-

ing Jan De Wall found himself with 2 meat pies for the game as he uses his size extremely well in and around the rucks

during the game he constantly breaks through tough attempts to stop and well deserved his two tries to cap off an out-

standing performance along with the rest of the team in blue. Well done Boys.

Year 8 REPORT

Following the bye last week, the mighty 8As put on their game face for the battle with the Guildford Giants this week. With two key backs, Nick Jooste and Austin Shepherd injured, and two more spreading the reputation of Hale rugby in other parts of the world, the task was always going to be challenging, especially in the knowledge that the Giants had put 40 points on Aquinas the previous week. However, with Lewis Weston controlling the mid-field and Daniel White-hurst moving out one place from scrum half, the team took to the field ready to rumble.

After 3 minutes, the scorers had been stirred into action as the team conundrum, Antoine Nguyen, converted pressure into points. Strong running, swift passing and a grubber kick into touch by Antoine when I told him I never, ever want-ed him to kick the ball, gave the team field position. From the ensuing restart, Antoine shot down the short side to dot the ball over the line. All was forgiven for the earlier kick!! The try gave the team the confidence needed to take on the mountain men. For the next 20 minutes, the game moved between the 22m lines. Eric Fear and Antoine were having mighty games at the breakdown, while Lewis Weston was providing many opportunities to Finlay Lamond out wide. Daniel Whitehurst was gaining in confidence at No 10 and Michael Cohen found space in the midfield on more than one occasion. It was turnover ball ‘gifted’ to the Guildford team that enabled them to counter-attack with interest all too often. It was then left to the defence to scramble and keep the Giants at bay. Royce Clark ‘suitcased’ one Giant with a belter of a tackle while Tim Hodge and Sam Hermans held tight up the centre. Dennis Liptrot again marshalled his scrum to pinch tight heads at regular intervals. Just before the break, ‘Rolls’ caught a wayward clearing kick and charged at the gaps in the Guildford defence, going all the way to give the home team a 12-0 advantage at the break.

Two points were emphasised in the huddle: ball retention and defence. The team had to focus on these key phases of the game if they were to stay on top.

5 minutes into the second half, their power men got going and one rampaged through our flimsy defence to open their account. The Mosquito fleet of Hayden Stockley-Smith and Richard Cook swapped positions and gave their best. Henry Evans assumed the fullback role and made a try-saver in front of the vocal crowd. Luca Tizzano assumed the speed-hump position in front of one of their big fellows and it worked well as the Giant came crashing down on the 22m. More pressure at lineout and scrum time from Antoine forced the Giants on the back foot once more and from a quick tap Lewis Weston crashed over to give Hale a 19-7 lead.

Rather than lie down, the Giants flexed their muscles and charged forward. Hale defenders were discarded as a big dog shakes to shed its fleas. With two minutes to go, they crashed over to come within 5 points. It was if the sundial had broken when the referee thought he would entertain the crowd just a moment longer and utter the phrase no coach of the team in front wants to hear: “one more play, gentlemen”. From the kick-off, the Hale team desperately tried to shut down the Guildford surge. Three phases, four, five, a breakout and a touchdown wide out. 19 all with the kick to come. It went wide resulting in a draw between two gallant sides. For Guildford that ends their season; for Hale, one more game against ‘Church next week.

See you on the sidelines down Mt Claremont way.

The convoy rolled to a halt at the Pavilion and disgorged a myriad of travellers; amongst which was a brooding Year 7 rugby team. The Hale team was on the brink of an undefeated season. It was going to be a tough contest. The oppor-tunity to achieve such a distinguished feat was to be hard won. The Guildford band wagon seemed up for a big week-end and the old coach, nervous as always, drew the team together and quoted Springsteen: “thunder’s rollin down the racks, you know where you’re going and you won’t be back”. That didn’t work so he tried Alan Jones’ “missed oppor-tunity” lines to the 1984 Grand Slam team: nope! So, back to “let’s work hard together again”. The team politely acknowledged the obvious, graciously smiled at the old coach, and, set to work dismantling a good Guildford side.

At half time we had scored 29 unanswered points, which the old coach believed represented some of the finest rugby we had played this season. Guildford had some starch in their defence, make no mistake. However, instead of taking affront at the temerity of a side actually seeking to tackle us, we increased our speed and intensity and ran in numbers, to support out team mates. It was a mature, disciplined and efficient playing style that any side would be proud to be able to sustain. Harry Webster was having his best game of the season and consistently tested the defence with no-nonsense straight running or wonderful support play out wide. A class performance. There were many highlights throughout the game with Alex Forsyth and Tim Purdon running superbly. Josh May, Roman Olins-Miller and Xander Clapin all made significant gains with the ball in hand or worked over the Guildford boys at the breakdown. Three standout tries to the big men were remarkable indeed. Max Dunbar, Sam Bowland and Angus Mackintosh all ran over 30 metres, yes 30 metres, at three different stages of the game to score wonderful tries. We lost James Corlett to a serious injury and we wish him a speedy recovery. Next week the final fixture is against Christ Church at Mt Claremont playing fields. We have the rare opportunity to achieve an undefeated season. Ignoring my previous unsuccessful attempt, I again quote the few sensible words Alan Jones has ever spoken; what can be achieved next Friday afternoon “is a rare opportunity and we must remember that there are things that cannot be retrieved or undone; the spent ar-row- the spoken word – the missed opportunity”.

Well done men!

Best: Harry Webster, Alex Forsyth, Tim Purdon and Max Dunbar.
