ARNDELL ANGLICAN COLLEGE ADVOCATE NEWSLETTER 2014 118-124 Wolseley Road, OAKVILLE NSW 2765 P. 02 4572 3633
From the Headmaster Mr Gareth Leechman
Over the past few weeks I have
been reminded of why I
became an educationalist and
fell in love with the profession I
chose to be a part of – it is all
about the students! So much of my role can
be caught up with administration, dealing with
issues which arise, and other matters, and so
often I can forget or seemingly don’t have the
time to get out of the office and explore the
world which is Arndell Anglican College.
Over the last few weeks I have forced myself
to get out and about and I have seen some
fantastic things that our students are
achieving and are involved in. Our Year 12
students continue to work well and at a recent
chapel service the Year 12’s conducted the
whole service, including providing the
sermon. Danni De Keizer did a wonderful job
in sharing her faith with the entire high school
and so many students respected what she
did. It is not an easy thing to get up in front of
almost 600 people and share with them
something so personal, but she did an
excellent job and I walked away the better for
hearing her speak.
Our sporting programme continues to gain
momentum across both the Junior and Senior
Schools, and I have been able to witness
several very good sporting achievements in
recent weeks. The Junior School Athletics
team were able to perform very well at the
recent HICES Athletics Carnival, maintaining
a strong position in Division 1. Our Year 7 – 8
Junior Girls’ Futsal team, and Intermediate A
Netball team, both won their respective HZSA
competitions and seven of our school athletes
were picked to represent the AICES team at
the CIS Carnival.
In the CAPA Department we have had our
Year 12 students complete their major works
in Art, Drama and Music and so many
students did their personal best performances
when it mattered the most. The Junior
School rehearsals continue to occur for the
upcoming Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolour Dreamcoat and I have been so
impressed by the work of all involved in this
production. The inclusive nature of our
college means that all students in the Junior
School have a role to play and the work of
teachers such as Miss Sylvia Mitchell, Miss
Megan Bryant, Mrs Merryn Court and Mrs
Karen Merrick, as well as the whole Junior
School staff, must be acknowledged. I am
looking forward to the production.
Finally, in the high school we are all looking
forward to camp! I hope that all students will
have a wonderful and safe time. As the
holidays approach may I encourage all
students to have an enjoyable break, so that
when they come back to the college they are
ready to finish the academic year strongly.
Keep up to date with the latest college events and activities

From the Head of Junior School Rev Keith Peterson
As the conclusion to a very
full, and very live and
successful term, Week 10 is
ARTS WHIZZ! - (Creative Arts
Week) - in the Junior School.
The Junior School Arts Week is designed to
provide opportunity to energetically open our
windows wide in new directions, in particular
celebration of all that the creative arts offer in
terms of renewal, joy, expression and
celebration.
At the very centre of this year’s ARTS WHIZZ!
- and providing its theme P-6 - is the Junior
School Musical, ‘Joseph’. Under the tireless
and wonderful direction of Miss Sylvia Mitchell ,
with the highly generous contribution of Mrs
Karen Merrick, Mrs Elva Miller, all Junior Staff
and so many others, including many staff from
the High School, Mr Chris Wilson, Mr Tony
Merrick and gifted students from TAFE NSW,
the ‘Joseph’ project has grown into a quite
exceptional expression of the creative life and
energy, dream and vision, of Arndell Anglican
College Junior School and the intrinsically
connected communities of which it is a part.
And, of course, what makes this process the
most special is that every student in the Junior
School, Years 3-6, has a part – and that
without that part it is impossible for ‘the whole’
to maintain the same quality.
An orchestra may have a first violinist, but that
violin can only sing on the melody provided by
all the other violins in the cohort.
So it is with the Junior School Musical. It is an
opportunity to hone and support particular
talent, but above all it’s a celebration of
inclusivity – of us functioning best as part of
one another – as inter-connected parts of a
single song.
It’s going to be a great week – and a wonderful
musical!
Every blessing!

‘Excellence in Teaching Award’ Mr Jim Milford
We are pleased to announce Mathematics teacher, Miss Kristen Bailey, has been awarded a ‘Certificate of Excellence’ as runner up of the prestigious Teachers’ Guild of NSW Award for Excellence at a ceremony held on 6th Sept, 2014 at Trinity Grammar School. The award is given to teachers in their early years of teaching. We are excited, yet again, to see quality Arndell teaching and learning recognised on a state level for the third consecutive year. Arndell Anglican College values how students learn and we are making the teaching and learning relationship a prime goal. Miss Bailey joins three other Arndell teachers who have been a recipient of Guild awards in as many years. Mr Ian Finn received the Certificate of Excellence in
2012, Miss Lauren Kenny received the Certificate of Excellence in 2013 and Mr Leighton Corr won the Award for Excellence in 2013. To gain recognition as an outstanding practitioner, Miss Bailey was firstly identified as an outstanding teacher. She was required to support her nomination with a thousand word submission and go
through a rigorous interview process. A key consideration of the submission was current teaching practice, student engagement, extra-curricular involvement and future plans for professional growth. It is understood that only the top five candidates in NSW were selected for interview. Miss Bailey has made a substantial impact within and beyond the classroom, making a significant contribution to the wider school community. As Equestrian Coordinator she has organised two highly successful Arndell Equestrian Carnivals, bringing together riders representing schools from across NSW. She has also coached netball and touch football teams and tutors in the afterschool Mathematics Club. Miss Bailey is also proactive in the college’s ‘Literacy’ and ‘Professional Growth’ Committees.

