ers

W ater plays a significant role in our economy, the environment and our quality of life. Teaching students about the importance of water is where we excel.

Our program offers three types of learning experiences including classroom presentations, field trips and service learning projects. Whether you need a presentation, a tour of a water treatment plant, an opportunity for students to take action or all of the above, we can help provide your students with an in-depth look at water.

For more information call or e-mail us today to arrange a program that works for you. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Aurora Water Youth Education Team 720-427-6029

Dear Educator,

Looking for a continuing education opportunity?

Held each year in late June, this interactive workshop

for teachers is all about water. You’ll learn, first

hand, where your water comes from. You’ll explore

our mountain watersheds, learn about the effects of

forest fires on our watershed, conduct water quality

studies, tour a Xeriscape garden and visit a water

treatment plant. You’ll walk away with the nationally

recognized Project Learning Tree and Project WET

curriculum guides, a better understanding of where

your water comes from and access to Aurora Water’s

innovative educational opportunities. To receive

information about next summer’s program and an

application, e-mail [email protected] or call

SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS

Students can take action on what they have learned through Aurora Water’s service projects. Staff will assist teachers to complete student projects such as storm drain stenciling, native wetland plantings, weed removal, water pollution prevention, or creating a school-wide conservation campaign. To volunteer for a project call, 303-739-7372.

Storm Drain Stenciling(Grades 5-12)Storm drains, found along streets and curbs, take rainwater from storms directly to local waterways without passing through a treatment plant. Volunteers are needed to assist in this important pollution prevention project by labeling storm drains around Aurora with the educational message “No Dumping, Drains to Creek.” Call 303-739-7372.

High Line Canal Clean Up(Participants must be at least 8)The High Line Canal Clean Up is a community-wide effort to beautify the

High Line Canal and prevent trash from entering Tollgate and Sand Creeks with the release of spring runoff. This event is scheduled at the end of March each year. Volunteers are needed to help pick up trash along the 11 miles of the High Line Canal that runs through Aurora. Call 303-739-7372.

Household Chemical Round Up(Participants must be at least 16)The Household Chemical Roundup is an annual one-day household hazard-ous waste collection event held each September. Products collected at the event are recycled, reused or disposed of properly. Volunteers are needed to register participants, unload vehicles and staff collection stations. Call 303-739-7372.

If I Were a Fish(Preschool-Grade 1)What would you need if you were a fish? Clean water! Explore the importance of this natural resource through movement and songs like “H2O,” “If I Were a Fish” and “The Water Cycle.” Learn about the water cycle and the role that people play in it, how we use water and how kids can help protect it.

Water Heroes (Grades 1-3)It takes a lot of interesting people with cool jobs to provide water to Aurora. Learn about the people in our community who bring water to your faucet. During this presentation, students dress up in costumes and act out the water supply process.

Water in the Ol’ WestAssembly Presentation(Grades 1-5)Take a journey back in time to the cattle drives. Calamity Jane and Barb Wire share a chuck-wagon full of antiques and treasures and tell the tale of water use in the Ol’ West.

Water—Keep it Clean!(Grades 3-8)The earth is about 77 percent water, but not all of that is available for us to use as drinking water. Find out why through inter-active games. Take a look at a watershed model to understand how kids can help protect our water.

Conservation Capers(Grades 3-8)Students learn more about the source of their water and conservation through three conservation capers. In the “Wasteful Water Charade” they explore how water is used and wasted. With “Water Flow Cup” they see how a low-flow shower head or sink aerator really works. With “Conservation Kit – Take Action” students receive an Aurora Water Conservation Kit to take home and start saving water.

We All Live Downstream— Protecting our Watershed(Grades 6-12)You have just inherited river-front property and a million dollars. Find out all you need to know about Point-Source and Non-Point Source water pollution.

Careers in Water(Grades 9-12)Learn about Aurora’s water sources and the types of careers involved in the water industry. Play “Wet Work Shuffle” and test your understanding of the water delivery process.

LASSROOM PRESENTATIONSIn the following programs presenters bring fun, water-related models, games and activities into your classroom. In each of the following presentations, students learn where their water comes from, how to prevent water pollution and the importance of water conservation. Your students will also receive “All About Aurora Water” activity booklets and information on joining Aurora’s Water Wizards Kid’s Club.

XERISCAPE GARDEN PROGRAM

Xeriscape: Adapting Landscapes to Our Environment (Grades 6-12)Involve your students in a local water conservation program! Aurora Water is looking at ways of not only providing information about water conservation, but also changing behavior and habits. Aurora Water can help teachers bring social change into their classrooms while meeting state standards by integrating this local conservation push into your…• history class by studying

ancient societies and linking cultural expansion with water availability;

• math class by applying equations to predict future water use in Aurora and define our goals as a city;

• science class by combining the creation of a Xeriscape garden into your botany unit;

• English class by having your students create articles, commercials and brochures to spread the word; or

• art class and set up easels in a garden.

If you have ideas about how water conservation can benefit your curriculum and for more details contact Mark Cassalia at 720-238-5081 or [email protected].

Visit the Xeriscape Garden(Grades 2-12)The Aurora Xeriscape Garden offers the opportunity for students and teachers to take their learning outside to study plants, perform experiments and discuss the role of Xeriscape in Aurora. Contact Mark Cassalia at 720-238-5081 or [email protected] for more information and to schedule a class in our exciting outdoor resource.
