Covid Guidance while attending classes at Forever Learning Institute Forever Learning will follow all state and local guidelines and mandates regarding Covid precautions. Some of the buildings in which we host classes have specific restrictions for their facilities. As of this writing, Southfield Village requires masks, social distancing, temperature check and 5 questions to be answered. Visitors to the Jewish Federation are required to wear masks and maintain social distancing at all times while in the building. An exception to the mask requirement will be made for small (i.e., 6 or fewer) gatherings in a private room, provided that all participants confirm among themselves that they are vaccinated and are comfortable gathering without masks (note that masks must be worn by such participants whenever they leave that private room). While attending classes at our main campus in the Little Flower Parish Center please adhere to the following protocols.
• Face masks are not required in the Parish Center unless you have not been fully vaccinated.
• Please continue to ensure that hand washing occurs, and hands are sanitized frequently.
• Please cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

• Hand sanitizer stations will be available.
• Classrooms will have Clorox wipes available for use.
• Cleaning staff will provide normal service to the building and will continue to perform enhanced application of sanitizers to touch points.
• No food or drink is to be consumed in the Parish Center. You may bring your own personal water bottle, but please take it with you when you leave.
• Certain restrictions may be adjusted by the local Health Department, CDC, or State, and we will continue to update our policy accordingly.

markets are so impersonal? Is the gap between the
rich and poor expanding and, if so, what should we

Middlemarch
Thomas Parisi, Ph.D.
Location: Howard Park 2
Well, Virginia Woolf said that George Eliot’s
Middlemarch is a novel
written for grownups. I
can say that it is my
favorite novel, one that
I’ve led college students
through a number of times; I am excited this fall to
read it with grownups! It is a novel of startling
insights about the “web of ordinary life” and, in
Eliot’s own words, great sympathetic
understanding, narrated by one of the most
arresting voices I know. Like many novels
published in the 19th century, it was originally
published serially in eight books, and we will read
approximately one of those books each week, with
some time left over to dip into some of her essays
or topics that may emerge. This will be a seminar,
and I will provide discussion questions and some
background. Middlemarch is readily available in
libraries and booksellers in paperback, as well as in
electronic editions. So any edition will do as long as
there are chapter headings, which, as far as I know,
is always the case. For what it’s worth, I’ll be
reading from either a Penguin or Oxford World
Classics edition. Please note that the course will
not meet during the week of November 1, week #8.
Max: 20 Min: 8 10 Sessions
10:00 AM - 11:50 AM
Pastel Basics
Yukako Sakaue

24-color set), pastel paper of Canson Mi-Teintes.
Please bring newspapers and a hand towel to the
class. Copy fee: $2.00, due to instructor at the first
class.
Max: 15 Min: 5 6 Sessions
Volunteer Needed Forever Learning is seeking a volunteer
that can assist the institute and our
instructors with current technology,
particularly while in the classrooms. We
also need assistance in purchasing and
maintaining our office and classroom
computers. If you are interested in

Better?
Douglas Germann, Sr., JD
Location: Southfield Village 2
You and I will stir up a conversation with, or at least
give our profound attention to, people our age 300
years away. Our purpose: can we, with them, get
more human? Yes, it is an impossible task,
straining thinking capacities. Together.
A partial syllabus:
• Are our values, like love, tolerance, and
equality, likely to be important to future
generations?
10
MONDAY
• Can women and men be friends? How
people have learned to start courageous
conversations.
• How might we change conversations in our
families? Workplaces? Congregational and
community places?
• How do we improve our skills at guessing
what others do not say to us (perhaps
because they are not yet born)?
• What questions might stir future
grandparents’ imaginations? What
questions from them would stir ours?
• How people get curious to find what they
were not looking for.
There will be much depth and conversation. While

