The St. George Festival will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18 and 19 for the second time at St. George Orthodox Christian Church, 10748 E. 116th St. in Fishers. The church sponsored the Middle Eastern Festival for 17 years at its prior location in Indianapolis, and the newly revamped festival builds on that Middle Eastern heritage, offering many popular features of previous events.
"We’re still celebrating our Middle Eastern roots, but at the same time, we’re expanding the format," explains Brad Tirey, festival director. "In the past, it’s been just food, drinks and dance. We are adding other activities, demonstrations, cultural events and more attractions for youth, including hot air balloons and a carnival area."
Why change the name of the festival? Parish priest Father Nabil Hanna says, "We want to honor the various other traditions of all the people who have joined and make up St. George today. We are extremely diverse. We have people of backgrounds from many countries across the world."
What’s different about this festival? "Two things," says Father Nabil. "One is that it’s at our new location on 116th Street with a new Byzantine temple and beautiful iconography. The Indianapolis Star called it ‘the number one thing to see or do in Fishers this summer.’ We are inviting everybody to come and celebrate with us."
Tours will explain the church’s unique architecture, as well as iconography
that was recently installed by renowned iconographer Dr. George Kordis of the University of Athens, Greece.
"Secondly, we are trying to make the festival a little more interactive; not to just come, buy food and sit down with music playing in the background. You are able to move around, see different things, different demonstrations, try out different things while you are here," explains Father Nabil.
What’s going to be the same as previous festivals? "Fantastic food, live entertainment and all of the welcoming people of St. George who want our guests to see what we’re about," says Tirey. "We hope to continue the spirit of hospitality for which we have become known."

ABOUT ST. GEORGE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHURCH
St. George Orthodox Church was established in 1926 and ministers to Orthodox Christians of a great diversity of backgrounds. It is a parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. After worshipping together for more than 50 years at its prior location on Sherman Drive, the parish purchased land in Fishers and built a new Byzantine-style church building. St. George’s congregation began worshipping in their new facilities in November 2013 and held the official door opening ceremony in May 2014.

GETTING A KICK OUT OF GUNS
Tim’s Shooting Academy of Westfield is where it’s at if you want to channel your inner tough-guy…or just hone in on your shooting skills!
It’s a family-owned indoor shooting range focused on safety and education, making it one of the BEST ranges in the state. Owner Tim Tomich and his knowledgable and friendly staff care very much about the entire customer experience. From novices to expert shooters, all feel welcome!
They also operate a full-service firearms store staffed with experts to help you "safely and confidently enjoy your sport." Everything you’ll need is available, including ammunition, personal eye and ear protection and targets. Of course, they also have a nice variety of guns and rifles for rent to anyone over 21. Our experience was no less than fantastic!
While inexperience doesn’t matter here, safety certainly does. In fact, Tim’s #1 priority is safety, starting with a short video for all shooters on gun safety and rules of the range. Range Safety Officers (RSOs) are always present to assist and answer all questions or concerns.
There are classes for beginners, women and expert shooters, including private lessons which are highly recommended for all first-timers. Why? Because while Tim’s has beginning basic pistols classes, sitting in a classroom with up to 15 people of little experience might be a little overwhelming, and private lessons allow you to advance at your own pace and comfort level. Sounds like just our speed!
Eager to begin, your Girls About Town headed to the classroom for the eight minute video presentation where we learned all about firearm safety and the Golden Rules of the NRA*.
We were educated as well on the use of the oh-so-important command, cease fire! When a cease fire is called out, all shooters must stop immediately, keeping their firearm pointed down range, finger off the trigger and await further commands.
12 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2015 / atGeist.com
Anyone may call a cease fire if you’re ever concerned about a safety compromise of any kind. Completing our safety class earned us our Orientation Card and access to their high-tech rifle and handgun indoor range.
Next up, getting fitted for a pistol! Adriane, one of their many NRA certified instructors, helped us choose a gun to shoot from Tim’s large selection of rentals. We both finally settled on the most popular handgun in the U.S…a Glock! We then had to select what ammunition to shoot for our levels. 9mm ammunition seemed just right, so we put on our ear and eye protective wear and headed out to the 15 indoor shooting lanes.
We were pretty impressed with the range, including the state-of-the-art ventilation and containment systems designed for comfort and, you guessed it, shooter safety! We learned a lot in a short amount of time, including how to properly hold the pistol, load and unload the ammunition, set our
target distance, shooting etiquette and sight alignment.
We have to admit we were pretty nervous at this point….Time to pull the trigger! AND WE DID…e v e r s o g e n t l y! Both of our first shots landed in the bullseye range!
Ladies!!! The recoil on our pistols wasn’t bad at all!! Do not let your fear of the unknown stop you from experiencing this!! No one will be watching you, except the RSOs to ensure you are all safe! It was AWESOME, not to mention EMPOWERING!!! Having never shot a handgun, it was exhilarating to finally experience the thrill of shooting a pistol! We turned our fear into a great respect for guns! What a kick!! Bucket list #10 DONE!!!
Many thanks to Tim and all his staff at Tim’s Shooting Academy of Westfield! We had so much fun! They offer annual individual and family memberships that are super affordable. Our kids have already asked to go shooting. Why not?! We had a BLAST!
*While the NRA calls gun range etiquette "a blend of common sense, courtesy and safety," there are Golden safety rules of the National Rifle Association:
q Always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction.
w Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
e Do not load the gun until you are ready to operate it.
r Know your target and beyond.
Find information on pricing and classes at TimsShootingAcademy.com or on Facebook at Tim’s Shooting Academy of Westfield.

