Bialik, 39, played a young Bette Midler in Beaches, starred in the
early ’90s sitcom Blossom and for four seasons has played Sheldon
Cooper’s whip-smart girlfriend, Amy Farrah Fowler, on the CBS
comedy The Big Bang Theory, airing Thursday nights.
How is Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper)
as an acting partner? “He’s fantastic. He’s very professional. He gives a lot
of room for trying new things. He’s very meticulous, which I am as well, so that’s great.”You have a doctorate in neuroscience. Does it make playing Amy easier? “It makes
memorizing some of the harder terminology easier.”
Is it true that you unwind by cleaning? “I clean my own toilets and change the cat litter. I was part of the Holistic Moms Network before I was back on TV and I
learned a lot of cleaning tips from them. It exists to exchange information about ways to keep your family clean, healthy and safe without using chemicals.” You wrote Mayim’s Vegan Table, a vegan cookbook. Do you stick to it? “I’m not super-strict. We all have our moments when we just break down and get our kids french fries because it’s easier.” What do you like to do when you’re not working? “I’m not really a hobby person. I work a lot and I’m with my kids a lot. I like hiking. I’m pretty domestic. I like sewing. I just took up Mahjong and I’m very musical; I play piano and bass guitar. I just started learning harmonica.”

Q: I was just listening to Brian Wilson’s new album,
which made me wonder: Does he have a favorite song of
all the songs he’s written? —Dianne C., Dana Point, Calif.
A: Wilson’s all-time favorite songs from his impres-sive Beach Boys catalog are “Good Vibrations” and “California Girls.” He
picked those two, he says, because “recording them was quite an experience.” His new album, No Pier Pressure, pays homage to the rich, layered harmo-nies Wilson, 72, and his fellow Beach Boys (Dennis and Carl Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine) created in the 1960s.

The famous Brokaw luck has carried the NBC
special correspondent through an adventurous life
and a cancer diagnosis.
T OM

BROKAW'S
At 75, journalist Tom Brokaw has had more adventures than most people rack up in several lifetimes. Name any major political igure or world leader of the last ive decades, and it’s likely Brokaw has interviewed the person and probably gone hunting or ishing with him or her too. he South Dakota native has traveled to all seven continents, written six best-selling books, won every major award in broadcast journalism and received the Presidential Med-al of Freedom. And he’s been married for 52 years to the love of his life, Meredith, with whom he has three daughters and ive grand-children—all in all, a pretty lucky guy.
But, as Brokaw writes in his new book, A Lucky Life Interrupted (Random House), “The conceit of a long, lucky life is that bad things happen to others.” Which is true— until they happen to you. In August 2013, Brokaw was diagnosed with multiple myelo-ma, a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow. After months of treatment his cancer is in remission, and his luck, he says, holds steady. Cancer has changed his life, but the ele-ments that forged a lifetime of good fortune remain the same. In an interview with Parade, Brokaw explained the lessons behind the phe-nomenon his friends call “Brokaw’s lucky star.”