Investing for Income
Thomas Jacobs
Location: Little Flower 2&3
The purpose of this course is to provide a practical
introduction to income investing. Since the Global
Financial Crisis (GFC) in 2007-2009, the Federal
Reserve has enacted a series of drastic programs
to support the economy through unusually low
interest rates. This has had significant ill effects on
the production of income whether at the individual
level or in those financial institutions dependent
upon it, namely pension funds and insurance
companies. We will begin with an introduction to
these government policies and the implications for
individuals seeking to invest for income. The focus
of the course will be to review the risk, return and
taxation of a variety of income producing
investments beginning with traditional fixed income
government and corporate securities including
bonds, notes, bills and bank certificates of deposit.
We will then introduce the alternatives from
preferred and common stocks to real estate
investment trusts (REITs), master limited
partnerships (MLPs) and foreign securities traded
on US exchanges via American depository receipts
(ADRs). We will also cover forms of ownership
from purchasing individual securities to investing in
funds such as open-end, closed-end and exchange
traded funds (ETFs). Finally, we will conclude with
building a portfolio and pursuing diversification.

memorization or facing different directions. It will be

practiced before being put to music, this class will
keep you moving the entire time. We will also
incorporate some strength training for the upper
torso, core and legs, and a final cool down/stretch.
Please bring a filled water bottle, hand towel, and
hand-held dumbbells if you have any.

Haiku en français - Zoom
Jerry Gloster, M.A.
Location: Zoom
I am far from an expert in haiku in English, much
less in my second language French. I do not intend

write, share, and discuss the haikus that we will be
producing (or attempting to produce) in French. The
purpose of this class is to help expand our French
in more artistic ways and to have fun doing it.

Deacon John Tugman
Location: Zoom
Shared reading and discussion of the Gospels, this
semester Mark and John. We will read the entirety
of each gospel, pausing for discussion after each
chapter, typically covering five or six chapters per

shared reading of each gospel
so that we hear the total story
in a concentrated dose, rather
than just one episode at a time as happens in most
church services. Bring your own Bible, any
translation. Get to know Jesus better, whatever
your current relationship with him. A great way for
someone who does not know the Jesus story well
to be introduced to him. The course focuses on the
story, not religious doctrine; all Christians, non-

Nouns & Adjectives & Other Fun French Stuff -
Zoom
Jerry Gloster, M.A.
Location: Zoom
This class will continue from where we left off last
year. The purpose of this class is to greatly expand
the students’ vocabulary by looking at a variety of
nouns, adjectives, etc. according to themes of
everyday life. In the fall, we will be concentrating on
pronouns and pronoun usage, as well as verb
usage. Emphasis will be on conversational
activities—putting what we learn into conversing
with each other. New students, with a basic
knowledge of French, are welcome to join the class
this fall, even if they were not in the class last
spring.
Our text is: The Ultimate French Review and
Practice by Stillman & Gordon, McGraw-Hill.
Although there are 4 editions, I would highly
suggest getting only the 3rd or 4th eds.
Books can be found at Amazon, depending on
editions, ranging from $3.89 used through $19.40
new + tax + S&H (depending on whether prime or
not—prime items are free S&H.)

series of live, in-class
PowerPoint presentations
and in-class discussions
centered around the book
The Universal Christ by
Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM (First Edition, 2019,
Convergent Books).
Background presentations will sketch out the
physical Universe. Following classes will actively
discuss Rohr’s fundamental questions of the
material and spiritual worlds: What if Christ is a
name for the transcendent within of every “thing” in
the universe? What if Christ is a name for the
immense spaciousness of all true Love? What if
Christ is another name for everything – in its
fullness?
Students are required to purchase a copy of the
book (Hardcover $27 from Barnes and Noble or
Amazon). The course requires little or no prior
scientific knowledge.

distinct ideologies in Italy, Germany, and Spain.