"Game Day Coffee is about going to your local coffee shop or sitting in the comfort of your own home to talk to your children about how they are really doing," says Todd Melloh, founder of Game Day Coffee.
"It’s about going deeper with questions/topics rather than how the Colts are doing. It’s about asking them questions such as ‘How can I be a better dad? How’s your walk with Christ? Is there anything you need to tell me?"
Melloh recollects his meaningful childhood memories when he says, "While growing up, my dad and I would play hooky from work and school so we could hang out together. We would catch a baseball game, go to the movies, hit some balls together or just be together on what we called ‘our day.’ It was so special. I had my dad to myself."
Sadly, Melloh says that the majority of the men that he has met have had a bad relationship with their dads.
"I’m amazed. My heart bleeds for them. I wept many times as I listened to their stories. I began thinking if I were born into their shoes what my life would’ve been like."
Melloh was raised in a family with four boys just as he himself is

coincidentally doing today. He wanted to create this same special tradition with his four sons beginning with his eldest, Luke, the starting quarterback for Noblesville High School.
Last August, Melloh says he felt God wanted him to meet with Luke every Friday morning before he strapped on his helmet. That’s when he came up with the idea of Game Day Coffee.
"Little did I know that my dad’s idea would be a life-changer for many men 35 years later," says Melloh. "Fittingly, the first Game Day Coffee was held on my mom and dad’s 50th wedding anniversary. I was overwhelmed with emotion."
Initially, many did not identify with the importance of this program that has since become contagious. Melloh contacted all five Hamilton County 6A football coaches (Noblesville, Carmel, Westfield, Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers) to ask them to bring their players in jerseys and their dads to fellowship together before battling on the field. This Playoff Prayer Breakfast was so successful and had over 400 people in attendance.
Jeff Saturday plans to help further promote Game Day Coffee by speaking to ESPN radio and newspaper sources to grow this program nationally. Also he will share Game Day Coffee with
his 14-year-old son and two other children on, you guessed it, a Saturday. He will invite the media to get a photo and post it on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to help spread the word and challenge other dads to do it as well. The hope is for everyone to share their stories on social media.
"I hope that men who read this article will accept my challenge to have Game Day Coffee with their child. It’s not too complicated. You wake up an hour earlier once a week for three months to show how much your children mean to you," says Melloh.
On October 23, the Playoff Prayer Breakfast will be held in multiple locations throughout Indiana for dads to share the incredible stories that they experienced with their kids during the football season.
He adds, "I look forward to hearing about what God has accomplished in your lives. Please share your stories and photos with me at [email protected] or call me at 317-417-3525. God bless."

THE PLACE TO BEWriter / Lisa Kitchen Butt Photographer / Keeley Miller
"I want people to say the place to be is Casler’s Kitchen and Bar," says Randy De John, managing partner for the Fishers restaurant located on the southeast corner of 116th Street and Olio Road. Bringing together sports watching, good food and fan camaraderie is the goal of this family-owned business.
Sports watching starts and stops here…at least for the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana University basketball. With 51 TVs, Casler’s is the fans’ choice for watching all sports and eating a reasonably priced meal.
A cornerstone of the Fishers community since April 2006, Casler’s was built on family. Rick Fonseca took over ownership in late 2009 and has not looked back. De John, managing partner since 2009, embraces and engages all that is Casler’s.
"Success comes from my partnership with the owner, Rick, and myself. I make sure I match what he wants, combined with my own ideas," De John says.
For those locals looking for a fun night out on Friday and Saturday nights, Casler’s provides local and out-of-state talent such as Clayton Anderson with Allen Lane Band.
"We go out of our way to find bands you’ve never seen here in central Indiana. Our goal is to provide great service, great food and a great dining experience that you can’t get anywhere else," De John added.
What makes Casler’s different than other sports-themed restaurants in Fishers and neighboring areas?
"We change with the times, and we change with each sporting season. From July to September, we have action focused on football and then IU basketball from November to March. Secondly, we have
some wonderful acts coming in on Friday and Saturday nights to entertain our guests. Lastly, we treat every customer as if they were our own family," said De John.
On NFL football Sunday, fans throw footballs through a hoop, and Casler’s provides prizes such as NFL jerseys, Weber grills, free drinks, iPads and local gift cards. During IU basketball games, Hoosier faithful shoot free throws for prizes. And during every game, "The Star-Spangled Banner" is sung at half-time, adding to the non-stop entertainment and enthusiasm.
De John is no novice to running a successful restaurant. With 21 years in the restaurant business, he has a proven track record of growing a loyal following which is evident at Casler’s.
Casler’s provides 30 taps, 21 different wines and a wide and varied menu to tempt your culinary tastes.
Bringing the family to Casler’s but concerned about a toddler and kid-friendly menu? No worries. Casler’s features a family-friendly area complete with a kid-friendly menu including mini-corn dogs, Kraft mac and cheese and kid’s salad and yogurt cups. There are even gluten-free items for any young person to choose from.
For the adult audience, 60 new items have been added to the menu, including pasta, steak, soups and salads.
A new late night menu helps the night owl diners stay satisfied. The main menu also includes sandwiches and wraps, burgers, flatbreads, paninis, pizza and desserts. Interested in something to share before the kick-off? How about Redneck Nachos, Gyro Sliders, Filet Sliders, Chicken Chipotle, Bacon Spinach or a wide array of salads.
However, never forget Casler’s is there until the last customer wants to leave. "We do not close until the game is over."
That is service.

