Grace Episcopal Cathedral Topeka, Kansas
September 2018 Vol. 93, No. 9
A Call to Action
Dear Friends,
I want to thank all of
you who responded
to the Vestry's
request to provide
input on what the
mission and goals
for Grace Cathedral should be for the
next several years. The Vestry
received many pages of comments and
suggestions. We are thrilled at the
involvement of the congregation as it
demonstrates a desire to make changes
going forward. It also demonstrates to
an incoming Interim Dean that we are
not sitting back waiting to be shown
how to proceed. Rather, we are
providing Mother Nic our path for the
future and one we want her to help us
achieve.
The next step will be to categorize
the comments (i.e. Adult Education,
Fellowship, and Children's Ministry, to
name a few). Once this work is
complete, copies will be available on
the west side table in the Cathedral, on
the vestry bulletin board (back
hallway), on the Cathedral's website
and in the EChimes.
Now the fun begins! The Vestry
asks that everyone participate by
taking a copy or printing one at home
and then prioritize the comments in
each section numbering the most
important as #1, the second as #2 and
so forth. When completed, we ask that
you drop it off in the office, put it in

the box in the Cathedral, email your
copy to the Cathedral at
mail it to the office. It’s important we
receive this no later than Friday,
September 7.
The Vestry will meet again on
Sunday, September 9, to work
through the priority listing. This
process will provide the Vestry with
the knowledge needed to focus its
efforts on the goals the congregation
deems most important. A new
updated Mission Statement with
goals will be provided based on the
feedback we receive, so it is vital that
each of you participate.
The goals we establish now to
achieve our mission will become the
starting point of our journey as we
work with Mother Nic. The
Cathedral's goals may change as we
travel down the road of transition,
but our mission to provide Christian
growth by sharing the love of God in
Christ through worship, teaching,
fellowship, prayer and service to
others will remain the cornerstone
upon which we build.
Thank you.

ADULT FORUM The Adult Forum will be held in All Saints Hall
September 9-30
The Book of Hebrews — The Book of Hebrews, commonly known as the
Letter to the Hebrews, is probably the most profound book written in the New
Testament period, and one of the most difficult for modern readers to
understand. It has been described as a “delight for someone who enjoys
puzzles.” Bring your Bibles, and be prepared to drink from a fire hose, as
Pastor George explores the wonders of this book.
October 7-28
Faith, Facts and Fords — “Jim’s car is a Ford.” Is this an objective claim or
a subjective claim? It is clearly objective. Jim’s car is either a Ford or it is
not. “Jim’s Ford is a cool (hip) car.” This second claim is subjective because
it depends on what each of us considers “hip” or “cool.”
Now, park Jim’s car for a moment and ask yourself: Is your faith and
belief in God, Christianity and your choice to express that faith in the
Episcopal community based on objective or subjective experiences? If
objective, why do so many people believe and worship so differently? (or not
at all?) If subjective, does it make any real difference what you believe or
how you worship, or does sincerity make all spiritual paths equal?
This Adult Forum with Steven Roth will explore these questions in the
context of three world religions– Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. Compare
and contrast these faith communities to those of Christianity and your own
experiences.
SUNDAY SCHOOL begins September 9 9:30-10:15 a.m. for all ages

Some exciting things are planned for this school year!
Director of Children’s Ministries hired We are pleased to announce the return of Kathy
Smith to our children’s Sunday School program!
After conducting interviews, a search committee
comprised of vestry members, Cathedral parents, and
a staff member voted to recommend Kathy to the full
vestry for approval as interim Director of Children’s
Ministries until a permanent dean is in place. Kathy
previously worked for several years as the
Cathedral’s Children’s Sunday School Director.
A special thank you to all who applied for the
position. The selection committee had some well qualified candidates to
choose from.
Come make music and have a ringing
good time! We are looking for several
motivated individuals to join our handbell
ensembles. Previous experience is not
necessary, but certainly welcome. If you
haven’t played handbells before, now is a
great time to give them a try!
We are having two Handbell
Discovery Sessions for new bell players
on Wednesdays, September 5 and 12,
6:30 - 7:15 p.m. If you are unsure about
playing, come to an easy, laid-back
session on bell ringing basics!
Grace Cathedral currently has two
ensembles, both of which rehearse on
Wednesday evenings. If you come to a
Discovery Session and are completely
new to bell playing, our beginning/intermediate group rehearses Wednesdays,
6:30-7:30 p.m. If you are an experienced ringer, or accomplished musician,
and are interested in playing more difficult music, our more advanced group
meets Wednesdays, 5:30-6:30 p.m. We are especially looking for a few players
who can manage the bigger bass bells, but all new ringers are welcome.
If you have questions, are interested in playing, email Handbell Director
Forrest Evans at [email protected], call (785) 213-1847, or just attend
one of the Discovery Sessions.

Youth trip to Worlds of Fun The Grace Cathedral and St. David’s youth teamed up for a trip to Worlds of Fun on August 11. The trip included 23
youth and 7 adults. The youth used money they had raised selling popcorn and baked goods, and washing cars to help
pay for the trip. Thank you for your help and support, making these events a possibility for the youth in our
congregations.
Sympathies Sympathies of the parish go out to Reeta Akins on the death of her son, Bruce. May his soul, and the souls of all the
faithful departed, rest in peace.
About the window…
St. James the Lesser provides our Epistle readings for the month of September. The stained glass window on this month’s cover featuring St. James the Lesser is among the windows in the Cathedral’s Chancel depicting the first Disciples called by Jesus.
For several weeks we've had a crew of 4 men from Mid-Continental
Restoration from Fort Scott, Kansas, working on the Cathedral’s exterior
limestone. The process has involved power washing, using a strong detergent
where needed, and applying sealer. They also repaired some damaged stones
in several locations. Now that the project is complete, we will fill in a few low
spots where the machinery sunk in the lawn.
This process is recommended every 8-10 years to keep our building clean
and in good condition for withstanding Kansas weather patterns.