Beginning Origami
Lorenzo Riva
Location: Little Flower 6
Discover the joy of folding origami! This course will
cover simple models, including but not limited to
animals, flowers, decorations, and envelopes; basic
techniques such as rabbit ears, crane folds, bases,
and the beginning of modular pieces and
tessellations; and the language of origami books
and diagrams. Arm yourself with a lot of paper and
enthusiasm and get ready to learn! Creating
origami can improve hand-eye coordination and
spatial/sensorial awareness through touch;
following the steps and recreating them at home
hones your focus and sharpens your memory. All
and all, origami is a relaxing hobby that can be
accompanied by music and conversations with
friends.
Single-sided (one colored side, one white side)
origami paper will be
available in class for
everyone to use. If you want
to practice at home, any
paper in the 60-80 gsm range
will work perfectly - as an
example, printer paper is
usually about 95 gsm, so it's
too thick. The instructor recommends buying the
following pack: "40 Color Origami - 120 Sheets" by
Daiso Japan on Amazon, for roughly $4-$5 per
pack. If unavailable, any other similar products will
suffice, but a word of caution: paper coming in
packs of more than 100-120 sheets will generally
not turn out to be a perfect square, which is very
important. The paper used in class and
recommended for personal use is 5.9 by 5.9 square
inches; in case you want larger paper, the instructor
recommends "Aitoh OG-6 Origami Paper, 100-
Pack" (9.75 by 9.75 square inches) by Aitoh on
Amazon, for roughly $15 per pack. If you have any
questions regarding origami, origami books, paper,
or other course-related topics you can contact the
instructor at [email protected].

Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage
Thomas Labuzienski
Location: Little Flower 2&3
Forever Learning Institute is offering a course about
pilgrimages. This class is for 1) anyone who just
wants to know more about this or any other
pilgrimage, 2) those
interested in either
walking or biking the
Camino Santiago in
Spain, 3) those who
have gone on the
Camino wanting to share
their experiences. This course will review and
discuss the history of the Camino Santiago with
movies, books, photos, videos, Zooms, blogs and
documentaries about the Camino. There will be
conversations about the pilgrimage experience
discussing possible local pilgrimages. We will cover
the how, where, when, who and why of the
pilgrimage. How to live a life of pilgrimage here
and now. The Camino spirituality, transformational
powers, history, culture, food, fitness, packing,
preparation and more will be covered by the
teacher and guest Camino pilgrim speakers from
around the world.
The class facilitator, Tom Labuzienski, completed
the Camino de Santiago with his two oldest sons.
He has walked the Camino alone (but you never
have to be alone on a Camino) and walked with his
youngest son, the Kuman Kodo Camino in Japan
earning the very rare Duo Pilgrim certification.
Labuzienski has led a Forever Learning Camino
course since 2017, helped start a local Chapter of
American Pilgrims on the Camino and serves on
the national board of directors for the Camino
organization. This course promises to be very
interactive. Dozens of students have successfully
walked this pilgrimage across Spain after taking
Tom’s class. There will be several guest speakers
who will also share their unique Camino
experiences and advice.

The Gospel Truth: Knitting Scripture,
Unraveling the Yarn
Chris Miller, M.A.
Location: Little Flower 6
Early Christian art depicts an evangelist taking
dictation from on high --the New Testament--quill in
hand, fingers posed above the vellum manuscript.
While the image remains a comfort to some today,
the modern mind imagines things differently. It sees
human agents and their design behind the
fabrication of this literature, as holy as it might claim
to be. This class will imagine Scripture as, seeking
metaphor, a sweater that came together through a
rich process of deliberation, reflection, and
response to a whole array of earthly concerns. By
tugging at a loose thread at the unraveling sleeve,
we will come to understand the woof and weave of
its design. Readings will be essays derived from
various sources. $5 reading fee.