THE HAWTHORNSWine Club
Writer / Kara Reibel Photographer / Jim Martin
The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club launched a new Wine Club in July, meeting the third Wednesday of every month, and is open to all members, not just their wine locker members.
The theme for August was South American gems. Six wines were presented by a sommelier who shared the regional history and origin of each ingredient inside the bottles. The Wine Club evenings include a dinner buffet.
"I love wine, but it’s the education about the wine that I enjoy," shares member Jim Martin. "It’s also seeing neighbors and friends and enjoying a lovely evening."
"The Club is seeing some exciting changes," shares Beverage Specialist Michelle Collins. "In addition to the Wine Club, we hope to add a Draft Beer Club once the Player’s Lounge reopens."
The renovations are currently underway, increasing the seating at the bar from nine seats to 20, and a draft beer system with six to eight beers is being installed featuring all local craft beers. The Player’s Lounge upgrade is part of a $1.2 million capital improvement campaign.
Other changes will include a new drink list and new wines.
The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club was recently purchased by Concert Golf Partners which now owns private golf clubs and resorts across the country. The Hawthorns is proud to have joined their exclusive family.

You might say it was a case of being in the right place at the right time, but during a recent stroll to see what’s new at The Depot at Nickel Plate along 116th St. in Fishers, we peaked into the new Yogurtz and heard, "Welcome! We just opened for the very first time!"
It was their soft opening on July 15, and my 18-year-old daughter Lexi Miller and I were their very first customers! As fans of frozen yogurt, we were ready to give it a try!
The inside décor is clean and colorful with pink and lime green tiled walls and white modular seating. The back wall features a variety of flavors including traditional strawberry and chocolate to a salted caramel pretzel flavor and NSA (no sugar added) vanilla. The center of the room is filled with every topping imaginable!
Lexi swirled together coconut and chocolate topped with brownie bites, and I tried my new favorite – gluten free, fat free watermelon sorbet!
Lexi says she gives the new yogurt shop a big thumbs up! "I know it’s brand new, but it just tastes so fresh, and the variety of toppings to choose from is great!"
Owner/Manager Micky Virdi says that’s exactly what they are going for.
"We want to offer fresh frozen yogurt with four new flavors each week and a topping bar that the customer knows they can find just about anything they want!"
The "family-owned, self-serve frozen yogurt spot" also sells take home containers of yogurt and plans to be open to private parties and community events.
Yogurtz’s grand opening was slated for Saturday, July 25 in the spot just down from Brixx restaurant and next to the new Dottie Couture Boutique in the new Fishers Marketplace.

Northside Indy families have a great new option when it comes to first-learning experiences for their little ones. Geist Kids Academy, a faith-based premier preschool nestled on 10 acres in the heart of Geist’s Admiral’s Bay subdivision, arrived on the scene less than 30 days ago, and area families are already flocking to register their children for the top-notch preparatory curriculum.
The preschool operates as a licensed ministry of Geist Chapel and is another facet of the church’s continued commitment to the Geist community. The preparatory academy program is geared for children 6-12 years of age. The school’s atmosphere and well-rounded curriculum are designed to address the needs of the whole child (educational, emotional and spiritual). The highly experienced staff want families to be able to think of the academy as a home away from home, a cozy sanctuary for learning, making friends and being valued as individual.
The loving staff aims to make each day special for your child through well-thought-out age-appropriate lesson plans including interactive play, exploration, STEM-based activities, early reading/writing experiences, sensory and discovery, creative arts, dramatic play, music and many other fun activities. Successes are celebrated, fun is encouraged and birthdays are always significant.
Some of our favorite features of the new Geist Kids Academy include:
• The nautical theme throughout – a great fit for the Geist area!• Children 3 and up rotate between three classrooms each day –
language arts, creative arts and science/technology/dramatic play.• The curriculum includes virtual flights where students virtually
visit other countries to explore the tastes, music and cultural.• Healthy snacks and lunches, made from scratch, are provided
daily from an on-site chef.• Teachers are CDA certified, have early childhood education
degrees or a minimum of 5 years of experience. We were impressed

masthead neighbors fight

back
Masthead resident Hank Dragoo was watching his back yard wash away after every rain and decided to do something about it. The result was a LARE grant from the State of Indiana and eight cooperative neighbors funding an erosion control project behind their homes.
30 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2015 / atGeist.com
, Geist resident Hank Dragoo noticed slight erosion in the creek that ran through his backyard in Masthead. Four years later, the erosion has grown to a degree that has eliminated the usage of boat docks, uprooted 100-year-old trees and exposed pipelines.
"We had a major water event nearly four years ago, and water and soil came out at that time," said Dragoo. "It has progressively been getting substantially worse. With each heavy rain, we get more and more sediment washing down. Once it starts to loosen the soil, it opens the floodgates."
Sediment has built up along the creek progressively over the years, spilling out into the cove and blocking access to the water. The severe erosion and run-off has destroyed yards, foliage, wildlife and water quality.
"What we want to do is remove all the sediment that has built up in the cove and take it off-site or use it as available resources to build a grade-stabilization structure," said Dragoo. "We will build grade-stabilization

