What are Data Centers? The data center is the nerve center, or the control room, for any organization.
Data centers also consume more energy than any other area of the bank because they contain both IT equipment and the infrastructure that's needed to cool that equipment to optimal temperatures.
In its August 2007 report, the Environmental Protection Agency stated that energy consumption of servers and data centers has doubled in the past five years and is expected to almost double again in the next five years.
Reported issues about data center Servers and desktop PC’s remain fully powered on nights.
Carbon dioxide emissions generated by cooling
Amount of electricity needed to power and cool the data center makes it one of the costliest aspects of an it department
Inefficient and expensive cooling methods
Data center produces 0.3% of the world’s CO2 emissions and is increasing
What is green IT?
The concept of green IT emerged in 1992 when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched Energy Star, a voluntary labeling program that helps organizations save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by identifying products that offer superior energy efficiency.
Green it refers to the idea that it organizations can and should implement practices that are environmentally friendly.
Other components of green IT include the redesign of data centers.
What are Green Data Centers? A green data center is a repository for the storage, management, and dissemination of data in which
the mechanical, lighting, electrical and computer systems are designed for maximum energy efficiency and minimum environmental impact.

Managing the increasing cost of the energy The cost of a kilowatt of electricity is constantly rising. With the growing demand for less
expensive and more powerful high-performance computer clusters, the problem is not just paying for the computers but also determining whether the budget is available to pay for power and cooling.
Running out of power capacity Some companies cannot deploy more servers because additional electrical power is not
available. The effort to overcome a power supply threshold is a huge investment.Running out of cooling capacity The cooling facilities are not adapted to the present needs. Traditional cooling methods
allowed for 2-3 kW of cooling per rack. Today’s requirements are 20-30 kW per rack.Running out of space Space utilization is growing exponentially because of business requirements. When servers
and storage cannot be added, except by building another data center, this growth becomes expensive.
Why Green Data Centre?
How to Calculate PUE
PUE = TFP/IEP TFP=Total Facility Power |IEP=IT Equipment Power First we need to take the TFP, which is measured at the utility meter entering the data
center. This measurement includes all the internal components like CRAC units, chillers, UPS, PDUs, security features, lighting and monitoring equipment required to provide service to the IT equipment load.
Then measure the IT equipment load. This measurement is determined after all switching and conditioning is performed. The most reliable way to do this is at the power distribution units which should be the total power sent to the racks in the colocation facility.
The average data center has a PUE of 2.0 to 2.5. Based on this calculation, one can assume that if a data center has a PUE of 2.0 that for every watt used of IT power, the data center uses an additional watt to cool the site and send power to the IT equipment.

Green Data Centers - Challenges
The data center market is due to grow rapidly over the next 5 years. However power security remains a significant risk stemming from the lack of diversity of energy imports & increasing reliance on thermal power and oil import.
Power availability and reliability is one of the major factors which are left unattended, which will lead to disastrous result on data centers and its growth.
The prime reasons for data centers to be under the scrutiny from energy agencies is because they are extremely energy intensive.
Apart from catering the energy intensive equipments, availability of a data center calls for continuous and reliable power supply.
Power availability & reliability Increased cost of operationsData centers faces power outages everyday and are forced to look at other means of power. Diesel generators are the most favored option for house power generations. With increasing oil cost, the cost of running data centers with diesel generators also increase exponentially.
Difficulties in expansion of operationsMost of the data centers start their operations before the completion of the construction of the building. They operate only a part of the data center space with capacity utilization being only 30 to 40 percent. Their contract power demand would be based on their part operation. During their course of time, as they complete the construction activities and as their data center gets filled up, energy demand goes from high to cater to the new space. The expansion activities call for a higher contract demand.
Increased capital costAvailability is the major concern for any datacenter operator, due to power issues data center operators had to install additional equipments to maintain reliability. Most of the data centers operate with 2 or 3 sets of UPS systems. The main reasons for installing more than 2 sets of UPS systems is the concern over power availability. If the power from grid is reliable, one set of UPS system can be avoided there by reducing the capital investment. The same holds good for diesel generators and other back up system.
