New weekend program: Get Into
The Gardens! “Get Into The Gardens” is a new weekend program that provides free educational programming to visitors at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The series will include family-friendly demonstrations, the return of Hikes for Tykes, an educational outdoor adventure designed for preschool children and their families, and Sunday Scene, an educational walk through each of the gardens at Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
The next family-friendly demonstration will take place on Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m. Participants will take part in “Planting a Strawberry Jar,” a free demonstration. This spring will also feature demonstrations on planting tomatoes and peppers and include simple watering strategies.
The next Hikes for Tykes takes place on March 23 at 10 a.m., while the next Sunday Scene will be on May 5.
Registration is not required. Meet in The Gardens’ plaza. For more information about the “Get Into The Gardens” series, contact Volunteer Coordinator Taylor Steele at 205.414.3962 or [email protected].

eDear Friends:
Wow! It’s hard to believe spring is just a few weeks away. We’ve been very busy planning events and activities that never really stop, but reach a peak at this time of year. I tend to thrive in an atmosphere filled with numerous projects, and while it sometimes makes for barely-made deadlines (whew!), and things deferred for later (sorry!), it certainly isn’t boring. As the days get noticeably longer after the vernal equinox, there is more energy, literally, available for our gardens to slide out of winter and burst into spring, and I feel it, too. Take a walk through The Gardens to get some of your share.
Behind the scenes, electrical and steel repair work is already happening in the first phase of Conservatory improvements. Once we’re past our last frost date, the old glass will be removed, the 50-year old structure will be cleaned and re-painted, and new safety glass will be installed. We expect to re-open in the fall. The Conservatory renovation is just one project in planning, in progress, or recently completed. Another is the new Thorne Amphitheater, in the Japanese Gardens, which was built last fall as a permanent gathering space and audience area for the Moore Cultural Pavilion, thanks to a bequest from Barbara Drummond Thorne.
We are getting tremendous interest in and response to our native plant certificate class offerings and other adult classes. Take a class or two and see what the excitement is all about. All the classes and easy registration are at bbgardens.org/education. And if spring is coming then so is our Spring Plant Sale. All the details are inside, with information on our food-themed Earth Day at The Gardens, Library programs and more.
See you in The Gardens,
Fred SpicerExecutive Director

TIt all began with a wonderful lady who loved nature, Sara Askew Jones, the former Healthy Living editor of Southern Living magazine. Sara was a multiple cancer survivor, beloved by friends and co-workers, who lived until 2011. Her admirers wanted to honor her in a special way. Given the long association of Southern Living with The Gardens, they suggested funding an entrance feature for the Hess Camellia Garden which could replace the wooden arbor in disrepair along the main garden path. Permission given, they sprang into action. Architect Rob Martin, a close friend of Sara’s, created a conceptual plan for a trellis arbor which was finalized by Scotty Howell of Robinson Iron in Alexander City, AL. Of course, the actual estimate was much more expensive than first envisioned, especially since the structure will be made of durable patinated aluminum. To fund the project, Sara’s friends, lead by Charles Walton and Todd Childs, set up an on-line auction and raised half the money for the project through sales of donated art and services. Individual donors and family members contributed the balance of the funds or contributed in-kind services. Bob Barnett donated his expertise as structural engineer, while Sara’s husband John Jones, a retired contractor, will personally build the footings.
This effort to honor Sara has been a catalyst for the entire Hess Camellia Garden which was designed by the late Carolyn Tynes and dedicated in 1987. Jimmie Hess and her husband Emil established the garden in honor of his mother Nettie Hess. Happily, Jimmie knew about the improvements before her sudden death in January. Over the next few years, the area near the arbor will be the home of a collection of camellia cultivars that were developed in Birmingham. Members of the Birmingham Camellia Society have worked hard to locate, document and arrange for propagation of these plants, some of which are quite rare in cultivation. John Floyd, a friend and former boss of Sara’s, was instrumental in orchestrating this project.
We still need funds for upgrading the paths in the Hess Camellia Garden. Please contact Director of Development Olivia Alison at 205.414.3961 or [email protected] or Donor Relations Officer Drew Rickel at 205.414.3955 or [email protected] if you would like to help.