structures all up the ravine to slow the velocity and erosion and solve the problem."
Dragoo contacted numerous government entities and found help in state and federal agencies set up to provide assistance for issues such as his own. He applied for a grant from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) with sponsorship from the Geist Harbours Property Owners Association and was awarded a $35,000 grant from the DNR for the project. One of the requirements of awarded grants is a 20 percent minimum match by the recipients, which was fully supported by the nine homeowners whose homes line the ravine. Construction for the project is set to begin this month if everything goes to plan.
"The Geist Coalition has been very helpful along with the Geist Harbours Property Owners Association. Both of them understand the importance of this work," said Dragoo. "It takes a unified front. Without those groups and the support of homeowners, none of this could happen."
The danger of not addressing the problem is large – the erosion has undercut trees along the creek to the point of the trees almost falling into homes. In just a couple of years, water has eroded the edges of the ravine to expose roots.
"If the problem is not addressed now, it will lead to even more damage. We are talking about four-foot-wide trees that will make a big impact if they go."
Despite the large degree of the erosion and amount of sediment in the cove, this same issue exists all along Geist.
"This situation is not unique along the reservoir," emphasized Dragoo. "It is an issue that everyone who is concerned with water quality, wildlife, planting and conservancy has to be faced with. Identifying the problem and finding out how to best solve it is to present it to the right agencies."
Dragoo urges other homeowners facing similar issues to stand up and seek a solution.
"There is inspiration and empowerment to be had for those who want to seek that change. It is possible to orchestrate
homeowners on a unified front to solve problems like this that don’t seem to have a solution."

BUILDING DREAMS AND BREAKING DOWN BARRIERSWriter / Janelle Morrison
DREAM Alive, founded by Tarik and Maya Glenn, is an Indianapolis-based 501(C)(3) that exists to equip urban youth in grades 7-12 to become civic-minded leaders. They do this by providing their scholars with three key opportunities: mentoring relationships, character development and experiential learning. The end product is a group of young men and women of integrity and character who are confident, skilled and willing to serve their community.
DREAM Alive serves approximately 784 students. Glenn used his celebrity as a former member of the Indianapolis Colts to influence and mentor the next generation of leaders. Glenn officially became president of DREAM Alive in late 2011 and works tirelessly for DREAM Alive to provide hands-on leadership.
“My wife Maya and I utilized the platform
that I had while I played for the Colts to create DREAM Alive,” Glenn explained. “One of the things that inspired us was that we wanted to give back to the inner-city communities and create something where we could give back together. Maya was a public health major and received her masters in public health at IUPUI. I was a social welfare major, and we both benefited from community outreach programs.
“We both benefited from the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) programs for inner city youth, and I went to a Boys and Girls Club. We are both products of inner city programs, and we feel that they gave us access to places that we would not have naturally had access to.
“When we had the first opportunity to provide services for communities that were underrepresented, we acted on it. One of the strategies that we focus on is how to raise necessary funds and awareness to
build our nonprofit and be competitive. We strive to find ways to stand out and still provide unique services.
“One of our strategies is to develop and maintain strong corporate sponsorships that are looking to reach and assist communities that really are underserved. Companies like Bastian Solutions, American Structurepoint and the Indianapolis Colts organization have stepped in and offered not only financial contributions, but we will open up their businesses and give our scholars access with experiential learning trips where the students will learn about different jobs and job skills that are available to them. This allows our kids to dream beyond their circumstances.”
Support from the local businesses is essential in sustaining organizations like DREAM Alive, and the business partners that support DREAM Alive engage because they share a philosophy with the

organization that the community’s youth is a community’s future. For example, Bastian Solutions will hire students from within the DREAM Alive program and place them in jobs within their corporation.
In addition to the business community’s support, the DREAM Alive organization recognizes the importance of having positive mentors on board to work with and help raise up their scholars.
Dwayne Allen, Player Executive for DREAM Alive, has stepped into a leadership role within the organization to assist with Glenn’s mission. Allen, tight end for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, is making an impact in the lives of Indianapolis at-risk youth. Allen serves not only as the professional face of the organization but also participates in program development and implementation.
“I grew up in the inner city of Fayetteville, North Carolina,” Allen said. “My story resonates so well with the children that we impact at DREAM Alive. I spend every opportunity that I get to spend with our kids. I see so much of myself in each and every one of them. I didn’t have anyone to look up to or have someone who looked like me, who came from similar situations as me, trying to inspire me. That is why I am passionate about wanting the kids to want more in their lives.
“I want them to understand that regardless of where you come from, how you were raised or who you were raised by, you can’t allow your circumstances to dictate who you who are or who you want to be. That’s what our mission is all about. We educate the kids and provide resources and knowledge, so that they can go and be successful in their lives.”
Allen will host the annual Wishing on Stars benefit on Monday, September 14
at Sullivan’s Steakhouse in Indianapolis. An annual event since 2004, Wishing on Stars was first hosted by former Indianapolis Colts Tight End Marcus Pollard. Fellow Colts players, Indiana Pacers, Indy 500 drivers and other local celebrities are expected to attend the event.
The evening will feature a cocktail reception, followed by celebrity introductions, dinner and a silent and live auction. The players and other celebrities are willing to sign autographs, serve cocktails, personalize voicemails, perform guests’ favorite songs and spend time with attendees in a relaxed, enjoyable private environment of 150-200 guests.