CIRCUMSTANCES “I’ve been lucky from my earliest memory on. I happened to be born to the right parents, and the lives we led—working class, migratory—suited my personality. I had an adventurous mindset and we lived on an Army base, then in South Dakota—it was a dynamic environment. hen I moved to Yankton, where I could get a job at the radio station and play ball and do all the things I wanted to do.”
MISTAKES “he other side of luck is if you think of it as a gift that never goes away, you can abuse it. I did when I was 19, 20 [1959-1960]. I was a college dropout, hitchhiking across the Midwest.hat was part of the old, adventurous spirit. My parents were anxious about how I was going to turn out. But I look back and see that was the Brokaw luck because I learned a big, painful lesson about how easy it is to fail. It also brought Meredith and me together because she wrote me the hardest possible letter you can imagine, about ‘you’re going nowhere and I never want to see you again and nobody can understand what the hell is going on with you.’ hat was a wake-up call.”
OPPORTUNITY “Even my blind luck was not entirely blind luck. For example, I was in California working for NBC and they wanted me to move East. I was happy where I was. hen they said, we want you to cover the White House; we don’t know where this Watergate thing is going. And I thought, hat’s the kind of story I could get deeply in-volved in. Well, that’s the greatest political story in the history of America and I was there every day. Being there for the fall of the Berlin Wall [was also lucky]. We had no idea the Wall was going to come down 24 hours after I got there.”
ATTITUDE “I believe you make your own luck. My motto is ‘It’s always a mistake not to go.’ So I jump on the airplane, try new things—sometimes I get in way over my head, but then I think, I’ll work my way out of this somehow. A big part of making your own luck is just charging out of the gate every morning…he thing I love about living in New York is that I never fail to get up in the morning and think, Something adventurous is going to happen today. he energy is operating at full throttle all the time. And if you want to be lucky you’ve got to go out and take advantage of it.”
ADVERSITY “If there’s an oxymoron in American life it’s ‘hum-ble anchorman.’ Cancer has given me a dose of humility. I’m much more empathetic. It’s a club I would rather not have joined, but it is a club. People come up to me quietly on the street and say, ‘Mr. Brokaw, I’m a cancer survivor, too,’ or ‘How you doing?’ Cops will say, ‘You going to be okay?’ hat’s been quite touching, honestly.”
LOVE “[Meredith and I] have been married a long time. his cancer experience has just deepened my awe of her. It’s hard for me to say I love her more. his has deepened our relationship. We’ve always cared about each other a lot, but I so depended on her through this.”
THE BROKAW LUCK
Some luck can’t be con-trolled. You can’t inluence what numbers come up on a winning lottery ticket, the weather on your wedding day or the lowerpot that falls from a window ledge as you’re walking by below. Yet “lucky” people do shape their own fortunes, through strategies that make it more likely good things will
happen to them.Take Melisa
Atkeson of Falls Church, Va., who considers herself a “lucky” person. “Absolutely,” she says. “Every day.” Yet a few years ago, Atkeson had a string of bad luck that would wobble the knees of the most stoic. Her husband, Meade, developed an ill-ness no one could
diagnose. Three weeks later, he left his job of 25 years. Her father died of a heart attack. Several inancial invest-ments nosedived and the couple lost much of their savings. Atkeson was a stay-at-home mom with ive children at the time.
For Atkeson, now 53, shaping her own fortune meant taking a “leap of faith” into a new career as a social worker when she went back to work, even though she had years of experience in the computer industry. It meant following up on a lead during a casual conversation that led to a terriic job a short
commute from home. It meant appreciating that the anxiety that had plagued her much of her life was gone—because terrible things had happened and she had survived them.
Call it serendipity—those moments when things align in wonderful ways you’d never anticipated. “You have to have your eyes open, recognize the unexpected when it happens and take action,” says Dr. Stephann Makri, researcher into serendipity at University College London. Makri de-ines serendipity as when unexpected circumstances and a moment of insight lead to a valuable outcome. Think of Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming, who noticed all the dead bacte-ria around the mold in one of his culture dishes and igured out penicillin.
Open yourself up to ser-endipity and watch your luck improve:
1. PAY ATTENTION Curiosity, alertness, lexibility, cour-age and diligence—they’re traits that prepare you to recognize opportunities and act on them. So are keen powers of observation. Several artists in Makri’s studies practice standing still every day to observe the world around them. Put down your cell phone. Step away from your computer screen. Look around.
2. OPEN YOUR CALENDAR
A hyper-scheduled lifestyle can close you off to seren-dipity. Down time—walking, meditating, staring out the window—allows con-

