TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teach-ing and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false proph-ets. Some false prophets

were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he was-n’t an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God’s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. ALTAR SERVER CLASS A refresher class for all Altar Servers will be offered on Thursday, February 22nd at 6 pm at the Church. The instruction should last about an hour. Servers who

have been helping for less than a year are especially encouraged to attend. Thank you for faithfully serv-

ATTENTION PARENTS/ GUARDIANS: Please note that we have noticed an increasing problem with unaccompanied children using the bathroom/ Parish Center during Mass. We re-spectfully ask that all children who are taking a bathroom break during the Mass be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Also, older youth

need to remain in Mass and not be chatting in the Parish Center.

DIOCESE OF YAKIMA YOUTH RETREAT We recently learned of a Youth Retreat opportunity for our High School kids on the weekend of February 3rd & 4th in Ellensburg at St. Andrew Parish. Call the Parish Office if you would like to send a student or if you would like to volunteer to chaperone. This will be a great chance to get to know Catholic peers and unplug for a few days. No phones or tablets allowed! The cost of the retreat is $35 and the deadline to register is

quickly approaching.

PROFETAS VERDADEROS Hoy en Deuteronomio oí mos que las palabras de Dios llenara n la boca de un profeta verdadero, pero un profeta falso pondra , por así decirlo, palabras meramente humanas en boca de Dios. En el Evange-lio segu n san Marcos, vemos a Jesu s ensen ando y curando como un profeta verdadero con la autoridad de la voz de Dios. La historia de nuestra Iglesia esta llena de ambos tipos de profetas. Algunos pro-

fetas falsos fueron extremadamente populares y eran muy versa-dos en la Sagrada Escritura, incluso ocupaban puestos de autori-dad eclesial. Pero en el Evangelio de hoy descubrimos que la fa-ma de Jesu s se extendio porque ensen aba con autoridad; no era una autoridad porque fuera popular o famoso. En otra parte, des-cubrimos con e l, cuando es tentado y enfrenta a Satana s en el desierto, que cualquiera puede citar la Sagrada Escritura, incluso si estos van en contra de los propo sitos de Dios. Hoy oí mos que su autoridad no era como la de los escribas, que eran la autori-dad oficial religiosa en su e poca. Nuestra tarea es hacer todo lo posible por saber identificar a los verdaderos profetas que esta n entre nosotros y tambie n a ser verdaderos profetas. El salmista nos dice co mo hacerlo: no debemos endurecer nuestros corazo-nes cuando escuchamos a Dios. Si realmente escuchamos a Dios, Dios pondra sus palabras en nuestra boca. Copyright © J. S. RETIRO DE JÓVENES DE LA DIÓCESIS DE YAKIMA

Recientemente, nos enteramos de un retiro para nuestros jo venes de la escuela secundaria el fin de semana del 3 y 4 de febrero en Ellensburg, en la Parroquia St. Andrew. Llame a la Oficina Parroquial si desea enviar un estudiante o si desea ser voluntario para ser acompan ante.