is most costly to the businesses and is most cherished by DREAM Alive is the organization’s time.
“By them opening their doors to our programs so that we can take the kids to different businesses around Indianapolis and around the state, we can expose the kids to things outside of the inner city. Little by little, this begins to break down the barriers of their world. We take them for walks around university campuses or to a business like WTHR or a military base to expose them,so that they can begin to dream bigger.
“As we continue to grow and obtain more funding, we can expand our reach and develop a model that is replicable in cities throughout the country. Our goal is to replicate the programs in all NFL host cities and team up with players from those teams who will then engage their local school corporations.
“Here in Indianapolis, we want to expand in all IPS schools and surrounding areas, so that we can serve the underserved and fill in the gaps, so that no child falls in between. We want to see all children have opportunities to resources that they need to become successful adults. Ultimately, that is how it should be.”

Wishing on Stars is by invitation only or purchased ticket. Tables for the event are available for purchase in denominations between $3,000 and $5,000. Individual tickets can be purchased for $500.

In addition to Allen, numerous fellow Colts players are expected to attend. Past attendees include Glenn, Pat McAfee, Tamika Catchings, Anthony Castanzo, T.Y. Hilton, Coby Fleener, Matt Hasselbeck, Dallas Clark, Peyton Manning, David Thornton, Jeff Saturday, Ken Dilger, Roy Hibbert, Reggie Wayne, Marcus Pollard, Bob Sanders, Joseph Addai, Gary Brackett, Marlin Jackson,
Robert Mathis, Chris Lytle and more.
“This event is our largest fundraiser for DREAM Alive, and all of the resources that are collected go directly towards the kids and to supply our DREAM coaches with resources that they need to impact their lives,” Allen explained. “Businesses can donate monetarily, and that helps to supply the necessary resources, but what

Heroine addiction is far reaching into our communities, more than most would like to think. These opiate-based drugs are infiltrating communities, affecting good kids from good homes. After her son’s tragic death from a heroin overdose, Geist resident Justin Phillips pushed for legislation to help prevent drug-related deaths.
"Sometimes the addiction is stronger than the will to get help," shares Phillips. "I want my hindsight to help save others."
Reaching out for help isn’t easy for many with addiction issues. "We have to talk about drug addiction the same way we talk about cancer," says Phillips who founded
Overdose Lifeline, Inc. "It’s time to break through the stigma and open up a sincere dialogue to help people."
The mission of Overdose Lifeline is to carry "the message of HOPE to individuals, families and communities affected by addiction," which was the driving force behind the passage of Aaron’s Law in the last legislative session. Aaron’s Law enables anyone access to a prescription for Naloxone (Narcan), the opiate drug antidote.
To realize that vision, Overdose Lifeline is working on behalf of addicts and their families to assure adequate resources and support exists.
Overdose Lifeline has developed an educational program to help inform students of the risks of opioids and heroin use and provide alternatives to using drugs and alcohol in dealing with the issues, stresses and pressures facing today’s youth.
Their website contains current information regarding heroin treatment and prevention, including resources for those who may be seeking help and for caregivers. There is also a poignant video created by Verexia Studios.
"I feel blessed to have been part of this project," shares Kindari O’Connor, founder of Verexia. "It is such an important message, and we hope this opens up a dialogue about addiction and encouraging people to seek treatment."

Overdose Lifeline funds the opiate drug antidote for police departments around the state of Indiana. Aaron’s Law not only makes Naloxone available to anyone, but also makes it legal for anyone to administer the drug.
Indianapolis Metro Police Department was one of the first to train officers to implement the Naloxone administration program.
"Our southwest district piloted the [Naloxone] Narcan program for our department with widespread success," states Lt. Richard Riddle of IMPD. "We have specially trained officers in the first line of defense in saving lives."
"Help is out there. All someone needs to do is go to our website and reach out to us," shares Phillips. "We have support groups and can place families in touch with the right resources to find the help they need and deserve."