nections and patterns and ideas to reveal themselves. “Before I started working on serendipity I was very task-driven,” Makri says. “I was not as willing to talk to anyone. Now I make sure I have unstructured time every week, and more opportunities seem to come to me.”
3. INCREASE YOUR ODDS If you try more things, more good things will happen, says Dan Ariely, profes-sor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University and author of Irrationally Yours: On Miss-
ing Socks, Pickup Lines and Other Ex-
istential Puzzles (Harper Perennial). If you try 30 new things, at the end of the year you might count 15 good things that happened to you. But if you wait to try things only when you’re sure of success, you might count just three good things that happened that year, he says.
4. TAKE CHANCES Just as Atkeson took a chance in changing careers at 48, serendipity is more likely to strike if you take risks or go outside your comfort zone—exposing your-self to new people, places, activi-ties and information gives you the chance to make creative connec-tions that lead to serendipity. Ariely went to an art gallery opening and met an artist interested in the social sciences. That connection led to Ariely lecturing on behavioral issues—dishonesty, self-control—while artists created art related to those concepts. The collaboration even led to a new class.
5. LET IT GO Research shows that a genetic variation in the brain makes some people naturally less anxious and better able to forget bad experi-ences, says Richard A. Friedman, clinical psychiatry professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. The “un-lucky” tend to “be data collectors for bad experiences”—remember-ing every detail of negative events and weighing them all equally, so losing out on a great parking spot becomes just as awful as losing your mother’s heirloom diamond ring. —KM

Leading MD warns: Popular vision supplements often fall short
Are you one of the millions of Americans taking an eye health supplement hoping for sharper focus, better night
vision, less eyestrain, and anti-aging protection—but you haven’t “seen” any real difference? There’s a reason.
“Supplement makers must think consumers are blind and can’t clearly see the fraud that exists in store brand supplements,” says leading eye health expert Julian Whitaker, MD. “They make claims of improving vision with nutrients like lutein, but then only give you 5–10 mg, when the clinical studies demand much more.”
Lutein can be a powerful way to
improve macular health, visual acuity,
and glare tolerance, but it’s just one of
over a dozen nutrients that can help
maintain optimal eye health. Others
include bilberry and black currant—
clinically shown to improve the eyes’
ability to adapt from light to dark
within just 30 minutes—zeaxanthin,
beta carotene, taurine, vitamin C, and
herbs like eyebright and schisandra.
“It is critical that you take a
comprehensive vision supplement for
long-term eye health. Your eyes are
far too precious to skimp by taking
a supplement with two or three
ingredients in measly doses. Any eye
health supplement you take should
deliver noticeable results you can SEE!”
says Dr. Whitaker.

Rick Bayless has been instrumental in introducing Americans to authentic Mexican cuisine through his TV shows and Chicago restaurants. In his latest cookbook, More Mexican Everyday (W.W. Norton & Co.), he reveals his secret weapons: deeply avored sauces that are quick to make, easy to keep on hand and sure to transform every dish they touch. This Salsa Negra is the perfect way to add a dash of Mexico to anything you cook on Cinco de Mayo, or any day.
Sweet-Sour Dark Chipotle Seasoning (Salsa Negra)
1. Place the chiles (with canning liquid), molasses, sugar, vinegar and ½ cup water in a blender and process until completely smooth. Scrape into a small saucepan over medium heat.
2. Let the mixture come to a brisk simmer, then turn the heat to medi-um-low and continue simmering, stirring regularly, until the mixture is the consistency of tomato paste, about 30 minutes.
3. Remove from the heat and stir in the soy sauce. If necessary, add water, a splash at a time, until the salsa is the consistency of runny ketchup. Cool, taste, and season with salt if needed.
Keep it: Refrigerate salsa in a tightly covered pint-sized jar, where it will keep for a month or two.
» ¼ cup balsamic vinegar or sweet sherry vinegar
» ¼ cup soy sauce
» 2 (7½-oz) cans chipotle chiles en adobo
» 2 Tbsp molasses
» ¼ cup (packed) dark brown sugar

Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant
Experts attribute the rise
in sea levels to melting
glaciers, ice sheets and
the polar ice caps. But for
100 years, humans have
been pumping water
from the underground
water table. How much
has this contributed to
the rising oceans?
—L.H., Emmaus, Pa.
One team of researchers has reported that the increasing human population and its demands for drinking water, irrigation of crops, etc., could account for as much as 42 percent of the rise, surprising even experts. Much of this water evaporates or runs off into rivers and winds up in the oceans. Also, when water gets warmer, it expands. About half the rise is due to warmer oceans simply occupying more space.