The French philosopher Bernard of Chartres said, “We are like dwarves on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they, and things at a greater distance, not by virtue of any sharpness of sight on our part, or any physical distinction, but because we are carried high and raised up by their giant size.”
Because of the sturdy shoulders of our volunteers, The Gardens has been able to achieve lofty goals and to clearly see its path to the future. At The Gardens, our volunteers and partner organizations are our giants. Though too numerous to name, you may recognize many by reading past newsletters or a blog entry from this past year. This is how we share their stories. Volunteers dedicate their time to teach children, grow plants, tend gardens, chair
events, stuff envelopes, check out books and give tours among many other eclectic responsibilities that maintain our beauty and help us achieve our educational mission.
On Thursday, December 12, Birmingham Botanical Gardens held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, recognizing the time and dedication of this group. Over 200 volunteers, invited guests, City of Birmingham
staff, and Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens staff shared in the recognition of four individuals and one partner organization for the event. Cathy Adams was presented the Ida C. Burns Volunteer of the Year award for her continual service and significant contributions to many areas of the organization. Ann Katholi was awarded the A. Brand Walton, Jr. Unsung Hero of the Year for her unwavering “behind the scenes” contributions to the annual plant sale events. Masaji “Buffy” Morai, a Japanese architect, was hired from St. Louis to design the Japanese Gardens at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. He was a skilled architect, but a self-taught watercolor artist as well. He learned to paint during his time in the California internment camps during World War II. Many of his paintings depict our Japanese Gardens, various landscapes, botanicals and animal prints. Our collection currently has around thirteen prints from Buffy, but we would like to increase our collection. If you have a Buffy print, and would like to donate it to our Archives, please contact Jason Kirby, library assistant & archivist, at 205.401.3967 or [email protected].

Many small flowering trees bloom in the spring. Halesia diptera var. magniflora, called the large-flowered two-winged silverbell, is probably not on everyone’s “top five” lists, but perhaps it should be. The species is native from southeast TX, through LA, MS and AL into the FL panhandle and southern GA, with outlying populations in AR and SC. More research is needed to determine if the large-flowered forms, restricted to southwest GA and adjacent FL and possibly AL, warrant varietal status or are just local anomalies.
Wherever its taxonomic affinity lies, this is a lovely small tree with excellent heat tolerance and no pest problems. Happiest in half shade and evenly moist soils, it adapts well to drier and more exposed sites (if given an occasional drink during hard droughts) even if the soil is rocky or clayey. A young specimen in the Forman Garden flowers in late March to early April for about two weeks and the lightly fragrant flowers, aptly named (above right), hold up well.
In youth the growth habit is upright and pyramidal (left) but the plant widens with age, assuming a rather tidy, arching umbrella-like shape to about 25’ and slightly wider. I think the best way to grow this species is to train it to a single leader and elevate the canopy a little. This puts the flowers at eye/nose level. H. tetraptera, mountain silverbell, is a shrubbier plant and is more amenable to growing with multiple trunks. The green fruits look like smooth peach pits with two wings, and are often taken by small mammals and some birds. Fall color is a deep yellow (below right).
Alan Weakley writes, “The genus was named to honor Stephen Hales; it therefore seems more appropriate to pronounce the genus with three syllables (the accent on the first) than the commonly heard four, which thoroughly distorts the honoree’s name.” Thus HAILS-e-uh and not huh-LEEZ-e-uh. The epithet diptera comes from di+ptera meaning two wings; the “p” is voiced, which thoroughly distorts its Greek roots!
MarchFRUITS AND NUTS - Continue strawberry and grape plantings. Bud apples and peaches. Start planting blackberries.
SHRUBS - Fertilize shrubs (except azaleas and camellias) according to a soil test. Late plantings may be made, particularly if they are container-grown. Watch shrubs for harmful insects.
LAWNS - Fertilize established lawns.
ROSES - Watch new growth for aphids. Begin a spray or dust program. Begin fertilizing.
ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS - Tender annuals may be planted in South Alabama. Check garden centers for bedding plants.
BULBS - Plant gladiolus every two or three weeks if a long blooming season is desired. Plant tuberous begonias in pots. Plant dahlias.
MISCELLANEOUS - Check and repair sprayers, dusters, and lawn mowers. Control lawn weeds with chemicals. Delay pruning of fruiting shrubs such as cotoneasters, pyracanthas, and hollies until after flowering.
VEGETABLE SEEDS - Plant hardy crops recommended for January and February. After danger of frost is past, plant tender vegetables.
AprilFRUITS AND NUTS - Season for strawberry planting continues. Start spray program for all fruits. Plant raspberries and blackberries and continue budding apples and peaches.
SHRUBS - Prune spring flowering shrubs after flowering. Fertilize azaleas and camellias. When new growth is half completed, spray all shrubs with a fungicide.
LAWNS - Planting continues. New lawns may need supplementary watering. Also, fertilize at 3- to 6-week intervals. Keep ryegrass cut low, particularly if over planted on bermuda lawns.
ROSES - Watch for insects and diseases. Keep old flower heads removed. Plant container-grown plants from garden centers.
ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS - Plant annuals or bedding plants from garden centers. Divide mums or root cuttings. Dig and divide dahlias.
BULBS - Plant gladiolus, fancy-leaved caladiums, milk and wine lilies, and ginger and gloriosa lilies. Feed bearded iris with superphosphate and spray for borers. Avoid cutting foliage of narcissus or other bulbs until it has turned brown naturally.
MISCELLANEOUS - Spray camellias, hollies, etc., for scale insects. Carefully water new plantings of shrubs and trees. Pinching out tips of new shoots promotes more compact shrubs.
VEGETABLE SEED - Plant tender vegetables such as beans, corn, squash, melons, and cucumbers.
VEGETABLE PLANTS - Plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, sweet potatoes, and parsley
