Is science of any value? I think a power to do something is of value. Whether the result is a good thing or a bad
thing depends on how it is used, but the power is a value. I learned a way of expressing this common human problem on a trip to Honolulu. In a
Buddhist temple there, the man in charge explained a little bit about the Buddhist
religion for tourists, and then ended his talk by telling them he had something to say to
them that they would never forget – and I have never forgotten it. It was a proverb of the
Buddhist religion:
‘To every man is given the key to the gates of heaven; the same key opens the gates of
hell.’ Dr. Richard Phillips Feynman
So is science!

R Descartes explained,
Latin: "Non posse à nobis dubitari, quin existamus dum dubitamus: at que hoc esse
primum quod ordine philosophando cognoscimus."
English: "That we cannot doubt of our existence while we doubt, and that this is the first
knowledge we acquire when we philosophize in order."
The proposition is sometimes given as dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum. This fuller form was
penned by the eloquent French literary critic, Antoine Léonard Thomas, in an award-
winning 1765 essay in praise of Descartes, where it appeared as "Puisque je doute, je
pense; puisque je pense, j'existe." In English, this is "Since I doubt, I think; since I think I
exist"; with rearrangement and compaction, "I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am",
or in Latin, "dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum".
A further expansion, dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum—res cogi s ("…—a thinking thing")
extends the cogito with Descartes's statement in the subsequent Meditation, "I am a
thinking (conscious) thing, that is, a being who doubts, affirms, denies, knows a few
objec s, d is ig or of m …". is s bee referred o s " e expanded cogito".

the physical world turned metaphysical when confronted with questions of theology; it
led him to a contemplation of the nature of existence and the mind-body duality,
identifying the point of contact for the body with the soul at the pineal gland. It also led
him to define the idea of dualism: matter meeting non-matter. Because his previous
philosophical system had given man the tools to define knowledge of what is true, this
concept led to controversy. Fortunately, Descartes himself had also invented
methodological skepticism, or Cartesian doubt, thus making philosophers of us all.”

things that you do not understand. Now, when you finally discover how something works,
you get some laws which you're taking away from God; you don't need him anymore. But
you need him for the other mysteries. So therefore you leave him to create the universe
because we haven't figured that out yet; you need him for understanding those things
which you don't believe the laws will explain, such as consciousness, or why you only live
to a certain length of time — life and death — stuff like that. God is always associated
with those things that you do not understand. Therefore I don't think that the laws can be
considered to be like God because they have been figured out.”

If, in some cataclysm, all of scientific knowledge were to be destroyed, and only one
sentence passed on to the next generation of creatures, what statement would contain the
most information in the fewest words? I believe it is the atomic hypothesis (or the atomic
fact, or whatever you wish to call it) that all things are made of atoms — little particles
that move around in perpetual motion, attracting each other when they are a little
distance apart, but repelling upon being squeezed into one another. In that one sentence,
you will see, there is an enormous amount of information about the world, if just a little

Each piece, or part, of the whole of nature is always merely an approximation to the
complete truth, or the complete truth so far as we know it. In fact, everything we know is
only some kind of approximation, because we know that we do not know all the laws as
yet. Therefore, things must be learned only to be unlearned again or, more likely, to be
correc ed. … e es of ll knowledge is experiment. Experiment is the sole judge of

The first way in which science is of value is familiar to everyone. It is that scientific
knowledge enables us to do all kinds of things and to make all kinds of things. Of course,
if we make good things, it is not only to the credit of science; it is also to the credit of the
moral choice which led us to good work. Scientific knowledge is an enabling power to do
either good or bad -- but it does not carry instructions on how to use it. Such power has
evident value -- even though the power may be negated by what one does.
I learned a way of expressing this common human problem on a trip to Honolulu. In a
Buddhist temple, there, the man in charge explained a little bit about the Buddhist
religion for tourists, and then ended his talk by telling them he had something to say to
them that they would never forget -- and I have never forgotten it. It was a proverb of the
Buddhist religion:
"To every man is given the key to the gates of heaven; the same key opens the gates of
hell." http://alexpetrov.com/memes/sci/value.html
