Wi-Fi andcellulararethetwomostsuccessfulwirelesstechnologies inexistenceandhavecomplementedeachotherforyears.Nowtheyseemtobegettingengaged.Anditcouldn’tcomeatabettertimeasdemandforwirelesscapacityisatanalltimehigh.Combiningthesetechnologiesoffersgreatpromisefortheentireindustry. Buthowtheycometogetherremainsabigquestion.Avarietyofdifferentapproaches toWi-Fi/cellularconvergencearebeingconsideredbyvariousindustry groups.Astheseworldscollide,understanding thedistinctions betweenthesedifferentapproaches isimportant,realizingthatthere’snorightorwronganswer,justdifferentchoices.TheconvergenceofWi-FiandLTEsmallcelltechnologywillplayoutovertheremainderofthedecade.Theendresultwillbetoenableanalwaysbest-connectedexperiencefortheuser.LTE-U,LAA-LTE,LWA,multi-link TCPandMuLTEfirearealloptions forconvergingthesetwogreatradiotechnologies andthereareothersaswell.ThefuturelooksbrightforcarriergradeWi-Fi technologyandLTEsmallcells.
