Summit Report
The Great Rift Valley Mining Summit 2013 (GRVMS) organised by Entico Events opened on
the 17th and 18th April, 2013 and far exceeded all expectations. Having taken place in Dar
es-Salaam, Tanzania at the Kunduchi Beach Hotel we were pleased to see such a diverse and
exciting delegation from government ministers, permanent secretaries, senior dignitaries,
NGOs and funding bodies from eleven countries situated on the Great Rift Valley.
The Great Rift Valley is a name given in the late 19th century by British explorer John Walter
Gregory to the approximately 6,000 kilometres long continuous geographic trench that runs
from northern Syria in Southwest Asia to central Mozambique in South East Africa. Today
though, the term is most often used to refer to the valley of the East African Rift, the
divergent plate boundary which extends from the Afar Triple Junction southward across
Eastern Africa, and is in the process of splitting the African Plate into two new separate
plates. Geologists generally refer to these incipient plates as the Nubian Plate and the Somali
Plate.
The Rift Valley is blessed with an abundance of natural resources and the Great Rift Valley
Mining Summit provided the platform for discussions on the development of these
untapped reserves. The ministers & officials, international agencies & NGOs used the
Summit as an occasion to discuss their aims, challenges and goals, and announced
opportunities, projects & time scales and presented a programme for planned contracts for
2013 and beyond.
Hon. Stephen Masele, the Tanzania Deputy Minister of Energy and Minerals opened the
summit by presenting the unique position his country holds within the mining industry in the
East Africa region.
The next two days saw country presentations from all the nine country delegations present,
including Hon. John BANDE, the Malawi Minister of Mining, Hon. Mukanga YAMFWA, the
Zambia Minister of Mines, Energy and Water Development, Hon. Peter LOKERIS, the Uganda
Minister of State for Energy and Mineral Development and other high level dignitaries.
GRVMS hosted many leading companies from the mining sector including mine owners such
as African Barrick Gold, AngloGold Ashanti, Base Titanium, East African Gold, Kabanga Nickel
Company Ltd., Kasese Cobalt Company Ltd, Kilo Goldmines, Mantra, Maweni Limestone,
Midroc Goldmines Ltd., Mozambique Mining Exploration Company, Peak Resources, PW
Mining International Ltd., Shanta Gold, STAMICO - Tanzania State Mining Corporation,
TanzaniteOne, Tata Steel, Tulawaka Gold, Uranex Ltd., Vedanta Zinc International, Wesizwe
Platinum Ltd., ZCCM – Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd. Investments Holdings as well
as technology providers, such as Software AG (the gold sponsor), Atlas Copco and Warrior
Security International (silver sponsors), Bolloré Africa Logistics Kenya, Civicon Ltd., Danimex
Communication, First Tech Group, IBM Tanzania, MA Attorneys, Panafrican Group of
Companies, Quest Qualitas, RMA Group, SGS Tanzania Superintendence Co. Ltd. and Vivo
Energy (bronze sponsors) and many more.
Entico Corporation Limited, 19 Heddon Street, London, W1B 4BG, United Kingdom
The summit also included keynote presentations from a select number of business
organisations, amongst which Tata Steel, The US Embassy in Tanzania, Africa Finance
Corporation and UN Economic Commission for Africa.
During the afternoons of both the days, the participants gathered around thirty-seven
roundtables for a busy program of one-on-one meetings where business negotiations took
place.
During the evenings of both the days, the participants gathered on the welcoming
beachfront of the Kunduchi Beach Hotel for informal meetings which many of the
participants saw as excellent opportunities for further networking.
A great number of the participants have expressed their satisfaction with both the format
and the content of the summit, highlighting the wealth of information delivered through the
morning plenary speeches and the direct, tangible benefits provided by the afternoon
roundtable meetings.
We sincerely hope that, by bringing international expertise to East Africa, in some small way,
the GRVMS will help these governments develop their economies further and would very
much like to see you again at future Entico Events.

