INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Historical Note (2.7): John T. Nichol received his A.B. degree from Gordon College in
Wenham, MA in 1949. He also received graduate degrees from Boston University and
Harvard University. He joined the Bentley faculty in 1962 and in 1966 was named
Chairman of the History Department. Later that same year, he replaced Edward H.
Pendergast as the school’s Assistant Dean. After a sabbatical with the Institute for History
at the University of Warsaw, Poland he returned to Bentley and was made the school’s
Dean and Academic Vice President in 1971. He served in that role until his retirement in
1985, after which he was named vice president emeritus by the Board of Trustees.
Scope and Content (3.1): The collection consists of office files, subject files, and
correspondence that were created or received by John Nichol. A bulk of the records date
from the 1970s and early 1980s as this was the time during which he served as Bentley’s
Academic Vice President. Below are a few topics that make up the bulk of the records in
the collection, along with keywords that will make it easier to search for their location.