Since inception 40 years ago, the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) has facilitated change by creating a strong impact across the country, enabling a more equitable playing field for women-owned businesses.
The result is a ripple effect, not only benefiting women but minority business owners as well.
The roots of NAWBO began with advocacy. In the 1970s, in order for a woman to get a business loan, a man had to to sign off on it. Realizing that women represented 54 percent of the voting public, a group of women in the D.C. area formed the first chapter of NAWBO to positively impact public policy.
The ripple effect of these efforts 40 years ago is still being felt in progressive waves. One of the largest, if not the strongest, chapter of NAWBO is located here in Indianapolis with a strong membership of over 200 central Indiana women-owned businesses.
NAWBO has broadened their scope from only being a vehicle for changing public policy, but it is a strong networking group of dynamic, successful and highly capable women who, when gathered in one room, create an electricity that is unmatched.
Each of these women is a game changer. A more intelligent, creative or professional grouping of individuals could not be found elsewhere.
"I have witnessed that within our membership, the more engaged a member is, the more she gets out of it," shares NAWBO Executive Director Mi’Chelle Bettner. "We have many opportunities to volunteer, attend events and serve on committees."
Executive Board President Kathy Cabello founded her own company, Cabello Associates, a strategic marketing consultancy working with Fortune 500 companies. Cabello is focused on driving businesses forward, which is her leadership theme for her Board position, by creating growth opportunities for NAWBO members and corporate partners in their mutually beneficial relationship.
"Studies show that locally owned businesses give more to their communities," states Cabello. "We at NAWBO provide the support and access to resources for growing businesses."
Carol Curren, of Phoenix Data Corp. located in Lawrence, emphasizes the value of networking within NAWBO, citing that she works with at least five companies that she met through the organization.
"I like to work within the NAWBO family and help these companies grow," shares Curren. "It also helps my company, and I enjoy helping others to further along their careers."
Curren, a natural mentor and President-Elect of the NAWBO Board of Directors, was directly mentored by another female business owner which motivates her to give back.

Cabello’s advice to women starting their own business is, "Be prepared to work very hard and surround yourself with a good core team."
Cabello established her goals with her Presidency as the following: "My desire is for women-owned businesses to grow and flourish, to go from good to GREAT and to economically impact our city, state and nation at unprecedented levels."

Chris Baggott, former co-founder of ExactTarget and Compendium Software, has a new start-up venture in Greenfield called Tyner Pond Farm.

You might have heard there’s a new farm in town…but let’s be honest, you’ve not been keeping up on the local farm scene. However, our Greenfield neighbors have one very awesome farm that is now available right at your doorstep.
I get it. You’re thinking, "I don’t want a farm at my doorstep." Perhaps not, but do you want local, pasture-raised, drug-free, delicious meats delivered for free? Yes please!
Meet the owner of Tyner Pond Farm, Chris Baggott. Chris comes from a software entrepreneurial background and has now dedicated his time and efforts to farming. Yep, you read that correctly. Someone left the thriving tech industry in Indy to farm! Once he read "The Omnivore’s Dilemma" by Michael Pollan, he knew it was
time to show society and our Indiana friends that we deserved to eat better.
Sure, you’ll pay a buck or two more for a Starbucks or a craft beer. Why? Because it tastes better. But why do we scoff at paying more for our meat and produce? Chris shares, "Too many people think you’re an elitist when you spend more on better quality food for your family or yourself. That couldn’t be further from the truth."
In addition to Chris’ farm to table restaurant, The Mug in Greenfield (if you haven’t been, go!), Tyner Pond Farm has launched a food delivery service bringing affordable, drug-free, non-GMO, pasture-raised pigs and chickens and grass-fed cattle to your door. The delivery area is growing and currently serves Carmel, Noblesville, Fishers, McCordsville, Lawrence, Greenwood, Indianapolis and as far as Muncie, Richmond and Columbus!
Farm Fresh& Fast!
50 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2015 / atGeist.com atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2015 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 51
You might wonder why Tyner Pond’s food tastes so much better. Chris believes, "The big aspect here is we want them [the animals] to be able to express their natural behavior. What makes a pig happy vs. makes a pig stressed? Pigs are happy when they can be piggish. They are happy when they have a variety to eat, they can roam around and have lots of sunshine. We don’t want to do anything that makes the pig unhappy. Animals living in their natural environments don’t need antibiotics pumped into them because they are far less likely to get sick. If you appreciate quality and you want something that tastes better, treat it better."
The completely amazing part is that if you don’t believe their claims, you can check it out for yourself! The farm is 100 percent open to guests. Head on out to Greenfield, walk the farm and meet the livestock, and while you’re there, you can check out the farm store.
Better yet, stay for the weekend. Have you ever wanted to check out a farm lifestyle? Extend your stay. Tyner Pond Farm now offers you and your family the amazing opportunity of experiencing life on the farm firsthand. You can rent their newly constructed, four bedroom, three full bath farmhouse for the weekend.
The farmhouse boasts a state-of-the-art kitchen equipped with family style dining sure to welcome great conversation and lots of memories. During your stay, start your day with a farm fresh breakfast followed by a stroll through the farm’s rolling fields while the animals start their day with you.
With the fall and holidays right around the corner, Tyner Pond has some family-friendly events coming up that you should check out. Running now through October, get ready for the Chicken Round Ups.
The kids and adults get to run around the farm collecting the chickens to give to the farmers for processing. The event runs for about 45 minutes and is sure to be a great time.
Don’t forget Thanksgiving! All year long, you can purchase gift certificates to the online or farm store, or get your holiday ham or turkey while also giving the gift of clean eating and supporting our local farmers!
Check out tynerpondfarm.com to start ordering from their online farm store or to read more about the farm and renting the farmhouse.

