PlanningiswellunderwayforourSpringVendors’Daymeeting,whichwillbeattheGTRIConferenceCenteronApril26.Itpromisestobeanotherexcellentmeetingincludingpossiblysomenewvendors,OSHAandAIHAupdatesfromCindyCoe(ourLocalSectionAIHABoardCoordinatorandRegionalAdministratorforOSHARegionIV),part2oftheNoiseControlEngineeringwebinar,andmuch
more.Welookforwardtoseeingyouthere! Wearealsoliningupasummer½-daymeetingonEthics,whichwillbeheldonMonday,July26.Asyouprobablyareaware,thereisanewABIHrequirementforCIHsthatonceper5-yearcertificationcycleatleast0.33CMpointsaccruedwithinCategory4(AttendanceatEducationalPrograms)mustbeinethics.Thissummerprogramwillmeetthatrequirement. Inthesetougheconomictimes,nearlyeveryorganizationhashadtofigureoutwaystodomorewithless.Thatsaid,however,GLSisverygratefultobetherecipientofgeneroushospitalityaffordedbyGTRI,DeltaAirlines,andGAPower,allofwhomhaveprovidedushigh-techmeetingspaceatnocharge.Wethanktheseorganizationsfortheircontinuedsupport.This,alongwiththeenergeticandcreativeleadershipofourLocalSectionBoardandourloyalmembership,hasallowedustomaintainavery
stablebudget.Asaresult,wecanplantocontinuetoenhanceouralreadypopularprogramstomakeyourparticipationevenmoreenjoyableandrewarding.ArecentexamplewasbeingabletoofferMikeHarris’award-winningPDConweldinghealthandsafetylastfallatapricelessthanathirdofwhatyouwouldpaytoattendthePDCatAIHce.Thatthiswasawell-receivedeventwasconfirmedbytherecordnumberofattendeesandpositivefeedback. Iencourageyoualltobecomemoreactiveinourprofessionatthelocaland/ornationallevel.Stayingconnected,current,andcredibleareessentialtoourpersonalandprofessionalsuccesses,especiallyinthesedynamicandchallengingtimes.AIHAoffersmembersmanyopportunitiestohoneourvaluedskills,bothtechnicalandorganizational,andtogrowandtogiveback,bothpersonallyandprofessionally.Thisultimately (continued on page 6)

GLS AIHA’s Support of CEFGA a Success Thisyear,GLSAIHAintroduceditsnewestmember“GeRTI”tothepublicatthe2010CareerExpoandSkillsUSAStateChampionships.“GeRTI”isanewmemberofthe“DangerousDecibelsMannequin”familythatwasbuiltbyGLSandoutfittedwithasoundlevelmeter.Shewasdevelopedfollowingthemodelpresentedinthe“JoleneCookbook”inordertoeducatethepublicaboutthedangersoflisteningtomusiconiPodsorotherpersonalstereosystemstooloudly.StudentspassingthroughtheWorldofSafetyandHealthhadtheopportunitytosticktheirearbudsinGeRTI’seartoseejusthowloudtheirmusicwasastheylistenedtoGLS-AIHA
volunteersexplainthesignificanceofnoise-inducedhearinglossandtinnitus.Levelswereoftenabove90decibelsandevenfrequentlyexceeded115 dBA.“GeRTI”willbeattendingthenextGLSmeetingandisavailableforGLSmemberstouseduringtrainingsessions. TheCareerExpoandSkillsUSAStateChampionshipswereanexcellentvenuefor“GeRTI”tobeintroducedtotheworld,with6,499attendeesfortheeventfillingthe150,000squarefeetspaceontheGeorgiaInternationalConventionCenter’smainexhibitionhall.The2010CareerExpoandSkillsUSAStateChampionshipswereorganizedbyCEFGA—theConstructionEducation

OSHAisproposingtoreviseitsOccupationalInjuryandIllnessRecordingandReporting(Recordkeeping)regulationtorestoreacolumntotheOSHA300Logthatemployerswouldusetorecordwork-relatedmusculoskeletaldisorders(MSD).The2001RecordkeepingfinalregulationincludedanMSDcolumn,buttherequirementwasdeletedbeforetheregulationbecameeffective.ThisproposedrulewouldrequireemployerstoplaceacheckmarkintheMSDcolumn,insteadofthecolumntheycurrentlymark,ifacaseisanMSDthatmeetsthe

OSHAstatesthat,afterthoroughlyreviewingthecommentsandotherinformationavailableintherecordfortheproposedrulemaking,OSHAconcludesthattherevisedPortaCount[supreg]quantitativefit-testingprotocolsarenotsufficientlyaccurateorreliabletoincludeamongthequantitativefittestslistedinPartIIofAppendixAof
itsRespiratoryProtectionStandard.Therefore,OSHAiswithdrawingtheproposedrulewithoutprejudice,andisinvitingresubmissionoftherevisedprotocolsafterdevelopersoftheprotocolsaddresstheissuesdescribedinthisnotice.TheproposedrulemakingiswithdrawnasofJanuary27,2010.
