Professor Chris O’NeilHead of Gray’s School of Art
Welcome to Gray’s School of Art, in this our 130th year.
Our founder, John Gray, was a local businessman and philanthropist. His vision was to raise the aspiration and profile of Aberdeen’s culture and industry by developing this School. He knew that our students and staff would always be a critical resource for the city and beyond. The health and ambition of the School was linked to the vision of the region and, as that has grown, so have we.
Cultural confidence is key to the city and its international profile. At Gray’s our graduates are at the cutting edge of defining cultural identity. This year’s New Contemporaries exhibition at Edinburgh’s Royal Scottish Academy was dominated by our graduates who join an alumni that has exhibited across the globe. Our own Dr Choong Kam Kow’s one person retrospective at the National Malaysian Art Gallery demonstrates our international reach and our connections.
We don’t just train the best artists, we are also working with Aberdeen City Council to establish design based SMEs and enhance business opportunities using our skills in digital design and manufacture. The work we are doing with our partner Transition Extreme creates opportunities for the city’s youth, and builds upon our reputation as a centre committed to social justice and opportunity. We’re taking on the big issues too. Earlier this year, in an international competition in Shanghai for zero carbon design, our students took four of the eight internationally juried prizes.
Art schools are strange and complicated places. They are places where creativity, lateral thinking and ideas can be resolved in a million and one ways. This is a great School of art whose DNA engenders dynamic and intelligent play. We produce forms of art and design which John Gray would never have predicted – but that wouldn’t have surprised him one bit.
So, congratulations to our graduates and John Gray’s prodigies.

THE HILL OF THE
RED FOX
Allan Campbell McLean
A message from a dead man.
It’s the Cold War. Soviet spies are feared, and secrets are traded. People are disappearing.
Thirteen-year-old Alasdair, from London, knows nothing about spies and secrets. Nobody tells him much about his dead father’s military history, but when he finds out his father left him a croft on the Isle of Skye in his will, he can’t wait to see it.
But nothing is as it seems. On the journey, a stranger slips him a mysterious note before leaping from a moving train. Worse still, he instantly mistrusts Murdo Beaton, the man who has been living in his father’s croft. Most crofters don’t sneak about in the dead of night...
Gradually adjusting to the tough life on Skye, Alasdair is not prepared for the web of danger and espionage that unfolds around him. Can he trust anyone on the island?
