GMHA StAff BoArd of directorS GMHA is putting the finishing touches on another successful year, as I write this - my sixth and final letter for the Annual Report. An un-usual set of circumstances led to my quick rise to Board President and the opportunity to hire a new executive director. We were very fortunate to hire Tracy Ostler; the stability that she has brought to GMHA is nothing short of remarkable. Our over-all financial position is the best it has ever been and the events are well attended with many seeing increases even as other venues are struggling. Our standing in the local community is strong and, with the creation of our Landowner Relations Committee, we are reaching out to improve upon what Tracy has started. That is the good news. The bad news is that Tracy has decided to move on to a new opportunity. We thank her for all the hard work and dedication that she has provided GMHA these past five years.
Luckily for GMHA, we had a tremendous replace-ment for Tracy already working for the organiza-tion. Bruce Perry will be moving from his current position as Grounds Manager and Assistant Direc-tor to the Executive Director position. Bruce has been working for GMHA for the last six years and has learned the myriad details that go into hosting a successful event. Bruce’s background with other nonprofits and land conservation organizations position him well to continue the great work that is already underway at GMHA. Bruce has been involved with horses most of his life and though his background is in eventing, he understands that GMHA is a five discipline venue and strives to provide a great experience for all of our visitors. I am excited to have him coming on board and look forward to him having many successful years with the organization.
Of course, GMHA is more than just the people at the top, and Tracy has assembled a top notch staff in the office. Many were new to their posi-tions this past spring, but everyone has stepped up to the challenge of managing well run events. My own experiences on the grounds at numerous events this summer has been very positive. I expect that events will only get better as our staff contin-ues to learn and improve.
No president’s letter is complete without thanking the dozens of volunteers that generously donate their time each year to help GMHA host suc-cessful events. The success of GMHA depends greatly on this support, and we truly couldn’t do it without you. That being said, we are always looking for more volunteers. Through a generous donation from business member Dark Horse Chocolates, we were able to provide bags of their fabulous chocolates throughout the year. Some events even offer special gifts for the volunteers, from t-shirts to GMHA logo’d coasters, there are many incentives to volunteer. There is also a program in place that rewards regular volunteers based on their hours of service and a special award
for volunteer and junior volunteer of the year. If you are already volunteering, we thank you! If not, please give it a try. It is a great way to learn about the various disciplines at GMHA and make new friends. My volunteering experiences have always been positive, and I look forward to having more time to volunteer now that I am leaving the Board of Directors.
I would once again ask that all members consider supporting GMHA through donations or planned giving. The Silver Stirrup Legacy Society recog-nizes donors that make a provision for GMHA in their estate planning. There are many ways to do this, and those that are interested can contact Bruce Perry for more information. GMHA uses the services of Morgan Stanley, and they would be happy to discuss options or we can work with your own financial team. Either way you will be making the choice to secure the long term success and financial stability of the organization.
My thanks go out to the many people who have helped me during the last six years. I’m sure Dana Waters never imagined the circumstances that would arise when he asked if I was interested in joining the board. Great folks like Jill Helmer and Liz Gesler were very supportive as we navigated the process of choosing a new Executive Director. Ray Johnson, Scott Monahan, and Carole Hunt-er have all helped me throughout my term on the board as well. GMHA is blessed with many members that understand the history and impor-tance of the organization. It has been my pleasure to serve as President of the Board, and I look forward to being an active member, volunteer, and competitor in the years to come.

I have truly enjoyed working at GMHA. The best part of working here is the people. That includes the members, the competitors, the board of directors and most of all the staff.
The GMHA staff is small, but mighty. Everyone pitches in to make sure the work gets done and the comradery is real. These guys give up almost their entire (short Vermont) summer to host events for fellow equestrians. Please remem-ber to give them a smile as you ride by, because none of this could happen without them.
And, this place couldn’t be what it is today without you. Looking back over the past five seasons, I’m amazed at what we’ve accomplished. With your help and support we have completed some major grounds projects including:• Purchasing the Rush Meadow Ring• Replacing the Upwey Barn roof and painting the shed
row barn rooves• Upgrading many of the buildings and facilities• Renovating the Members Room (one of my favorite
projects)We also grew the endowment to just over $2 million, helping to secure GMHA’s future.
As the Executive Director, I have:• Attended somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 eques-
trian events• Met hundreds of new people• Helped inventory thousands of ribbons• Made hundreds of pots of coffee• And parked nearly one million cars, trucks and trailers
Working here has been educational, intense, rewarding and most of all – fun! Thank you for the opportunity to serve as GMHA’s Executive Director.

Work Completed April 2019 flood recovery: GMHA was hit with
a severe flooding event that caused our brook to flood the fields, re-locate the foot bridges, leaving silt, rocks, and cobbles across the grounds. With the hard work of GMHA’s grounds crew, staff, and Randy Perry, we were able to slowly open for business, with the full grounds available in time for the June Horse Trials.
New sound system in barns & arenas
 New energy-efficient lights in A & B Barns
“Squeaky” the Water Truck underwent major repairs & maintenance
New lease on golf carts & UTV’s
Ongoing improvements to cross-country jumps, stadium jumps, and driving obstacles
Each arena has new European Geo-Textile footing added every 3 years
Silver Stirrup Legacy Society
The Silver Stirrup Legacy Society get together was once again hosted by GMHA board member, Shirley Fenner. About 20 people attended the gathering at Shirley’s Gambol Hill Farm.
This year we are pleased to induct our newest Silver Stirrup member, Amy Bresky. Amy is a true supporter of GMHA. She is a member of the board, a donor, a competitor, a volunteer and now a Silver
Stirrup member. Thank you Amy, for making a gift that will help sustain the future of GMHA.
The Silver Stirrup Legacy Society was created to recognize the special people – like you – who understand that GMHA is a unique and precious resource. Donors become Silver Stirrup Legacy Society members by pledging their long-term support via a planned gift. These gifts are used to grow
GMHA’s endowment. The endowment provides the annual income used to support the upkeep of the property and the needs of the organization. A robust endowment provides security for the future of GMHA and its mission.

The Cummings Trail in Hartland and the Trail of the Bloodhound in West Windsor got some much needed trail tread restoration after a long, wet winter and spring.
Volunteers donated machine time along with labor. We are so thankful.
The ice storms and wet weather in early 2019 brought down more than the usual bumper crop of deadfall. It’s a good thing we had a re-cord number of trail maintenance volunteers!
Two organized work days in the spring got us off to a good start.
We worked with the Vermont 100 Trail Crew to clear and repair many trails that we share this spring.
Special Thanks to
Birch Hill Farmfor their continued generosity in
allowing us the use of their land& supporting our young rider awards.

The Skywalker Trail in West Windsor (above) is a cooperative effort made up of 3 landowners, neighbors and the local snowmobile club. This important trail will receive improved drainage in wet and steep sections.
We partnered with the Town of West Windsor to correct some longstanding drainage issues on Barton Road in West Windsor – an import-ant Class 4 road. By minimizing culverts and installing armored ditches, we reduce the need for expensive repairs in the future.
The Cady Brook Trail is owned by the Town of Hartland. This 2-mile trail connects Hartland to Woodstock. The trail has long-standing drainage issues which we have worked to patch with other partners for decades. It is time to take more perma-nent measures or we risk losing the trail. We have been partner-ing with the Ottauquechee Natural Resources District and the Town to gather the permits and grant funding necessary to fix 2 water crossings and one area undermined by beaver activity.
To Our 814 GMHA Members:
Thank you for being a member and ensuring GMHA will continue to exist for generations to come and will continue to preserve this land and our important legacy in the equestrian community.