Walkers, runners and bikers along Fall Creek Road will be happy to see the much-anticipated multi-purpose trail project start construction in mid-October. Connecting the two new roundabouts, the 1.67 mile asphalt trail will be 10-feet wide, allowing for two-way pedestrian traffic. Total price of the project is approximately $2 million which is coming from the $3.7 million "Geist Impoundment Fund" set aside after the 2010 annexation of Geist by the Town of Fishers.
HAPPYTRAILSFALL CREEK TRAIL PROJECT BEGINS
Jeff Lantz, board member of the Geist Impoundment Fund, and Jason Taylor, Project Manager from the City of Fishers, meet at the Fall Creek Road trail which will be widened to 10' for 1.6 miles, connecting the new roundabouts at 96th and Brooks School Road.

Director of Engineering for the City of Fishers Jeff Hill goes over the plans with Geist Magazine Publisher Tom Britt.
Pedestrian bridges with new overlooks will highlight the 10' wide trail.
Taylor and Lantz meet at Mama Bears to review the project plans on site.
54 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2015 / atGeist.com
"It’s wide enough to get us the ability to have two way traffic, so you’re not on a four foot wide concrete walk like some of that portion around Geist and Masthead along Fall Creek [Road], and maybe you have to stop to make sure you don’t run into somebody," said Jeff Hill, Director of Engineering for the City of Fishers.
The paths are multi-use, so walking, running, rollerblading and biking are allowed on the paths. But any sort of motorized vehicle is not allowed – this includes mopeds and golf carts.
"That gets the pedestrians and the recreational bicyclists off the road," said Hill.
Butler, Fairman and Seufert Civil Engineers created the project plan which calls for the replacement of three wooden boardwalks along the road frontage, a new observation platform at the Geist Road causeway, trail signage, newly designed turning lanes at most Masthead entrance drives and new retaining walls to replace the aged wooden timbers. The
plans are being bid out by the City, and construction is scheduled to begin this fall.
"We have a few trees to clear down by the boardwalks near 96th Street and some utilities to move which we can get started on after October 15," said Hill.
One of Geist’s newest residents and Fishers engineer Jason Taylor will be the project manager. He lives just off of Fall Creek Road and often runs along the current trail.
"You might say I have a vested interest in making this project go smoothly," Taylor said with a grin.
Hill anticipates construction to begin on the northeast end (near the Brooks School and Fall Creek Road roundabout) and continue southwest in sections.
"By tackling this in sections, it will minimize the disruption to traffic as much as possible," added Taylor.
Geist Impoundment Fund board member and Canal Place resident Jeff Lantz is happy with the projects that their committee has recommended. Besides the two new Fall Creek Road roundabout sculptures at Brooks School Road and 96th Street, their committee was also behind the wiring and lighting project nearing completion on the Fall Creek Road bridge.
"We’re hoping to have enough budget left over to add lights and electricity on the north end of the lake on the Olio Road bridge, but that project is on hold until the final bill comes in on the Fall Creek Road bridge," says Lantz.
Taylor expects the project to be completed by August 1, 2016 with a substantial portion being done in time for the July 4 "Blast on the Bridge at Geist."

"Our commitment to youth hockey has doubled," states Indy Fuel CEO and COO Sean Hallett. "We are excited about increasing our reach into the community."
The Indy Fuel’s involvement will be evidenced by a stronger presence in clinics hosted by their coaches and players, youth hockey events and of course at the Indy Fuel games.
"It is great for the Fishers Youth Hockey Association (FYHA) that the Indy Fuel have purchased the Fuel Tank," says Rob Pozzebon, President of FYHA. "The Hallett family is investing in the future through their commitment at the youth level. We are
excited for this partnership and look forward to the upcoming season."
The Hallett family hails from Toronto and owned the Indianapolis Ice in 1999-2000. "We are excited about the Indianapolis market and knew we wanted the Blackhawks name recognition and connection with the city of Chicago," says Hallett.
In a league meeting, Hallett shared with the league commissioner that he doesn’t come from a hockey background. The commissioner’s response, "You will be more successful than 90 percent of the other owners."
Last season, the team started slowly but rallied in the second half behind Head Coach Scott Hillman and came up just short of the playoffs on the regular season’s final day. This season, the Fuel return a solid core of returning players, including 2014-15 Team MVP and leading scorer Garett
Bembridge and former NHL defenseman Kevin Quick.
So far, so great! The team is pumped about their positioning in the Indianapolis area and have gained ground and support from local fans.
"We look forward to a success longterm opportunity with the growing hockey community," said Hallett.
The Fuel begin their second ECHL season in mid-October at Indiana Farmers Coliseum at the State Fairgrounds. For full ticket information including details regarding Full and Half-Season Plans, 12-Game Flex Packs, 9-Game Plans and Group Tickets, visit the Fuel online at indyfuelhockey.com.
All 72 regular season Fuel games will once again be broadcast on the radio via CBS Sports 1430 AM, and all home games will be broadcast on television on RTV6 and HTSN.