10:00 AM - 10:50 AM
Human Memory
Marie Blunt, M.Min.
Location: Howard Park 1
How accurate is a witness's memory of a crime?
Do brain training programs work?
And perhaps most pressing…How
can I improve my memory as I age?
The main goal of this course is to
share a basic understanding of the
concepts in human memory and
learning. To achieve this goal, we
will explore concrete techniques for becoming more
productive learners, learn about the ways our
memory can get us into trouble (and what to do
about it), and discuss the philosophical nature of
what it means to live a healthy and meaningful life
with your memory system. No class 10/6/21!

Spirituality and the Earth
Robert Asplund, MS
Location: Little Flower 6
Henry David Thoreau once made the statement
"...in Wildness is the preservation of the World". At
the time he made it, "progress" was encroaching on
his world even as it is in ours today. But today, the
consequences on us and the planet are much
greater. In this course, we will explore the many
forces threatening nature and how spirituality might
be able to lessen the impact of the "lords of profit"
(Mary Oliver's term) on our planet and all of its life
forms. We will also look at what we are doing and
what we will have to do. We humans, who in our
long history, have moved from spirituality to
religion, (or from "Mother Earth" to "God the
Father"), will need to return to a future of spirituality
as a driving force for our actions to effectively affect
the future we must choose.

Watercolor Workshop - Zoom
Dorothy McGovern
Location: Zoom
Prerequisite: Basic Watercolor skills such as setting
up your palette, mixing colors, preparing your
paper, and independently completing a painting.
This class is designed as a sharing workshop. We
will start each class with each of us sharing a
project that we’ve been working on the week
before. We will then move to our focus
topic/technique for the day, which we’ll practice
together. Then we’ll paint a picture using the
skill/technique that we used in the practice time.
For example, if the topic is flowers, we would focus
on painting three or four different flowers - sharing
techniques - and even trying a quick “what can you
paint in 5 minutes” flower watercolor to get the paint
and our creative juices flowing. Then we would
transition into a flower watercolor where we’d all
paint along step-by-step. Each painter is free to add
their own personality into their version of the
watercolor and even suggest alternatives way that
the painting could be accomplished.

Intermediate American Mah Jongg - Zoom
Lynn McDonald, MSN, MSEd
Location: Zoom
Have you taken a Beginning American Mah Jongg
class and been playing by the National Mah Jongg
League rules for at least a year? Are you ready to
do a deeper dive into the game? If so, this is the
class for you! I will cover a different topic in each
session (how to see patterns in the NMJL card,
deciding what to pass in the Charleston, when to
switch hands, playing some of the more challenging
sections of the card, etc.) and will demonstrate
skills by having students watch over my shoulder
while I play, using an online mah jongg site.
Membership to the online sites is not necessary for
the class unless you want to take a turn in the
driver's seat of the game (which will be available to
interested students). As I play, we’ll discuss what
the tiles are telling us and how to employ winning
strategies. Learn new skills that will improve your
game and increase your pleasure in playing. I will
ask for input from students about where to focus.
This class will work well both for those who are
playing mah jongg in person and those who prefer
to play online. Instructor will take one week off in
late September or early October. Supplies needed:
2021 National Mah Jongg League card of hands.

Research on Cognitive Aging ND students seeking feedback on papers This spring, students in Dr. Joshua Koen’s “Cognitive Aging” course at The University of Notre Dame completed a final project in which they were to present an issue in cognitive aging research, with the goal of publishing these short essays specifically for Forever Learning Institute students. These essays are available online as blog posts, as well as in printed form at Forever Learning Institute. The topics of research span a broad range, including the benefits of yoga, types of memory aids for use in aging populations, cultural differences in views of ’successful aging’, how bereavement affects cognition, and much more. These short essays can be found online at https://koenlab.org/category/cogaging-student-blogs/ - a link to which is on the Forever Learning website. Notre Dame students’ welcome feedback from FLI on the short essays. You may submit your comments to [email protected] with the subject line “Student Essay Feedback” for distribution to the individual authors. Consider providing feedback if you found a topic particularly interesting, if there was anything you found confusing, or if you have constructive advice on how the student can grow as a writer for a public audience.
