Copa del Rey

Gareth Bale delivers his magical moment for Real MadridValencia, Apr 17: Gareth Bale filled the void left by the injured Cristiano Ronaldo, sealing Real Madrid's 19th Copa del Rey title with a late goal in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Barcelona.

Ronaldo's extra-time play gave Madrid the 2011 Copa del Rey title at Barcelona's expense. In his absence Wednesday, Bale scored in the 85th minute, his first goal in three ''clasico'' matches, to make sure Madrid repeated the feat. Angel Di Maria scored Madrid's opener from a counterattack in the 11th minute, capitalising on a Bar-celona lineup that seemed to lack ideas in attack and was slow to recover in defense.

Defender Marc Bartra equalised against the run of play in the 67th by heading in from a corner kick to ruin goalkeeper Iker Casillas' record run of not conceding in this edition of the tourna-ment. The goal appeared to energise Barcelona, spark-ing Lionel Messi into action and ensuring the last 15 min-utes became a frenetic back-and-forth contest.

But with the game hang-ing in the balance, Bale got the winner when he sprinted down the left side of the pitch, even running out of bounds to avoid Bartra, before racing into the area and rolling the ball under goalkeeper Jose Pinto.

Barcelona, however, still had one last chance, only for Neymar's shot to hit the upright in the 90th. Neymar's

last-gasp effort almost ''scared us to death,'' Casillas said. ''Fortune was on our side, and we are thankful for it.''

Ronaldo joined his team-mates to celebrate with their fans on the pitch before the team filed past King Juan Carlos to receive their medals and the prized trophy.

The plane carrying the Spanish monarch had tech-

nical problems that delayed take-off, but he arrived on time to watch the match along with more than 50,000 spec-tators divided into large sec-tions of white and blue-and-burgundy club colors.

After failing to win the cup competition between 1993 and 2011, Madrid has won it twice in the last four years.

Monte Carlo, Apr 17: Top seed Rafael Nadal finished with a clean ace on match point to seal his 300th career victory on clay and advance into the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters on Thursday.

The eight-time winner here became just the 11th man to crack 300 wins on the dirt: the last to do so was Spaniard Carlos Moya in 2007.

Nadal began his formidable run on the surface with his first clay win in 2002 and has not looked back since. At the top of the all-time table in the victory category is Argentine Guillernmo Vilas, who ended his career standing 644-183 on the surface.

Spaniard Nadal had a few spots of bother against Italy's Seppi, with the world number one forced to save five break points in the sixth game of the opening set for a 5-1 lead. In the second set, Nadal dropped serve

to love while leading 4-2. But he got it straight back for 5-3 and finished off the victory in 93 minutes.

Second seed and holder Novak Djokovic, who beat Nadal for the 2013 title, was facing Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta while fourth seed Roger Federer

was to play Czech Lukas Rosol.Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka earned a free

trip into the last eight when Spain's Nicolas Almagro retired before their third-round match with a foot injury.

Australian Open winner Wawrinka, seeded third, will Friday face off against Canadian eighth seed Milos Raonic, who beat 11th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robre-do 6-4, 6-3. Wawrinka has beaten Raonic in both of their previous meetings, in 2012 and 2013 on hardcourt.

Monte Carlo, Apr 17: Indian Davis Cupper Rohan Bopan-na and his partner Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi lost only three games against Lukas Kubot and Robert Lindstedt before advancing to the quarterfi-nals of the ATP Monte Carlo Rolex Masters. The unseeded Indo-Pak pair scored a domi-

nant 6-3, 6-0 win over the seventh seed Polish-Swede combo in just 54 minutes in the second round contest of the euro 3,452,415 elite clay

court tournament.Bopanna and Qureshi

fired five aces as against one by their rivals and converted five of the nine chances apart from saving two on their own serves. They will next face third seeded pair of Croatia's Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo from Brazil. PTI

BCCI convenes Working Committee meet on Apr 20Mumbai, Apr 17: Heeding to the demands of some affiliated State units, BCCI has decided to convene an Emergent Work-ing Committee meeting in Mumbai on April 20 to take stock of the developments relating to the case before the Supreme Court regarding the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal.

“BCCI Working Committee meeting has been convened on April 20 in Mumbai,” BCCI’s vice president Ravi Savant told PTI from Dubai where the first phase of the seventh edition of IPL commenced on Wednesday.

The meeting, scheduled at 3 p.m., comes in the wake of Supreme Court making it clear yesterday that N. Srinivasan cannot head BCCI till he comes out clean in a probe conducted against him and 12 others, including India-capped cricketers whose names have been mentioned by the Justice Mudgal Committee report in the IPL betting and spot fixing scandal.

At least six affiliated State units, including Rajasthan Cricket Association, had sought an emergent Working Com-mittee meeting of the BCCI on Sunday to discuss matters related to the Supreme Court case. PTI

Yusuf flies home to be with wife, baby boyNew Delhi, Apr 17: Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Yusuf Pathan flew back toIndia shortly after the teams' thumping win against MumbaiIndians in the IPL opener after the news of his wife delivering their first baby reached the UAE.

Yusuf, 31, is likely to miss KKR's second match against DelhiDaredevils but the hard-hitting batsman is expected to return by the third game, confirmed a team official.

Sent into bat at No.5 with just a couple of overs remaining in the innings, Yusuf remained unbeaten on 4. He didn't get to bowl. Yusuf's brother Irfan, who is with Sunrisers Hyder-abad, tweeted as a proud uncle on Thursday: @IrfanPathan Alrightttt this is great no words can Describe the feeling. My bro Yusuf n Bhabhi blessed with baby boy I'm CHACHU now.Ya rab Tera Shukar hai. Dropped catch by me cost MI the game: MalingaDubai, Apr 17: He shone with the ball with a four-wicket haul but Mumbai Indians' pacer Lasith Malinga feels responsible for the team's IPL loss to Kolkata Knight Riders, saying that a dropped catch by him cost the defending champions dearly.

Mumbai lost by 41 runs in the IPL opener last night after Manish Pandey and Jacques Kallis' 50s helped KKR post a fine total of 163 on the board.

"We bowled really well in the first 10 overs, but let them off the hook after that. We let Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey build a very large partnership and then they had a couple of really big overs. What really cost us the game was the catch I dropped of Kallis when he was on 34," Malinga candidly admitted in an interview to the IPL's official website. PTI