During the first chapter of his professional career, Gary Brackett drew a favorable reputation of playing with passion, performing without fear and being totally prepared for game days.
Those three assets underlined the attributes unleashed by Brackett during his nine years in the National Football League when he started and starred for the Indianapolis Colts. This was the same Gary Brackett who went undrafted and was a giant question mark to make the Colts’ roster in his rookie season in 2003.
Nowadays, Brackett continues to draw a favorable rating in the second chapter of his professional life. He still plays with passion, still performs without fear and still prepares for game days. The only difference is that now the 35-year-old Carmel native oversees eight central Indiana restaurants and is mapping out strategies to grow to over 20 Hoosier dining establishments by 2019. This is the same Gary Brackett who entered the restaurant business with little background and perhaps a target to misfire on this new and challenging occupation.
This former athlete has uncovered utopia, part two.
"Joe Jefferson told me that one day, we all go out into the real world," remembered Brackett of a conversation with a former teammate with the Colts, "and that I shouldn’t let football define who I was. At that point, I knew I had to come up with something that I could enjoy after football."
That opportunity came when he became partners with Chris Long, a longtime central Indiana restaurant operator who started opening up the Stacked Pickle franchise in the metro Indianapolis area. Eventually, Brackett bought out Long, took on a new partner (Jeff Smith) and dove head first into the restaurant and entertainment business.

He and Smith own six Stacked Pickles (including ones in Zionsville, Carmel, Fishers and Greenwood). Future locations are scheduled for Southport (the first free-standing facility), Westfield and West Lafayette.
And more expansion is on the horizon. Brackett and Smith, a former executive at Outback Steakhouse, Applebee’s and O’Charley’s, plan to open up three new outlets in each of the next five years. Possible sites include Fort Wayne, South Bend, Bloomington, Terre Haute, Plainfield and Evansville.
But both are cautious in their dreaming.
"We have a system that we believe in," said Brackett. "I am fascinated with the business, but we operate with very low margins, so there is no room for error."
Meanwhile, Brackett and Smith have expanded into another restaurant venture.
Georgia Reese’s Southern Table and Bar boasts two locations, one on 86th Street on the northside of Indianapolis and the recently opened downtown location on Washington Street.
The restaurant was named after Brackett’s 2-year-old daughter and features a soul-filled Southern cuisine that is new to the Indianapolis market. Supper (yes, supper) items include Alligator Gumbo, Country Fried Green Tomatoes and Sweet Potato Casserole. For those with less adventure, the menu also enlists blackened or fried catfish, Georgia Reese’s Fried Chicken, Grace Norma’s Shrimp and "Indy’s Best" Slow Smoked Wings.
There is frequently live music played for background. Georgia Reese’s was recently featured on Julia Moffitt’s What’s Cooking segment on WTHR, and Brackett is scheduled to be interviewed for Inside INdiana Business in August. He chats business, not football.
The two restaurants cater to many different dining audiences. Brackett says that for lunch, the Stacked Pickle is a place where people "want to get in and get out." The dinner crowd looks for fair pricing and quality. In a recent tasting session at the Zionsville location, Brackett and Smith tasted potential future products.
"You really want to have something on the menu for everyone," said Brackett. "We believe we need to continue to cater to more women with our salads and wraps."
As for Georgia Reese’s, Brackett admits people should be prepared to embark on an eating adventure with heavy food entrees.
"You want to loosen your belt," confessed Brackett, who proudly claims the restaurant has a sizzling Sunday brunch menu. "The recipes are original, and the restaurant is very unique. We have meatloaf, catfish, chicken, shrimp and more. It is not just another soul place."
Gary Brackett poses with a photo from his pro days.

Brackett is also not just another soldier of football. Besides graduating from Rutgers (yes, there is a Rutgers banner in the Stacked Pickle), he earned his MBA in business economics from George Washington University. He also married his wife Ragan, a Brebeuf and Indiana University graduate who is now a doctor at Community East Hospital. Besides their daughter Georgia, there’s also 6-year-old Gabriel and 3-year-old Gary, Jr.
Other family members are the expanding restaurant homes. The Zionsville location sits a mile from Brackett’s Carmel home, allowing him to visit the location morning, afternoon and night. He uses the visits to reinforce to staff his marketing and sales philosophies.
"People are searching for a purpose, and operating the restaurants is my purpose," said Brackett. "I love inspiring people and am humble enough to listen to them. Yelling and screaming won’t make people work harder. I like to say that I may have bad moments, but I never have bad days."
Brackett maintains that focus even when he stirs late at night and goes to the computer to review sales at the restaurants.
"P and L [profit and loss] statements are brutally honest," Brackett said. "They are your scorecards and are our wins and losses, but you also have to realize that they are not the final destination. You can make things better."
Brackett remembers lessons learned from his football career, which ended after undergoing eight separate surgeries. ("Some days, I feel like I am 51 and not 35," he admitted.)
Football can be one play a time. Restaurants can be one customer at a time.
"Competition is tough, but competition is tough in every business," Brackett noted. "We try to value every client and try to break everything down to see what is attainable. How can we get six extra people in for lunch or dinner?"
In this area, Brackett reads and observes other success stories. For example, former NBA star Junior Bridgeman owns over 200 restaurants (many of them Wendy’s) and is estimated to be worth $400 million. However, Brackett also calls on his own persona. This one bubbles with enthusiasm…just as it did during his NFL days.
"I believe in being engaged," said Brackett after greeting guests at the Stacked Pickle on Michigan Road. "People want to be around friends and friendly people."
Just like Gary Brackett.
