It has been quite a summer here in Western Washington with the heat
and smoke filled skies! Mother Nature gave us a little break to enjoy
our last Summer BBQ hosted by David and Jane Edgley. Many thanks to David and Jane for hosting our BBQ’s again this year. It is
hard to believe that our last cruise of the 2018 cruising season is just a
few days away as we all head to Sucia Island. Let’s all keep our fingers
crossed that the fires calm down so we can enjoy September on the
water or on our decks!
We have a few things that we are wrapping up on the business side of things, and will
start our monthly board meetings back up in September. We encourage you to attend,
and hopefully to join us on a committee, hosting a dinner, or hosting a port in 2019.
From the Helm—Terry Sigmond, Commodore

From the Clubhouse—Rear Commodore, Ken Olsen
It's been a great summer for boating, as long as you were out before August! This long spell of forest fire smoke has put a damper on the otherwise stunning scenery that we look
forward to each year. It is clearing off and the fall season of cruising will be in full swing in
September, with longer nights and cooler mornings. It's my favorite time to be out, since the
bunks are welcoming and warm, the coffee is steaming hot, and the days are crisp and clear.
Also, there are far fewer people on the water, so it's a bit more private and personal. Susan and I will be in the Gulf Islands in late September.
Fall is also the time to start up our Clubhouse Dinners again. We’re kicking fall off with the Past
Commodore’s Dinner on September 22. The theme is "Back to the Ranch", and BBQ will be the feature.
Registration is open and will close on September 16th. There are still a few seats left so sign up on the
website (or call or email me if you need help signing up). I know it’s still a long way off, but we already have a host for the first dinner of 2019, our traditional January Soup Dinner. Brenda and Bill Davis will be contacting you to ask you to make your favorite soup.
It's always a fun event so get your crock-pots out. If you’ve always wanted to host a Yacht Club dinner but
aren’t sure how to take the plunge, all you need to do is get a few of your friends together to help, and put
your own personal “spin” on the evening. The March dinner is in need of a host. Give me a call and I’ll sign
you up. Finally, please join me in extending a big Thank You to David and Jane Edgley for hosting the Friday Barbecues this summer. They have done a great job keeping the home fires and BBQ's burning. I hope they
will continue next year. Plan on re-connecting at the September dinner!
Vice Commodore—Jon Galbraith
Greetings, everyone. The Labor Day holiday is almost upon us, and we’ve closed out an August that was a little unusual by SBYC standards. Unusual in that our club did not hold
an official cruising event last month. If you’ll recall, we determined last fall that none of our
Bridge Officers would be available to participate in an August cruise, so we decided instead
to extend our June Cruise by a few days and not host a club-sponsored cruise in August.
That certainly didn’t prevent SBYC cruisers from making a big showing out on the water last month, though, as the pictures found throughout this issue of the Dolphin will attest.
The collection of pictures in this month’s Dolphin could be called “SBYC Boats Afloat.” These are some of
the many pictures posted by our members on our SBYC-only Facebook page during their August cruising adventures. Just as we had hoped, Facebook is proving to be a useful and fun way for us to stay connected
and to coordinate meet-ups while away from our home ports. We now have 52 club members participating
in our Facebook group. If you'd like to join the group but can’t figure out how, just let me know — I’ll be
happy to help. Or, better still, come to the next SBYC training session on Monday, October 1 at 6:30 in the
clubhouse, where I’ll present a demonstration of the SBYC Facebook page and answer your questions about how it works and how to use it.

From the Charthouse—Fleet Captain, Bill Davis
Ahoy Mates:
Hope you all have enjoyed cruising this summer. The addition of the Shelter Bay Yacht Club
Facebook page has allowed many of us to connect and rendezvous while cruising, particularly
in August when there was no formal sponsored club cruise. Being able to rendezvous with
friends at various ports of call just seems to make cruising more fun, so I offer a smart salute to Vice Commodore Jon Galbraith for developing the SBYC Facebook page.
At this writing, we have over 20 boats registered for the annual Sucia Cruise September 5th - 7th. This
year's theme is "Woodstock on the Rock" to recognize the upcoming 50th anniversary of Woodstock, and
what a blast from the past it will be! Tie dyeing, karaoke, and twister are but a few of the events that will
remind everyone of those days, and I'm certain it will be lots of fun! Many thanks to our Port Hosts and Crew Anne & Rob Hays, Vanessa & Greg Finch, Debbie and Jon Galbraith, Laurie & Gregg Wishkoski,
Linda & Jim Barrett, and Susan & Ken Olsen.
Yours at anchor, Fleet Captain Bill Davis
New Member Coordinator—Connie Cobb
Welcome September and good riddance to smoky hazy days. We're all ready for fall and sunny days.
This month we're welcoming new members Laurence and Toni Larsen, Ingrid Simonson,
and Bob and Dawn Brown.
The Larsens reside in Darrington and now own the 34’ Tollycraft, Rendezvous, on C Dock.
They're looking forward to group cruising and meeting other members. They currently own a hardware
business.
Ingrid Simonson has joined as an associate member looking forward to social activities and meeting Shelter
Bay Yacht Club members. She is currently making amazing changes to her new home on Suquamish Way. Her background is in coaching, with a business training skiers at Snoqualmie.
The Browns live on Shelter Bay Drive, they are relatively new to boating but are looking forward to group
cruising. They own a 42’ Sabre, Joie de Vie, on F Dock. Their backgrounds are in the printing business and
they now are retired and ready for some fun boating experiences.
RECIPROCAL PROGRAM TERMS
Shelter Bay Marina is allowing the Yacht Club to use slip E 20 on the south side of the new dock, on a first
come first served basis for our Reciprocal Program. We pay a small fee to the Marina for each use of this
slip. In addition, we would like to be able to offer Yacht Club members’ slips in the main and division 5
marinas during the summer months. The Board approved payment of $15/day for use of your slip while you are away. Please contact Kendra at 466-3805 in the Community Office to list your slip. We will be
working with the Community to make sure our Marina and Yacht Club are a welcoming site for reciprocal
visitors.