Red Frog Crew
On the 3rd of September the 'Red Frogs Crew' came to have a discussion with us Year 12 students in preparation for the celebrations that come with finishing school. They made us aware of the many things that can go wrong at parties and 'schoolies' and showed us how to enjoy all of the celebrations while being safe and aware of our surroundings at all times. It was a very beneficial morning and opened all our eyes as to what really can happen when we so often think we are invincible. It was also very reassuring for us to know that the Red Frogs Crew are there to support us no matter what situation we might find our selves in. Krista Born The Red Frogs seminar was an insightful and informational program which taught Year 12 about the do's and don'ts of parties, especially schoolies. Through interactive activities they demonstrated how easily it is to get into trouble, as well as getting home safely. We thank Red Frogs for coming to Arndell, and appreciate the work they do for young adults like ourselves. Brendan Vielhauer
Students were exposed to some thought provoking hands-on activities like “How much is a standards
Drink” and had an opportunity to put on some “Beer goggles” which simulated the effects of alcohol.
Students enjoyed a dance-off while others schemingly placed things in their cups unknowingly. The
seminar was eye opening to what can go wrong when partying, and gave good strategies of where to
get help through Chaplaincy organisations like Red Frogs who are on the front line. My prayer for our
Arndell students is that they make wise and safe decisions at parties, utilise the Red Frogs teams
both at schoolies and universMrsity when the time comes, and that they consider carefully both their
own safety and that of their friends in the coming celebratory period. Mrs Jennifer Daly

Last Tuesday 6 High School red jumpers were sent to me as lost property. Not one of them was
labelled with a student name. Please understand that it is impossible to identify the correct owners
when clothing is not labelled, and students who come looking for property always take the newest
item, which sometimes creates problems when another student comes looking for their ‘new’ clothing.
Because of this impossibility of identifying ownership, all unlabelled clothing is now washed and sent
to the uniform shop for resale.
I also have a girl’s ‘Ice’ watch and a boy’s ‘Lorus’ watch, handed in 2 or 3 weeks ago.
PLEASE check that your child’s clothing is labelled so that I can return it to them.
Eagles’ Wings Poetry
Thank you to the following Senior School students who tutored Eagles Wings children in the Writer’s Workshop: Elly Hibberd, Jasmine Shur, Emily Arndold, Emily Ayres, Jordan Johnson, Rebecca Paroz and Caitlin Boyle. Here are some poems created by Year 3 and 4 children.
I am a glistening unicorn Sparkling, amazing, colourful. Loveable. Lover of happiness, kindness and generosity. As colourful as a rainbow Who fights through pain. Clipety, clapity, clop. Victoria Zahra Year 4

Though it was nice to see so many receive awards, their splendid behaviour and good sportsmanship was impressive. In reality the prizes are not the most important feature of participation in the eisteddfod. It’s the journey to prepare to perform and the skills and confidence that come with the experience that is the most important. I believe that every participant is a winner! Congratulations! Stage 3 iPad Training
Last week we welcomed iTeacher’s, Mr Andrew Wright, into our Year 5 and 6 classrooms. He worked
alongside our Stage 3 teaching team, showing our students how to use their iPads with a green
screen to immerse themselves in the day to day life of the Australian gold rush. Students learnt a lot
and had fun exploring the gold fields.

Year 10 Rolling Thunder Vietnam Excursion Thomas Dobson Year 10
On Friday the 29th of August, Year 10 history and music students visited the State
Theatre to view Rolling Thunder Vietnam. The show features a talented cast and
critically acclaimed band, known for its performances with John Farnham worldwide
musical productions.
The show reflects what Year 10 have been studying in history classes; various events,
sentiments and attitudes surrounding the Vietnam War. These were portrayed through
musical performances from the era, as well as dramatic enactments based on real war
experiences.
The show encapsulated a sober, educational, but still entertaining experience. The
soaring highs and melancholic lows of the musical acts reflected the true nature of the
Vietnam War, with dramatic interludes that captured significant events.
Seated in the upper mezzanine, Arndell students experienced an enthralling
presentation, with a mixture of soothing and sometimes confronting music, that
resonated through the upper echelons of the auditorium. Students were impressed by
the marvellous décor and grandeur of the establishment.
The experience was powerfully reinforced through stunning visuals, piercing guitar
solos and impressive vocal performances that left the audience astounded.
Vietnam veterans were in attendance and were acknowledged after a vibrant encore.
Rolling Thunder Vietnam provided an unforgettable experience for the lucky Arndell
students and teachers who were able to attend.