Testimonials
“Many thanks and congratulations to all for a very smoothly-run conference. The roundtable
format is an absolute winner for networking, and all those on hand for Entico keep the thing
hopping along.”
Bryan MECKLENBURGH
Group Commercial, Alfred H. Knight
“For me the round table session was the best. I have attended many summits but have not
had the chance to have such sessions with my potential clients. Thanks and keep it up!”
Evans MABEYA
Business Line Manager, Atlas Copco Tanzania Ltd.
“The organization of the Summit was brilliant and it allowed me to meet the right people
from different organisations in the same place and at the same time. Had I arranged meeting
the same people myself, it would have taken me weeks. See you at the next one.”
Mr. Claus LEVINSEN
Marketing Manager, Balton/Danimex
“I have to commend you guys on a job well done. You guys showed high levels of work ethic
to ensure a resounding success for the delegates and participants. The experience was truly a
memorable one and I have to highlight the following achievements as exceptional
contributors to a job well done:
• The team and their personal approach to the event and proceedings
• The team’s diligence to ensure the participants’ needs were met
• The team’s friendly attitude toward their guests and delegates
• The team’s willingness to assist even in instances not related to the event
In my opinion the networking session is of great importance to us and has also given our
business the necessary exposure we needed, especially in Tanzania. We hope to receive
enquiries and sales from this investment and are already investigating new opportunities
with potential partners in the country.
Keep up the good work and good team spirit as these factors where the main contributors to
the success of the event. I look forward to the pleasure of being part of the next successful
event and wish you all the best of luck in your professional and personal lives.”

“I found the GRV Summit a great source of networking and information gathering regarding
activities in countries and companies in our region. I found the summit worthwhile to attend,
as it gave me the opportunity to know other participants in person, particularly if one thinks
of the people factor in doing business.”
Johan VILJOEN
Managing Director, Nitro Explosives (T) Ltd.
“Personally was more than happy for the job well done by you, to organize such a successful
summit in Africa, in particular Tanzania. It was such an exciting moment to network with
great industry players and learn about gifted wealth that is still lying untapped. My personal
view is that, with appropriate mining policies in respective African countries, the region will
see a boom in mining sector which will soon liberate the appalling state of the economy in
these countries.”
Wandwi Daniel MUGESI
Cargo Services Manager, Swissport Tanzania Ltd.
“Great event, guys! I achieved all my objectives set prior to joining the conference. Key
among them was networking. The attendance was amazing but not surprising given the
preparations you guys had made for this event. One learning point for me is the team work
displayed by the Entico group. Particular appreciation to Andy, whose hands-on approach
ensured that we achieved our objectives. In addition, the summit format was well thought
out and allowed for maximum interactions. Round table was an excellent idea. Keep it up!”
Stephen MUNGUTI
Business Development Manager, Shell & Vivo Lubricants, Kenya Ltd.
“The conference was an excellent initiative and allowed participants to gain a very good feel
for regional developments in the sector. It was well organized, with the roundtable format
allowing for good 1 on 1 interaction with key parties. I would certainly attend again, and look
forward to further conferences.”
Solomon ASAMOAH
Deputy CEO & Chief Investment Officer, Africa Finance Corporation
“The summit served as a one-stop centre for information on mining investment opportunities
in the entire Great Rift Valley region”

mining sector
Tanzania called for more investment in its mining sector as the nation is exploiting only 10
percent of its mineral resources due to low technical capacity for conducting exploration
activities, a senior government official said on Thursday.
Stephen Masele, Deputy Minister for Energy and Minerals, told the Great Rift Valley Mining
Summit that recognizing such a challenge, the government of Tanzania is working hard to
attract foreign investors for harnessing more mineral resources that are yet to be tapped.

The need for having protected mines
Mines need to have proper security systems with credible, capable staff who can protect not
only mines, but also personnel working on site, Warrior Security Ltd, CEO Major Tony Sugden
has said.
Speaking during the Great Rift Valley Mining Summit held today in Dar es Salaam, Sudgen said,
“Mines and their subcontractors are often the only truly meaningful commercial entity in their
areas of operation,” said Maj. Sugden. “This makes them stand out like shining beacons, with
